Good bible verses I have this crazy goal to read the entire Bible, cover to cover, by the end of the year..I'm just on exodus 20 right now, but I was wondering if anybody knows what verses prince has refered to..or if anyone has any personal favorites.. What is your main problem?

i've been awake for about 5 minutes and am on my first cup of coffee so i can't really remember anything beyond the "dear mr man" bible reference when he says
"Matthew 5:5 say..the meek shall inherit the earth"
which also pops up in "For the tears in Ur Eyes".
there must be tons more but i don't think he mentions a specific book and verse as such in any other song. but a lot of his songs have lyrics that are a spin on bible verses or ideas. no just in the 00s or late 90s but as far back as the early 80s.

Like IstenSzek said, Matthew 5:5 gets a repeated look.
By and large, I can't think of many Scriptures that Prince quotes in recognizable form. He'll make contextual allusions -- like to the book of Revelation in "7" on the liner notes and in the lyrics. A lot of the flack that he caught in the 1980s was over his use of Christian references amid a hypersexual image.
For that reason, I'd encourage you to keep Prince's allusions to the Bible in perspective, and to read it on its own, without a Prince context. It's way bigger than Prince, as I'm sure you know. | |

I'm almost done reading the Bible for the third time since 2007. It's not crazy at all. The first 5 books can be very hard to read at times, especially when they start giving dimentions of the temple and all the rules for sarifice, but don't give up. It is all very prophetic as to when Jesus comes to the Earth. I, personally, find the New Testament easier to read. My favorite verse is John 8:31-36:
The Children of Abraham31To the Jews who had believed him, Jesus said, "If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples. 32Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free." 33They answered him, "We are Abraham's descendants[a] and have never been slaves of anyone. How can you say that we shall be set free?" 34Jesus replied, "I tell you the truth, everyone who sins is a slave to sin. 35Now a slave has no permanent place in the family, but a son belongs to it forever. 36So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.
Prince used this verse in the song "Beautiful loved and blessed". Making love and music are the only things worth fighting for. |

Great topic! And good for you on your goal to read ocver to cover! You have inspired me to get back on my goal of transcribing the New Testament...it sinks in better for me to write it down than to read it. Thanks for the kick start!
I have been giving a good bit of thought lately to the verses Prince has quoted in songs as well as just how many Biblical / religious references are in his work.
The song "Love" on 3121 has a quote from Matthew 12:34 "...from the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks." In all honesty I discovered this one by accident. It just came up one Sunday in a sermon and I quickly turned to the scripture the preacher referenced and sure enough...there were the lyrics to the song I had been jamming to!
"Muse to the Pharoah" on TRC refers to Proverbs 31:10 the lyric says "if the Proverb of the 31 and verse 10 becomes a song she sings again and again she might be queen." which is the passage about the virtuous woman."An excellent wife who can find? She is far more presious than jewels." ESV
Also the lyric "like a thief in the night..."is a quote from 2Peter 3:10 "But the day of the Lord will come as a theif in the night..."
"Everywhere" on TRC talks about "where the milk and honey flow" is a reference to Exodus 3:8 "...bring them...unto a land flowing with milk and honey: unto the place of the Canaanites..."
Of course the TRC album is filled with religious and Biblical references. I think that "1+1+1=3" is is a declaration that if you want to be the woman (or anyone else for that matter) in Prince's life you have to understand that God is also part of the relationship. "this is how it's gonna be, if you wanna be with me..." and I think that "The Everlasting Now" is an autobiographical tale of his conversion to the JW religion.
I could go on and on with my thoughts on "The Cross", "the Ladder" , "Freaks on this Side" , "The Love We Make", ...so many songs hint at the religious views he holds (or at least is aware of). It seems like many fans place his religious referencing music at the time of his conversion to JW but there were soooo many pre-JW references that aren't as blunt as the themes now seem to be. It appears to me that he has been a long time biblical scholar and in the past placed the references in a more cryptic way that only those in the know would catch. Now his references are much more in your face....and people try to say he has lost his edge...he obviously still has edge or people wouldn't talk about it...the edge has switched from the early days of sex and shock value, which was a turn off to a certain segment, to an edge of God and religion, which is a turn off to another segment....crafty little man...that's why I love him!
BTW not sure which version you are reading but I find the ESV to be an easier read than most. the sentence structures are more current and the translations are more literal in some cases...oh, one of my all time fave verses is Esther 4:14 "...And who knows whether you have not come to the kingdom for such a time as this?" Whenever I am in a weird place trying to figure out what is going on in my life I like to remember this verse and know that things may not be immediately apparent to me but that God has a plan for me and I just need to keep my eyes open looking for what it is he means for me to do.

I'm currently on exodus 20 and when I was reading yesterday, I did catch the milk and honey thing..I love the additional verses..I'm reading the new livig translation..the hardest part so far was to read all of the names in genesis, and yes, I read them all. once again, thank you for such a fantastic post. :hug:plopemc said: Great topic! I live by this verse in the Bible: Love your neighbor as you love God.
I also live by this: How can you hate someone who you have seen and love me who you have not seen.
Other than that, most of what has been written has been altered so much and some stories sound like fables if you actually read the whole thing. | |
