The Diamonds & Pearls tour 1992.

This was the first time i managed to attend a Prince concert. I was lucky to attend 3 gigs on this tour.

Did you attend any of the shows? What are your memories of those gigs?

[img:$uid]http://i757.photobucket.com/albums/xx218/MMikeyBee/Prince%20and%20related/Diamonds-and-Pearls-Tour-92--on-sta.jpg[/img:$uid]

The Diamonds & Pearls tour kicked off in Tokyo Japan on 3rd April 1992. The tour reached Japan, Europe, and also featured Prince's first ever gigs in Australia. 52 main concerts were played, and numerous aftershow gigs were also performed.

The tour was seen by over 850,000 people. 200,000 in Australia alone.

The tour band was the largest group that Prince had ever toured with. The lineup was Levi Seacer Jr, Sonny Thompson, Tommy Barbarella, Rosie Gaines, Michael Bland, Michael B Nelson, Brian Gallagher, Kathy Jensen, Dave Jensen, and Steve Strand. The lineup also included, Mayte, Diamond & Pearl, Tony Mosley, Damon Dickson, Kirk Johnson and Dj William Graves.

Nah, Philly didn't get to smell none of this tour either & this around his infamous "I hate Philly" comment on the Nude Tour Rehearsals dvd. We were on punishment from 89'-96'!

It is said that Prince decided not to take the Diamonds & Pearls tour to the USA because he was still reluctant to mount a full scale American tour after losing money on the Lovesexy tour.

Unfortunately Prince did not tour the states with this tour. I did see an abbreviated version of the show at Glam Slam Minneapolis in Jan 1992, and a couple weeks later a full dress rehearsal for the tour at Paisley Park for invited guests. I can't remember what was going on in Minneapolis, some huge sporting event, but there were many sports figures and celebrities in attendance. You can see some footage of the show in the Nothing Compares 2 U video. I loved the look, the new music, and the energy.

The 1st Arsenio Hall performance sent this whole era into overdrive! I got the shit beat out of me for a whole hour that night.

The Paisley Park show (27th January am) was after a Super Bowl pre-game at the Metrodome in Minneapolis. So this would explain you seeing sports figures and celebrities there.

Donald Trump was at that gig.

lol I did a little digging on the dead internet and found that out too. As you can tell, I'm not a big sports fan! It was my second time being in Paisley Park, the first being the afterparty for the show he did at Glam Slam a couple of weeks prior, when the infamous TTD incident took place. Needless to say, I was in Heaven!!!

You are very lucky, i suppose those 2 gigs you attended more than made up for not being able to see the actual tour.

The tour shows were amazing, but the venue in London where i went was huge (Earls Court 18,000 seater). Being able to see him in a much smaller venue would have been special.

I have been very fortunate in that respect, living in Minneapolis. I had only lived here for 3 months when those shows took place. Here is the set list for the Glam Slam show:

Thunder
Daddy Pop
Diamonds And Pearls
Willing And Able
Jughead
The Sacrifice Of Victor
Nothing Compares 2 U
Thieves In The Temple
Sexy MF
Insatiable
Cream
1999
Baby, I'm A Star
Push
Gett Off
My Name Is Prince

Note the three songs from the symbol cd were premiered merely 3 months after the release of D&P. At the afterparty at Paisley Park the DJ played Sexy MF, My Name Is Prince, and the Continental.

That is interesting, songs from the " prince " album were played over the P.A before the London shows. Screenings of the Sexy M.F video were also shown.

this is the only Prince show i've seen.

a friend of mine called me up at the last minute and said he had tickets.

what i remember the most is Prince's bouncy lightness, the great sound quality, diamond and pearl, and the drummer.

it was a real privelege to see such a professional, colorful and entertaining show. :drummer:

this too shall pass

Did anyone see a show where Carmen Electra was the opening act? Details please. The NPG backed her, correct?

I went to the opening 3 nights of the London shows. There was no support on the first night, but Carmen Electra was the opening act on the second or third night. This was in fact Carmens last performance of the tour.

Her band were replaced by the NPG earlier in the tour as Prince blamed her original band for Carmens bad performance.

The NPG members backing her were Levi, Sonny and Michael B.

Her set was short 20-30 minutes, and i really cannot remember much more about it. She was difficult to hear vocally.

Such a great tour, I saw the show in Hamburg Germany.

This was the first time to hear Sexy Motherfucker played, it wasn't released at that time......

it was amazing. And it was in-door arena, I prefer that, it's always more intimate.

Great concert..... 9 out of 10 imo.

Well, the Purple Rain tourbook also had "World Tour" on its cover, and he never took that show to Europe ( he wanted to, but changed his mind....hence the Syracuse Purple Rain show via satellite, later released on VHS).

It was a world tour...I don't understand what you mean

It took in Europe, Japan and Australia.... Unless if course you mean no USA in which case I'll point out the 'Upcoming WORLD Tour' the first year of NPGMC usedd to hook members.... Never left USA/ Canada soil.

I suppose but I guess it's most marketable...I dint think he's well known in Afruca ( at least to the African families I know) and Russia was prob a no no. I seem to recall him saying USA didn't feel like home and, certainly in the later 90s he said he wouldn't go back until is contract ended....all lies of course like the NPGMC world tour
