Lets be clear about one thing on 20Ten

I hear some complaining that Prince needs to do something "new" and should not keep with the same styles etc...I dont get it. Prince has not visited many of these sounds (FSS, Lavaux, SLG in particular) in over 25 YEARS!

I would argue he abandoned his trademark sound way to soon. As much I as love ATWIAD, Parade and SOTT, it would have been nice if in the late 80s/Early 90s instead of trying chasing down musical dead ends in Lovesexy, Batman, and especially the faux-hip hop of Symbol, just once in while there had been a Lavaux or FSS on those albums. I can think of only a few truely "minneapolis" sound songs released after 1984, (in this bed? joy in repetition? Lolita? No More Candy).

please, for now, I'll 20 take new Lavauxs over another faux-love like jazz track.

(Don't feed the trolls)

Anyway...that was the point I was making in the 2000s vs the 90s threads...he has not went back to his formula in years and while the songs were good I guess..he really abandoned funk for a long damn time. And growing up in the 90s too I understand because that was indeed played out..and he wanted to show how versatile he was but leaving his funk for hip hop and rock did not sit well with me at the time. I like and appreciate his rock stuff now and days and generally...a lot of it was ahead of its time....but I do agree with you I'm glad he is recreating his old sound.

Seems like he has been testing with it since Undisputed and Wherever U Go.

I like some of the songs on 20Ten, like Future Soul Song, Walk in the Sand and Laydown but I don´t really care about the rehashed "Let´s Pretend We´re Married" beat in Compassion or those other songs that are reminiscent of his Controversy days.

In fact, I never really like the Controversy album THAT much to begin with, apart from the title track and Private Joy and Annie Christian and Do Me Baby....which is basically half of the album.

I don´t dislike 20Ten, I think it is a highly enjoyable, short little album but I never really cared about most of the early 80s New Wave stuff, never really liked stuff like Jack U Off or Horny Toad or Gotta Stop Messing About, so that´s why I´m not really thrilled with songs like No More Candy 4U on Mplsound or similar stuff on 20Ten. I´d rather hear one cohesive R&B or pure ballads or even rock or blues album by Prince instead of the usual Prince formula or, in this case, an attempt to recreate the 1999 or Controversy sound.

However, all in all, I´m really enjoying 20Ten so far. The ballads are wonderful, some of the best in a long time. I never liked songs like On The Couch or Satisfied but the ballads on 20Ten are really nice.

I've truly tried to listen to 20ten and get a feel for it. All I feel is failure and sadness.

I lack the ability to see past the non existent groove, soul, romance, funk, purple passion and sexiness.

what happen...

I just don't freakin' hear what others are oozing about....

Say it's just a dream...
U open up ur eyes and come 2 realize
u simply imagined this
So u lean over and give her a kiss
Here on earth, here on earth,
with u it's not so bad
Here on earth, here on earth
eye don't feel so sad
Stay right here

Well Prince's fanbase is as diverse as his music. We all love one particular kind of sound over another, so thats makes it even more amazing. IMO smile I FUCKING LOVE THIS ALBUM EVERY SONG! I Can not stop listening to it. I'm very appreciative of it. The CD is sticky like glue to me.

20Ten does revisit the past; however, the past it revisits is the 3121-to-MPLSound past. lol

It sounds like an update of MPLSound more than anything else.

I was surprised when I heard synth and percussion parts from his earlier albums (Dirty Mind, 1999, etc.) underneath several of the songs on 20Ten---Prince, I don't think, was doing this out of laziness, but probably to make some sort of cheeky statement.

But the odd thing for me is not that he repeats himself from his hayday (I don't think 20Ten sounds like ANY of the old albums at all), but that he repeats himself from an album he released just last year---this is a first for Prince, really.

You could easily make a double CD of your own choice combining songs from 20Ten, MPLSound, Planet Earth, and 3121. This would have been difficult or impossible to do with Purple Rain, ATWIAD, Parade, SOTT, and LoveSexy---those albums were just way too different from each other.

