Music videos are dead - the poster not formerly known as Prince.
LOL. See, this is one of the advantages of being old.
Back in the days of the dinosaur, we had no videos. When a song came out, it became attached to you either through what you imagined it to be about, how you imagined yourself in the singer's place, or what you were doing at the time you heard the song.
When MTV hit the scene, songs became associated with the video. Is there anyone that doesn't first think of zombies when they hear "Thriller"? Not that I didn't like the video for that, but I am kind of glad that for most of my favorite songs from my youth, the memory I attach to them is something personal instead of the artist's video interpretation.
All this is very, very true. Especially the bold part.
However, realising all this, knowing that a music video should not affect what you think and feel about a song makes it easier to just sit back and enjoy a video by one of your favourite artists from time to time. I never watch MTV and I actually find music videos to be too blunt and childish for my taste, but Prince's videos have always been quite fun and cool to watch, so I will make an exception and say that I'm really looking forward to this. |
