Hey not "killing whales"..

Hey guys..

I was reading the interview that prince gave the german rolling stone today..

and there was a line where prince said something bout "the arms of orion",

translated, it would be this:

«I didn't make it, the joker wrote that one.. (laughs) ..did you know that the

batman album was planned to be a duet between michael jackson and me?

him as batman, me as the joker?»

not laughing after that so.. was he serious? i've heard a lot bout MJ's "bad"

album and that it was planned to be done with prince.. but i hear that batman

story for the first time.. is he joking or did i miss sumthin? what u guys know

bout it?

can u post the whole interview please

Some Quotes: "Alien expectations are not relevant to me. My world is working to other criterions."

"Young Artists don´t need any gatekeeper. Hendrix even got London before his first recording."

Prince is improvising on his piano: "you know, this is holy to me!" He shouts. "Music shall release the spirit, take us to the next step (Level). Trying to get higher and staying there! (<Original in english) And if it loses this drive, if it gets shallow and predictable.." he is gesticulating - with his left hand- a curve going down",...then I´LL lose the interest immediately. Without music the world would be such a static, stationary place!"

"YOu have to invent your harmonies by yourself! Wendy and Lisa taught me that." (I tried as good as I could to translate the quotes from german to english.)

I have never heard this before. But one could assume that they chose just Prince-seeing how it is a Warner Brothers movie. You know promote in house talent (Prince) and not Michael Jackson.

That makes sense. However, I don't think the WB movie studio that wanted MJ for Batman were the same folks as the WB music company. I should have specified that the WB film people/producers supposedly requested Michael at first since he was so huge and could have helped popularize initial promotion, and increase overall sales of the movie (even though it was a major success without him, as well as both of its soundtracks). So I don't think MJ not being under the WB music label mattered. shrug

Regarding Prince, I've also read that the WB record label agreed with Burton in the end to have him do the entire album alone not only to assist the movie but also because they wanted to start trying to control Prince's output. They figured that letting him do the Batman album solo was a way to allow him to put out new music without releasing a separate "Prince" record in '89, satisfying both him and the record company that year.

Interesting. That sounds about right.

I think, currently it is only available in the german issue of the rolling stone. I didn´t find the interview online on the web. This is the official homepage of the german issue of the rollingstone: www.rollingstone.de Perhaps they´ll publish it later on their homepage (August), but I don´t know.

Honestly MJ would have probably done a better job than Prince.

Don't get me wrong--I don't really like MJ's material and I'm no MJ fan by any stretch of the imagination.

But Michael really gets into roleplay (and not just in the bedroom with prepubescent boys), and he would have probably produced a spectacular album with some really catchy tunes.

Prince, on the other hand, gave us something horrendously lackluster. It was an awkward, lopsided album, with some of his weakest material ever. The extended version of Partyman was pretty good, but never made it on the album.

Batman just sounded a bit like a Graffiti Bridge warmup to me.

Really?? I think Prince was a better match, even though the soundtrack had only a brief contribution to the actual film. Considering Batman is a dark character who is torn between what is right and wrong. Prince's paradox in his music are a clear parallel, singing about the debauch and God in the same song.

MJ might have been better suited to Superman, who is almost certainly a better match for him.

Batman wasn't dark nor moody. It was just so-so and pretty darned weak.

Arms of Orion? REALLY? REAAAAAAALLLY?

"Hey Duckie...Lemme stick this 7 inch in that computer....hahahahahahaha" and "Ooyeah...ooyeah, I wanna bust that body....". are just unforgivably bad lines.

I remember some music critique saying the Batdance video is Prince's version of the sleazy Batman movie he would have made if left up to him. lol

I think it was Rolling Stone (USA) as a matter of fact which did a review of the album and said,
It's not that Batman is a bad album. It's just that with Prince, you just expect so much more."

I don't even remember the last time I attempted to listen to this album. I only really like one song "The Future" and even then, only barely.

.

Honestly, the vehicle with its themes would have been a great platform for the two of them together. The characters could be used as buffer to the immense often cartoonish persona's of both jackson and prince. Party Mans impact would have been greater as an answer record to a Jackson/Batman tune which could have been a long playing video/mini movie ala Thriller. Fans would have loved it for its sheer genuis and it would have capitalized on the rivalry tha WE (not them) wanted to believe in.

I have always loved the Batman LP. I know I am in the minority, however I think there is only one weak tune with Arms Of Orion...and it is still pretty good.
