It was written on a dare (I think it was posed by Sheena Easton). In discussing his ablitity to write songs, she dared him that he couldn't write a song using that title. What you hear is the result (dogs and cats in heat). I think Sheena even has a co-writing credit on the song. Definitely one of his many great 80s b-sides, I might add.

I believe the song is about temptation. I'm not talking about any ol' kind of temptation, people, I'm talkin' about, I'm talkin' about... sexual temptation. Prince (the dog) wants to nail some chick (the cat) and for whatever reason the girl is unobtainable. In the song Prince is using a metaphor about a dog wanting to have sex with a cat and being frustrated that it is not going to happen to explain his relationship with the girl the song is about. Or maybe the song features some deeper sociopolitical subtexts that I am missing? Maybe Prince feels bad for dogs and cats that there is still a stigma attached to them having sex with each other?

Another orger here once said the line "is it really worth one night of fun? You've got nine lives.. I've only got one" could be interpreted as "is it really worth sleeping with you, you can cum multiple times whereas I can only cum once".

I thought that made sense.

A joke. Done for a dare. But fun and funky.

In a similar vein to 'Everybody Loves Me', IMO.

I have assumed for the last 13 years that is was about 2 things:

1) interracial relationships

2) the risk of sex, specifically AIDS.

You're looking wayyyyyyyyy too deep into what's essentially a joke song.

too deep? I though that from my first listen in 87.

A dog and a cat getting it on = interracial relationship

"Is it really worth one night of fun..." = getting AIDS

granted my head was swimming in the glory that is 'Sign O the Times' which I knew right away was about--in part--AIDS. So there was not looking deep into it at all. Just my first impression.

(I forget I have to use the spell check each time)

Used to not like the horns.

But not anymore. Whew. What a song. The verses are fonky!!! All the effects and voices in this song just add icing to a funky cake. Another incredible b-side.

(and I agree with the Interracial / AIDS theories to an extent)

An german shepherd & alaskan husky might be Interracial lol

same here.

The raw emotion just slams you in the head.

I'm not sold on the interracial/aids theories though.

"Is it really worth one night of fun" could be the dog's (Prince) way of expressing his insecurity because he is going to be passed out while the cat has 8 lives left and is disappointed in his performance.

You're so glam, every time I see you I wanna slam!

I always took the "you've got nine lives" line as an AIDS reference as well. Coulda been anything though. As for the song...

Hey little pussy, u sho look sweet

knockin me off of my 4 feet

I sho do wish dogs could climb

then we could have a funky good time

SLAMMIN!
