Prince's dancing ability

watching an old clip of prince doing Wanna be your lover, it was apparent to me, he didn't know how to dance. He'd foot stomp in his go go boots kinda spastically, not necessarily to the beat of the music....

but given time, Prince is a great dancer. I know, i know James brown, etc...but I would think that sometime between wbyl, and 1999 prince got moves. I also know he was micromanaging everything he was involved with including stage moves for vanity, perhaps even the Time.

Where did Prince learn his moves?

anyone? anyone? Bueller?..Ferris Bueller?

Though later than 1999, i remember about this :

"...Purple Rain (CD2.09), Baby I’m a Star – outtake (CD2.05), I would Die 4 U – outtake (CD2.04), Electric Intercourse (CD1.03) and Let’s Go Crazy 12” (CD1.01) were all recorded, pre-edits and overdubs, at First Avenue nightclub in Minneapolis Minnesota on August 3rd 1983. The show cost 10 dollars and was a benefit for ballet choreographer Loyce Houlton’s Minnesota Dance Theatre. MDT was where the Prince crew had been receiving dance lessons in preparation for the upcoming filming of the Purple Rain film. This show is also significant as it was Wendy Melvoin’s (age 19) first show, making the first official Prince and the Revolution show. Two songs here, Electric Intercourse and Purple Rain are taken from an in-house video taping of this show, which still remains the best available source..."

If there was Purple Rain ... version..

I think he was moving well on "Party Up" on Saturday Night Live.

He definitely upped his game (dancing wise) between the release of 1999 and Purple Rain.

This is purely conjecture but I wonder if Michael's Jackson's Billie Jean performance at the Motown

25th Anniversary Concert (23rd March 1983) had anything to do with this?

The choreography is amazing in the live version of daddy pop that he performed at arsenio hall. Google it.

he took dancing lessons for purple rain. it's pretty obvious if you watch the live shows from before purple rain and then afterwards. even the 3rd august 83 show compared to purple rain tour shows you can see he's still not that great. come the parade and SOTT tours he was going crazy onstage, and then again with the gameboyz

and what's more impressive is that he never sounds out of breath when singing after dancing, no matter how energetic the moves
