I'll agree with Prince on the "Internet/numbers in your head" thing I didn't download 20Ten. A dear friend from the Org purchased a newspaper for me in England and sent me the CD.
And, I didn't listen to it online (except for one snippet of "Lavaux"). I did it the old-fashioned way - I waited for my copy to get here.
When it did, I kept it old-school. I cleared out the house, jammed in the CD, and listened to the whole thing at maximum volume on my stereo. Through the speakers, not through headphones.
And you know what?
IT ROCKED.
If your listening experience with 20Ten consisted of downloading a series of 1's and 0's, and you listened to it on your computer or music player, through plastic headphones, then I can assure you that you didn't get the full force of the music.
I understand what Prince means with his "the Internet is dead/numbers in your head" statement. It was a weird way to say it, but I get it.
Ironically though, the only copy of the "Lotu$flower" set I have IS digital, as supplied by Prince. No way in hell am I going to spend another dollar for a real CD of it, after shelling out $77 for what I have.
But in the future, I'm going to do everything I can to buy only CD's. Heck, I may go back to LPs.

LOL, no problem. I'm way closer to being a grandpa than to being a college student!

I still buy vinyl when it's offered. We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

LMAO, it's not THAT bad. I can still beat my 16-year-old son at...crap! At NOTHING! And he's 3 inches taller than me now!
Thanks for the hug, but I think what I really need is a drink. And not Ensure!

Gotcha. | |

I haven't bought a vinyl record since, I think, 1986. Maybe the "She's Always in My Hair" 12-inch was the last one I bought.
But if I'm going to continue this fad of listening to music way up loud, I might have to go find some vinyl. Do they still have record stores?

I definitely see what you mean. I prefer getting the hard-copies of his albums myself. When I got my copy of 20TEN, like you through an online friend, I put it in the stereo and played it loud. But, the second time around, I ripped the music to my computer to put it on my ipod and listened to it through headphones. I found more satisfaction through it by listening with headphones. Everything in the music went straight into my ears. I knda like the headphones better. maybe because I dont use the stereo that much, lol
But nevertheless, I see what u mean Yes, at 19, I finally saw the Revolution, a legendary band. And I talked to Wendy!!! In addition to seeing Prince, I have now lived life. Thank you Purple People!!

Thanks.
I hadn't really busted an album through the stereo in a LONG time. Like you, it was straight to the iPod.
But when I realized I was going to wait for 20Ten, like in the old days, I decided to revisit my youth and break it in like I used to.
What a pleasant surprise that was!
To my family's chagrin, they are now going to be hearing lots of Prince and Springsteen throughout the house!

I don't know... I'm a math whiz. Personally, I don't think the Bible can be good for your mind. It's all made up lies, so why bother with it? Isn't it better to spend time on things that are real?

The hell does the Bible have to do with anything?

Oh, yeah - they're still around. Madison has a couple good ones. I made a pretty decent Prince haul. a couple months ago, in fact.
As for new albums, I bought Funplex (B-52s) last year, the 180-gm re-issue of Purple Rain, and Metropolis by Janelle Monáe. And Daptone Records (home of Sharon Jones, Nicole Willis, The Budos Band and others) routinely does their releases on vinyl. We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

He's getting in a dig at the OP. We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

I don't understand your point at all. CDs are digital. The CD you own and the download other people have are bit for bit identical. The only difference is where the 1s and 0s are stored.
You certainly have a point about how it's listened to. Cheap $30 headphones aren't going to sound as good as a high end stereo system with quality speakers. That doesn't mean people can't have headphones that sound fantastic. If I put my iphone in a dock that's connected to my stereo system and have an apple lossless version of 20ten, it's going to sound identical to playing the physical CD. And I don't have to worry about any scratches degrading the quality of the sound, which has happened with more than one of my CDs.

Aren't downloaded things compressed? Or does that only happen when it's transferred to an MP3 player or iPod?

I'm reading a book now called "The Case for Christ". It's awesome.

I have that book and I loved it.

Others can explain it better than I, but it's a function of format. Non-compressed formats include .flac, .wav and .aiff. We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

i downloaded it free and listened to it in my beyerdynamic tracking headphones.
it sounds fantastic the music is inside my head.
i can hear the whole sonic landscape environment, where everything is panned, the vocal blends, every instrument.
i prefer listening thru headphones, it gives me a real intimate experience. this too shall pass

I'm glad you have a physical copy and I'm glad you like it. But I still think his statements were hypocritical nonsense. And purposefully so.
