On first listen I immediately disliked it, but because of all the love it was getting here and on Facebook I listened 2 it repeatedly, put it down, and tried again trying 2 see what people see in this song and why it's being hailed as a classic. And I just can't see it. I just don't like this song at all. I thought it would grow on me like "Call My Name" did, or even "Act Of God" which I was unsure of at first but is one of my favs from the album. But FSS? IMO, a stinker...cool guitar solo though.

Call my name - is a shoe-horn rhyme fest with appalling, APPAULING lyrics and off key singing.

Excuse me, but where is exactly in this song is Prince singing off-key?

I've seen so much love on here for this song and I just don't understand it. Of all the boring slow songs he's put out in the last decade, this to me is by far the snooziest.

Don't get me wrong - it's not god awful....but it's just uninteresting to the extreme.

I'm perplexed as to why people are calling this one a classic. Does anyone else agree with me? Or have I finally lost my admittedly tentative grasp on Prince fandom?

love the guitar solo and the screams, but the song is kind of tame now to me. I still love Walk In Sand tho'..thats my ish.

I guess U will feel the same way next year when he accepts another Grammy to put on his shelve @ Paisley Park for best R&B ballad 4 the Masterpiece "Future Soul Song".....

but Future Baby Mama was the jaym .. nod It deserved it's slow jam win of that year..compared to alot that was out.

Not off key as such but that style he's developed recently of 'cracking' his vice so it wobbles like a teenager just hitting puberty...none if his falsettos now are crisp....tracks like Sea of Everything is an excellent example

I was wondering what to call that...i never liked when he started singing like that in the 90's especially.

I do find FSS a tad bit boring. neutral

I don't hate it, I just don't love it. It hasn't grown on me since first listening to it. I don't care for the lyrics, but the guitar in the last minute of the song is great.

Yeah I started around NPS didn't it...very odd. His whole style suddenly changed to one tha seemed more effort lacking...talking raps, less strenuous falsetto, lyrics that put effort into finding a rhyme more than saying anything.
Just an opinion of course but it is so odd how many things changed about him around thus time.

Anyway. Love this song now...it took a while but it's a rarity that his song paint a meaningful picture in recent years

The verses are kinda sucky and have a really predictible quality to them, reminds me of mid/late 90s R&B and even Emancipation era. I like the chorus though.

This is about as close a description as I can come to this song as well, except I would call the choruses kind of pleasant, but not necessarily likeable.

I really don't understand all the love this song is getting, but that's what makes the world go round. It's not the worst song in the rolodex, it's just not something I would ever listen to unless I was playing the whole album and didn't feel like reaching for the remote control to skip it.

I think it's getting love in the same way that a floating log gets love after your ship sinks...any bit of hope is clung onto with dear life.

No, I`d say its one of my favorites from the album. I would imagine its getting love from people b/c they actually like it. I don`t think anyone pretends to like music they don`t care for.

I was joking really. It has something that only a few Prince songs have had in recent years...I want to say 'colour' but that doesn't explain it...perhaps Character is a better word

Yeah, I find it to be boring, too. I didn't even like the live premiere at the Brussels aftershow, which is unusual for me when it comes to performances of new material.

On the other hand, "Sea Of Everything" is emerging as my favorite song on the album. It's the only track I like more with each listen, and I think the vocals and melody are gorgeous, yet it seems a lot of people think that's the boring ballad. shrug

I havent talked to him about it or anything but it sounds like its about a point you evolve to. You dont start there you end up there. Thats why its called Future. Whats interesting about it is the cat who layers things so complex is coming so directly at you that you in this case dont know any better than to be bored. Listen again it might be more intricate than you think. Love sure is

It's amazing how we all like Prince but tastes differ in the material...I can't stand Dea of Everything BECAUSE of the vocal...it's everything I dislike about his recent out put which uses that whiny/off key/wobbly (whatever you call it...not pure) falsetto style. It reminds me of a teen who's voice is breaking or a bad karaoke singer who can't quite get the nores

lol That actually just adds charm to the song for me. I don't care for studio recordings that sound too perfect, and have the soul polished out of them. I usually prefer live versions, because I want to hear flaws and all. It just makes it more real to me.

in the beginning of it remind of how "the beautiful ones" opens

Future Soul Song is incredibly beautiful to me ! The lyrics remind me of 'One Song"....also a beautiful song.

I find the meaning of these 2 songs very spiritual and for some people spirituality in any form is just not their cup of tea. For me the meaning of Future Soul Song and One Song touches my soul in a way that most songs can't, and I totally get what Prince is trying to say. I would love to live in a world that Prince captures in those 2 songs!

We were all meant to to live in paradise in harmony with love, honor and respect for the creator.

Some people get it and for some people it just doesn't fit into the way they view the world. Our world today reflects how far we have distanced us from God. And when everything fails we blame God for our misery or try to convince ourselves that God simply doesn't exist.

Songs like Future Sould Song are very uplifting to me because Prince has still a vision of how the world is supposed to be and he knows that one day he will live in that world.

love the one who is Love!

Can't believe any Prince fan would find it boring. To me it could be in my top 20 favorite songs by him. Goes toe to toe with his 80s greats.

Statements like that always amuse me.

Prince has fans all over the world, of different ages, from different backgrounds. We don't all like the same things. Some of us like the "funk" Prince , some of us like the "rock" Prince, some of us only like the ballads. It's hard to say what a "Prince fan" would like.

incomplete thought edit

Amen to this! Finally somebody gets reality smile. This statement is so realistically true

To me the problem is that the verse works much better than the chorus, in terms of the music. The verse is above average and his dark voice works well with the melody. The chorus is below average and the sound of the chorus doesn't fit very well with the verse.

If you're going to sing about a dream where every living soul sang the most beautiful melody ever sung, then the chorus should be much better than this and fit better.

@Kara. I agree with you about Sea Of Everything. At first I thought it was just ok and nothing special but it really does have a beautiful sentiment. It's grown on me immensely.

F.S.S. *almost* holds it together but it kinda strays off too much for my taste...a little too wordy, too. "Dogmatic persecution" makes me CRINGE!

For me it doesn't start strong, and I do remember upon first reviewing the CD skipping it a few times. There was an istance where I was busy I guess doing something else and ended up letting the song play... from the guitar solo in the middle to the end it certainly gets better and the ending with the deep vocals and fade out guitar is like whoa. Me likey... so as a whole song it gets a 7 out of 10 for me. The beginning is meh but I'd listen to the entire song just to get to the end.. if that makes any sense...

I don't like any of the ballads on the album, honestly. But it's not that they're boring, but that I just don't care for that kind of song unless it has some 'umph' to it. Adore from SOTT had snippets of humor like "...well...maybe not the ride...." lol, and "The Beautiful Ones" ended up in a screamer that would have scared Teddy Pendagrass.

These are paint-by-numbers Prince ballads, which means they're good, but just not interesting to me. Walk in Sand to be the most skip-worthy one. I just can't endure that song. Actually the last 3 songs of 20Ten (if you don't count that embarassing Laydown track) don't do it for me.

It's good background music when cleaning though.
