This is 10 of them, you better believe there's more crimes and misdemeanours against music in the back catalogue. And once we get into the top 20, we'd probably be approaching stuff like 'Black Sweat' where 'vomit-inducing' turns more into good ol' fashioned 'coma-inducingly dull'.

I compiled this a few years ago.....

Underneath The Cream - The Worst of Prince:

I'm Yours (from For You - 1978)

Let's cut him some slack - it was his first album, and the song is not entirely dire.

But it has to be said, on a predominantly soul based debut, this hard-rocker sticks out

like a sore thumb. Ultimately, one of the most forgettable Prince album closers of all time.

Has he EVER performed it live?

Graffiti Bridge (from Graffiti Bridge - 1990)

For me, Prince didn't put a foot wrong in the '80's. Yes you could argue Ronnie Talk To Russia

and Jack U Off were not exactly on the same level as Sign O' The Times or The Beautiful Ones.

But at least they came with a tongue-in-cheek-"I'm doing this shit because I can" sort of attitude.

By 1990 however, things were looking a little ropey.Surely there's no excusing the overtly syrupy

sentiments of this Christmas-sounding musical turkey.

Jughead (from Diamonds And Pearls - 1991)

Roll on a year and Prince is pondering, "is it possible to release a fantastically successful album

that contains my worst album track thus far?".
Indeed it was. Although, all hardcore Prince fans secretly adore it.

3 Chains O' Gold (from O+> - 1992)

I reckon some fans would disagree with this being one of his worst songs. And to some extent,

I can see why. In many ways, there's more going on in this than on the last three Prince albums.

But that's exactly the problem: overblown, overwrought, overambitious - over the top - and then

some..

I Rock Therefore I Am (from Chaos And Disorder - 1996)

Considering how much energy is exerted during these six minutes, not a lot seems to be

accomplished, and it remains one of my least favourite Prince songs. Before release, Chaos And

Disorder was being billed as a return to the stripped down sound of Dirty Mind. I got really excited.

Then I heard this. "NPG to the maximum?" I think not.

We Gets Up (from Emancipation - 1996)

Emancipation was a fairly ambitious project. Sifted down to a single album, it would no doubt have

been Prince's strongest album of the '90's.
Unlike the original Crystal Ball album which thoroughly deserved to be released in its entirety,

some quality control would have helped Prince along here. And my first rejected track would easily

have been We Gets Up. The only redeeming feature is the final 50-second guitar freakout.

In fact, played from that point, it's actually quite a fun little track!

Animal Kingdom (from The Truth - 1998)

Oh dear. If anyone has any doubts about this belonging on this list, allow me to refresh your

memories with some choice lyrics:

"So I don't eat no red meat or white fish

Or funky, funky blue cheese,
We're all members of the animal kingdom
Leave your brothers and sisters in the sea"

I remember that this song drew the first ever comparisons with the band Oasis upon release.

I rest my case.

Silly Game (from Rave Un2 The Joy Fantastic - 1999)

Ok, so, not really an awful song. Quite pleasant sounding in fact. But oh, so so boring!

Actually, I'm struggling to think of a more tedious Prince song.

Admit it, you'd forgotten this song existed hadn't you?

Young and Beautiful (from One Nite Alone - 2002)

Cheese beyond cheese. Cliché, cliché, cliché. Granted, this was never intended as a top-draw

piece of songwriting but I'm honestly lost for words. It's probably the LAST song I'd ever give a

mate who wanted to know what Prince's music was all about. How on earth do you go from

'How Come You Don't Call Me Anymore' to this?

Play them back to back, if you dare.

A Million Days (from Musicology - 2004)

This is probably the best song on the list, but remains one of my least favourite Prince songs.

You'd like to think that Prince wasn't really trying very hard on this song.

I simply HAVE to believe he's capable of writing a more original lyric.

