Am I the only one who started out think that 20TEN was sh*te and has ended up thinking its a work of genius? Anyone else had a mojor about face on this album? I hated it on the first listen but now think its by far the best and most consitent release in years....harking back to the glory days!

yes its just you. this album is pure garbage. 1999, purple rain, gold, sign o the times, symbol album, around the world in a day, those are works of genius. This album is is worst ever. Give it a month. Your opinion will change. ITs just still new to you. [Edited 7/19/10 7:59am]

I hated it when I heard it first it as well. I thought the production was plastic and lifeless and the songs just not up to scratch. Songs like 'Everybody loves me' sounded like a bad joke until it dawned on me that the cheese is intentional and sort of taking the piss.
I think 'Sticky like glue' would have the same vibe as 'The balled of Dorothy Parker' if it was re-produced on a shitty 80's lo-res CD with a real old fashioned reverb drenched over everything.
Because its not recorded that way and was recorded using really up to date technmology that throw away demo sound of 'Sign o the times' hasn't translated. Knock off some of the bass, stick a crap reverb on the whole album and it starts to sound like it was a lost gem from the mid to late 80's.
That in itself could be a criticism as its represents standing still creatively I guess but its better than the barrel load of toss we've had (bar the odd stand out track) from the last plethora of releases.
Future soul song is gorgeous and not because of production but because the harmonies in the chorous take you to a melody you would never expect and it builds to a massive crescendo. It reminds me of 'Black hole of the sun' for some reason. [Edited 7/19/10 8:20am]

i agree about the production....it is a little too polished.....i would prefer some rough edges here and there...but i can live with it and get past that and just enjoy the music....it does run very well and as i said before ....its a solid smooth funky album.....nothing great but some of it is damn good.... i am pleased with it......way better than musicology or most of his recent releases ...

Wow - from crap to genius in a week. Be sure to let us know what you think in a month! We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

I hated it like Planet Earth the first time I heard it. Now I'm really enjoying it. Nice job Prince. CALL ME A DREAMER 2!

20Ten sucks royally. But it would make a great throw and catch recreational disc. Thanks, Prince.

Well you're not exactly alone in thinking that but I'm not one of those.
It's OK as far as current releases from Prince go though.

Everytime I read one of these 20ten is (great, good, classic, solid etc...) threads, I go back and listen again in hopes of hearing something I missed the first time. Usually, I'm still disappointed. Having said that, I'm leaving work in 15 minutes, and I'm going to try again on the ride home anyway.

i agree that it is genius... simply amazing... Future Soul Song was amazing from the very first listen. I have kids, 14, 13, 12, and 10 years old and they all love Future Soul Song from the first listed. Now I can't keep my ipod to myself
back to the topic... I am a 46 year old, black, man, gospel musician who has liked Price since For U,
I know that Prince is held to a much higher standard than other musicians and that is why, (i think), people will say that this album is crap. I don't get that at all. This album is amazing.
It is like Prince is so far ahead of the game that he came around full circle and caught back up with himself. This album is amazing... yes genius. But I knew that it would be going in and I am more amazed as I listen.
My thing is this... Prince is a musical genius... thus... when new music comes out... my expectation is that it will be genius. Now, some songs I like more than other but generally I like all but one or 2 on an album. When I don't like one, I don't usually think it is crap because as a musician I have an appreciation for what he does. Frankly, even his crappy stuff is usually pretty inpressive.
Shoot, I am rambling.... I will stop.

I will say that when I initially heard I told my buddy that this may be Prince's weakest album yet. I just did not get it. the songs were not the best, the production was so so, and he didn't take the songs anywhere. I kept reading (not only on this board, but others) how good this record was and felt a bit confused cuz it seemed like I missed out on something. Then the other night as I was leaving the studio I put it in just to give it one more spin, then it clicked. I don't think there is a bad song on here. I honestly think it's his best record in quite some time. Future Soul Song reminds me so much of Free for some reason. I think this album is a cross between Controversy, Grafitti Bridge, and 3121 (weird huh?)
I love it when records grow on me. I must say I was close to closing the Prince chapter, this shows me he ain't just in Prince world 24/7

Dude, it will click.. I'm telling you, I was the same way.

I can't switch this off. It is streets ahead of anything he has done in at least 10 years in my opinion. Act of God has been the biggest grower for me, thought it was just a filler but about 100 plays later i'm really appreciating it

I think the great thing is it for most it doesn't hit you right away. Give it a few listens and then it creeps up on you. Most of my favorite stuff by him was that experience. Purple Rain, Sign 'O' The Times, and Lovesexy are perfect examples for me. I think if this stuff was promoted and there were videos and airplay more people would defitnitly hear this cd differently . This is one cd I truly pray he puts his all into as far as promotion. It would make up for the lack of support for TGE. Although I'm not blind at the fact that its the younger generation who decides what hot.

Symbol album? Yeah, that Tony M spreads the genius around... "New Power slide...."

Be Serious. Prince has probably stopped promoting 20Ten as we speak.
Well, I like 20Ten a lot more than I did a few days ago. It's never going to be my favorite, but it could creep up to top 15...you never know. Funny my reply was to Fantastic Joy's comment, guess I screwed up something, or I am getting dumber in my old age, as that other comment creeped in.

With 20Ten Prince has reached new levels of mediocrity. The songs are icky sweet, dull and just plain terrible.

I've been a Prince fan since 1978 and have purchased every Prince album the day they have come out. 20Ten is the first album since 1987 that I have loved ALL the way through, skipping not one track. So many people on here get pissed when Prince puts out an album that's not what they WANTED it to be. There's not one song on this album that I don't enjoy completely. I hear a lot of people talking shit about Everybody Loves Me. When did everyone lose their sense of humor??? When was it written that Prince could no longer have FUN??? Had that song been a b-side on a single from Dirty Mind or Controversy people would have liked it. People are so quick to judge the new music they don't even give it a chance. So what it really boils down to is that they are ruining the purple ride for themselves and try like HELL to ruin it for others. Prince may be the purple Yoda, but Wendy & Lisa and Eric Leeds also sit on the Jedi Council.

I didn't hate it at first, but I didn't think it was genius either. Now, I do.
With each subsequent play I loved the album more and more. Incredible record, just goes to show, all those people who thought Prince didn't have it in him to make another classic were DEAD WRONG! |

I honestly LOVED this album from the start... The only thing I didn't like at first was Everybody Loves Me, that is until I found out it was an intentional joke (its actually growing on my now lol). Purple Music is my drug and I'm jonesin!!!!!

I like the flow of the album, but I am less excited about it the more I listen. I am not really into any of the tracks, though Sticky Like Glue is one standout.
Beginning Endlessly was great at first, but now it seems like it's missing something.
Compassion is growing on me, I like the energy a lot, and it gets better at the end like all great Prince songs.
I liked Future Soul Song better before I heard the lyrics clearly, but it it better than Te Amo.
All in all it has a nice energetic feel, fun, and musical, but the tracks don't hold up the more I listen. They are not bad, just not great. But that is just my current opinon, I am still listening. My Legacy
