I agree with some of what you are saying, but i am willing to bet that a high percentage of those people who are selling copies of 20TEN on auction sites had to purchase the newspapers in order to get the cd, so they never really got the cd free. Situations like this will always have people taking advantage. It's all about supply and demand. As far as auction sites operating within the law, this is something which is overlooked a lot, very well known auction sites are teeming with promo only items, and in some cases blatantly obvious bootlegs.

I personally bought a few copies of 20TEN(and was later given some more) and sent them to people on the org as a gesture of goodwill. Which is not to say i did not think of putting some of them on an auction site.

Yes, of course they had to purchase the newspaper, and it cost them 65p (or €1 in Ireland). That's exactly the point, they purchased the newspaper, the album was free. My point is that they should not make money for something they got free. I have no issue with someone making back the money they have to spend getting their hands on the cd and posting it, so 65p for the newspaper and another (at most) £1.50 for postage to anywhere in the world (because we know that nobody's gonig to bother posting the actual newspaper so charging postage for it isn't fair unless they themselves ordered it from the Daily Mirror and paid their £5.99 postage).

As far as supply and demand is concerned, there is far more supply than demand. As you've said there are people on here with more than one copy, who are quite willing to send them to those who want them (and in many cases I dare say without even worrying about the small amount of postage they'd have to pay).

I just don't get why someone would knowingly put money into the hands of someone for something they got free when they could just as easily get the album from somebody on here willing to do them a favour, or from the official source, either of which would be cheaper than an online auction, the difference in price of course being profit that the seller does not deserve and should not get.

Well if you've got it already that was definitely a copy that was bought on the Saturday so the cost to your seller was 65p plus postage, whatever else you paid above that was profit they don't deserve. In the general scheme of things I guess it's not hugely important, it just annoys me that people knowingly make profit from something they got for nothing. I guess what's more important to you is that you get the album, and that I can understand totally.

PANDURITO said:

It took a little more to order from the Mirror site (about 4 minutes). I don't know when I'll receive that one.

Assuming you're in Spain (from your profile info), you should have it in a few days, definitely within a week. Although I guess you don't mind so much now that your ebay copy has arrived.

MrGravyLumps said:

I don't want to finance that sort of a publication. So I don't mind paying someone else £5 plus postage. It's not like they're selling me a bootleg, this is the very same version that came with the magazine.

Nor did I particularly, but in order to get the album there wasn't much choice. For you either.

It's either support the publication or download an illegal copy.

You do realise that what you've said can be translated as

"I don't want to finance that sort of a publication. But I don't mind indirectly financing that sort of publication by paying someone else £5 plus postage, because it's not like they're selling me a bootleg, this is the very same version that came with the magazine."

Anyway, looking back over my posts it's beginning to seem as if this is a personal crusade and I'm beginning to annoy myself now, so I'll shut up about it.

I'll just say that if Prince does a similar newspaper giveaway again I'll take pre-orders from anyone that wants one (within reason of course, I won't be buying thousands of them) and send them on free of charge.

Lemmy, Bowie, Prince, Leonard. RIP.

The album is not available here in Finland, so my only choice is to order it from Amazon, which I did and I will get it sometime within the next couple of weeks.

I e-mailed Daily Mirror last week and they said, because of high demand they have established a link where you can order this particular issue. They won't sell the album individually which is understandable. Of course, postage & handling will be added to the bill. The issue might be on sale in Finland but of course, the album is not included.

The only problem is, I don't want the magazine because I don't want to finance that sort of a publication. So I don't mind paying someone else £5 plus postage. It's not like they're selling me a bootleg, this is the very same version that came with the magazine.

Besides, the album may be free but if someone plans on selling the album via Amazon, they still have to pay for the magazine itself in order to get the album. Right? Five quid is not much anyway, the profit is not huge. I don't know what the price is for getting an issue of Daily Mirror these days.

Lol what kind of publication is it,,,, ur making out like it's a porn mag or something ?

It's a national newspaper , you would not be funding anything other than the news from that day no different to you buying the Helsinki Times...

Get over urself already

[Edited 7/18/10 18:59pm]

Huh, what are you on about?