Obviously, he's no Dylan (and has never professed to be), but there's no excusing the poetic

laziness on display here. Interestingly enough, listening to it now, it sounds very similar

to his performance of Foo Fighter's Best of You at Superbowl 2007.

However, that performance had such great intensity, and a blisteringly LOUD guitar solo.

Neither are present here.

Although the list is now a few years old, it would be pretty much the same if I re-did it.

Maybe I'm Yours deserves a bit more praise, it's not that bad. Animal Kingdom could easily be

replaced by Fascination off the same album. Obvioiusly, a list like this will always be purely

subjective but I reckon most people's Worst Prince Songs will contain at least some of these

songs...

O+>

I never understood why people hated Jughead so much!

I think people just jumped on that "I hate Tony M." bandwagon.

The music is FUNKY AS CAN BE, and I don't mind the lyrics. There SO MANY songs he's done that are far inferior to this tune.

And actually, the only song that I'm not crazy about on this list is We Gets Up. Everything else, I'm actually fine with... and I've always liked Animal Kingdom. smile

Different strokes for Different folks! wink

The public is squeezin' you kiddo. You'd better kick ass on your next album or else!

I LOVE Calhoun Square!

With regards to Daddy Pop... when he first performed this song on Arsenio, I LOVED it! The album version didn't live up to how great I thought this song would be.

And let's not discuss the dance routine he did during this song on Arsenio. I'm still embarrassed for him. Men shouldn't be dancing like that with other men... lol... unless they're... oh... nevermind. smile

A more legitimate answer to this question for me would be:

10. I Rock Therefore I Am: This is the first song on a Prince album that I just flat disliked. There had always been ones I didn't like as much as others, but this is the first one that really just got on my nerves. It made me realize that he had certain types of songs that he did over and over, and that the "Look how badass I am" funk numbers were wearing really thin. This type of song stopped being cool after "Now" from Gold. Maybe after "My Name Is Prince."

9. One Kiss At A Time: This song isn't awful, but it's the next example of Prince wearing out the welcome of a type of song he's done before and better. Further iterations on this motif became irrelevant after "Slow Love." It will never get any better than that.

8. Betcha By Golly Wow: I was thrilled when Prince let his ego down a little and allowed himself to start doing covers. This one, however, is awful. Just awful and irritating and horrible in every way.

7. Every Day Is A Winding Road: Ditto.

6. Dear Mr. Man: The "the world is so awful these days let me tell you what's happening" song is another one that's worn out its welcome with me. It will never be better than "Sign O The Times" and hasn't been interesting since "Chaos & Disorder."

5. Animal Kingdom: Really. Dude. What the fuck?

4. Lion of Judah: The "dogmatic religious propaganda thinly disguised as funk" has never been good. Never. The spirituality of Lovesexy etc. is a whole other thing. It's the post JW preachiness that has never set well with me and just pisses me off. I'm ignoring the existence of The Rainbow Children because I don't want to focus on it exclusively. I'll say on its behalf that the jazz experimentation was kind of cool and could have been good with decent lyrics. Also, I do like the song "Mellow" okay, it being the one song on the album that isn't JW BS.

3. The Greatest Romance Ever Sold: I don't like this song. It's hard to put my finger on why. I just don't like it and certainly find it a poor choice for a single.

2. 2045 Radical Man: Also never cool is the "song about the music business and how they've done me wrong." Save it for Oprah, dude. I'm sure you're getting a bad deal and I respect the integrity of your art and all. Sure, the artist shouldd reap the profits of his craft more-so than some talentless executives, but I don't want to shell out portions of my $10 per hour income to listen to a dude in Versace cry about how he's getting screwed over by the record labels.

1. I Hate U (Album Version): This is just me being picky because I can't think of another one I really dislike. The extended version w/o the stupid courtroom sequence is 1,000,000 times better. I just hate that part.

I labelled these countdown style but it was obvious to me very quickly that it wasn't an appropriate way to do it. This definitely isn't in any real order.
