Laydown Reviewed in Rolling Stone's Top Singles Section

Here is what they had to say.

3 Stars

"Having declared the Internet "over," Prince is releasing his new disc by giving it away in copies of European newspapers and magazines, such as Rolling Stone's German edition and Belgium's enticingly named Het Nieuwsblad. Sadly, 20Ten is all blad and no nieuws, wanly recapitulating Purple Rain's funk-rock sound while replacing its great theme (fucking) with windy lyrics about universal wisdom. Fitting the offbeat marketing plan, the best song is a hidden track, "Laydown," a hypnotic grind with big, scratchy riffs and a sing-rap cadence weirdly reminiscent of Missy Elliott's "Get Ur Freak On." It's Prince at his most playful, inviting us to his righteous planet with abstruse poetry: "From the heart of Minnesota/Here come the Purple Yoda." (Shouldn't that be "The Purple Yoda, from the heart of Minnesota here come"?) It's a welcome break from all the heavy thinking, and it's full of something too many recent Prince songs have lacked: fun." - Jon Dolan

He compared it to "Get your freak on"..when it's a copy of Santogold's "Creator"...
This guy is clearly out of his element and his review is therefore rubbish to me...

Get your freak on?! The fuck is this guy talking about, that's got about as much comparison as 'When Doves Cry' does to 'Yakkety Sax', the Benny Hill theme...

What it is?!?!

Ok, Smooth Criminal, let's just end it there. Just to try to relate to this...I think we should all give the Cd time to grow on this. As a huge MJ fan myself, I remember arguing with countless people that Invincible was full of good music, only to hear people calling it a 1 or 2 star album. Nobody wanted to hear that "Speechless," or "Threatened" were great songs. I was just stupid. 20Ten is no masterpiece, but is full of good songs. It took me 4 full listens to love it. On previous posts, I gave it little love. Of course, this is all opinon, unless Tony M is the subject. 19 out of 12 people who heard Tony M have said he sucked. It was a scientific survey as well.

He gave the song 3 stars, not the album.

The album isn't MPLSound, Lotusflow3r, 3121 or Musicology.

But it is a lot better than Planet Earth.

I don't want you to think like me. I just want you to think.

'Sticky like Glue' is not fun?!

Dude hasn't been listening to the album if he think it's not light-hearted enough, I don't know how anyone could classify 'Everybody Loves Me' as anything else.

Another lazy journo... yawn zzz

Laydown is not the best track on that album, maybe the most commercial? To completely ignore Sticky Like Glue is criminal. No wonder Prince isn't interested in the 'music biz', when it's more about biz then music. Lame.