I don't really understand the hate for his post-Musicology albums though. They're all pretty good. THey're not great or 'classics', but they're good. After the sucktacular late 90s, 'good' is good enough for me. lol

eh, I dunno. you can easily add roughly half the songs from ATWIAD (and probably half of 1999) to the Purple Rain material with no real problem. and there's no massive difference between the sound of SOTT and the Black Album. shrug

What makes going back to that sound different today is that he is not cursing every other word. His messages are so much different now, and I think that is a great thing. People can dislike the music, but to say that Prince should do this or do that is like telling a painter how to paint. It is their piece of work, and you either dig it or you don't. Some hate it, some love it. I personally love it, but I am not telling others that if they don't like it they should leave. I only wonder why they do stay here. That is harder to understand than anything. It seems many like to mess around with other people's ideas or thoughts. It is not up to any of us to tell another "orger" that their thoughts or opinions are wrong. Live and let live... and just ignore the folks that sh*t on your opinions. I learned my lesson of feeding that stuff. Love, Light and Keep on Dancin'.

Lavaux makes me want to puke. The music is tight, but the lyrics are garbage. Prince is so anti-American now, right? But remember when he cancelled all his overseas shows after 9/11? confuse It's a new album, we're all discussing it, it's an active topic. Why keep saying you like it? Why keep saying anything? It's a discussion forum.

I do have to giggle, if one goes against the grain on here, it's like a cardinal sin. I see people slagging off Planet Earth all the time, I happen to like a pretty good chunk of that album, and I say as much - but I'm not asking anyone to stop saying they dislike it, or other recent album I like.

It also makes me laugh how some of people who are wielding the pitchforks are the same people who were frantically orgnoting me a fortnight ago begging for a link to download the album! lol

The lyrics of Lavaux are garbage? How so? Haven't you ever felt the need to escape and go someplace else? Prince is well traveled... maybe he found Lavaux to be a great place... to call someone "anti-american" because they might want to live someplace else is beyond absurd.

Tell me... don't you ever walk around your town, see a bunch of knucklehead fools, and think to yourself that America is crap and full of the dumbest people anywhere? I do. Do you really think America is that great when politics is so corrupt? Or do you just close your ears and say "America is the best!" Come on man... you can't be this narrow minded and so vanilla. Maybe you are... it wouldn't surprise me that you have absolute zero depth to your being.

The song you describe is not the song Prince wrote. You are substituting your own ideas for what's actually in the song. Listen to the lyrics again. He seems to be talking to overseas audiences, he puts down his own country and to be honest with you, it's embarrasing. "Another form of slavery"? Give me a break. Dude is bytching about paying taxes on his 'million dollar fee' in the next song. Not a good look, imho.

I'd have to say this album has truly interesting and great tracks for me (like all his albums have about 3-4 tracks I think are great):

1."Compassion" title track which is like a purple version of a 60's/early 70's hippy musical communal sing along. This is so much better then the horrible song "Resolution" on "Planet Earth".

2. "Beginning Endlessly" every Prince album has a track that or two that should be on a best of, and this is one of two on this album. this song is GREAT. Epic, rock'n roll attitude, scifi.

3. "Future Soul Song" this song just has so much thick feeling put into it's construction and melody, that it rises above it's more common place style which would have been boring to me if the song had been produced in a more thin way.

4. "Sticky Like Glue" A GREAT throwback to late 70's funky pop that transforms into form a kind of lovely summer funk ditty to an almost ugly theme of disfunctional angry situation. Genius, and just so much fun to listen to.

5. "Everybody Loves Me" A great "what the fuck?" song by Prince in which he throws away all conventional taste and throws out a tongue in cheek (almost self deprecating on a higher level) narrasistic Brady Bunch/Partridge Family type chant. I picture a kitchen done in advocado and brown, but the kids dropped acid and are playing in the backyard, but it's suburbia, not the city. No one else in mainstream pop could even have the imagination or balls to release a track like this. As far as I know. But maybe I don't know much. okay and then the song I am dying to know... why? why?

6. "Laydown" This song is catchy and could probably kill it live, but is also a totally conservative rip off of the styles of someone like lil Wayne and that sort. It's like Prince is trying to funnel the vibe of a younger cliche style to his older audience (as if they wouldn't recognize it). It's almost like Prince was dared to make a song in that style and he just threw one out. I do like the placements of his "get up"'s. Overall this album continues a trend of 60's 70's retro funky and hippy folky/rocky vibe that Prince has been pushing lately with certain tracks on "Planet Earth" and "Lotusflow3r" If those particular tracks were put together onto one album, what a killer concept that would have been!

Prince songs in general, are Anti-American lately. 2010 is no different and that attitude definitely keeps this album from having a lot of meaning to me. Strip away the stuff about the government and taxes and religion and what do you have? Carefully replayed demo tracks that he didn't think were good enough in the 80's, now injected with random quotes from "Watchtower" and bytching about his grown-azz-man resposibilities like, at 52 years old, he just found out about them.