I'm just not a big tabloid fan, that's all. Seriously, I just couldn't care less what Ashley Cole or Simon Cowell allegedly did or didn't do in their private life. Helsinki Times? Well, one thing they don't do is celebrity gossip. These two are not really in the same league, are they. Not that I read HT that much either.

UPDATE: I forgot to mention...The seller I bought 20Ten from sold it for less than Ten U.S. Dollars. They made no real profit. They had to go to a Wreck A Stow, or should I say urrr uh.. Paper A Stow? Anyway, they had to ship internationally, and will not likely make enough money to be buying a "White Mansion," anytime soon.

I got mine also, yesterday. The artwork (the picture itself) has more details that I never noticed on the digital graphics floating around on the net. Too bad the cardborad sucked. Prince could have used a heavier cardstock (I think my Planet Earth I ordered from the newspaper giveaway was a thicker stock). I love the screen printing on the cd itself.

Like a dope, I bidded in two auctions and paid more than I expect from one of the auctions, so I have two copies from auction. I also ordered newspaper from Daily Mirror.....cool It was totally worth it!!!!!!!!

Perhaps you somehow got a Flac version that was converted from the low bitrate mp3s (which should never be done IMO). Otherwise Flac files should not lose any bit data when compressed and uploaded and then decompressed for burning to CD.

Although, please remember that audio quality is limited by the hardware and software utilized, as well as the media used to store. It is impossible to recreate to exact specifications, the conditions of manufacturing a professional CD using consumer equipment.

A FLAC is an exact copy of the cd. The sound is identical. There is NO audio degredation. It has EXACTLY the punch that the physical release does.

Very true. There are many factors involved in burning a CD-R which don't come close to matching the proprietary methods of creating professionally pressed silver CDs. Dyes used on the media, analog and digital processing, age of equipment etc.

That said, a straight rip from a silver CD to Flac using up to date hardware, software and data checking methods is as good as it gets right now if someone wants portable music with no data loss. WAVs and Aiffs are space hogs, so Flac is a great alternative.

The official site sends me a copy of the paper with the CD for 4.64GBP . That's about $7.1.

If I pay $10 to someone who takes the hassle out of getting the paper, packing it and sending it I'm giving him an extra $3

What can you do with $3 anyway? I think it's quite cheap. Obviously he's not making it for the money.

shrug

If they're not in it for the money why are they being sold for more than 65p (plus postage, which for a CD from Ireland to the US would be €0.55, or €0.95 for a large (padded) envelope, and it probably costs less from the UK), so call it £1. or 1.50 max.

From the Daily Mirror website :

"Europe cost: 65p + £5.99 p&p; Rest of World: 65p + £5.99 p&p."

Just so I'm sure of what you're saying here.

It is less hassle for you to do this:

go look up an online auction site, find a copy of the album being sold by someone you most likely don't know, wait for the auction to complete (or I guess opt for the usually more expensive 'buy now' option), perform an online transaction to pay more for it than you would through the Daily Mirror website, and wait for the seller to (hopefully) post you your purchase

than it is for you to do this:

go to the Daily Mirror website, complete the online transaction, and wait for the Daily Mirror (whom I'm pretty sure you could consider to be a trusted seller) to post you your purchase.

The only up side I can see to buying it from an online autcion site is that most likely those sellers won't bother to post the newspaper along with the CD, thereby saving you the energy you might otherwise waste turning its pages, but whether it's worth paying a premium for that is debatable.

Plus, with the speed of the UK's postal service I doubt that many of the copies ordered from the Daily Mirror website have arrived yet, so any copies currently being sold through online auction sites were most likely bought on the day of the big giveaway, and therefore cost 65p. To pay more for them only encourages arseholery.

I agree going via the daily mirror would be more accountable but that price pretty much is $10. I posted a letter to Scotland the other day with recordable delivery and it cost me £5.60

Skips can usually be easily fixed unless there's a nick in the non-readable(label) side. Hold the disc up to a light. If you can see a pin-hole of light anywhere, the disc is toast, otherwise it's fixable.

Yep, should be out by July 17th in the U.S. Uh...maybe July 29? Uh...November 29? Prince will have given up on 20Ten the same way he gave up on nearly every album in the last 10 years. Only on the One Nite Alone Tour did Prince dedicate himself to more than 3 songs from his most recent album. He hasn't even played a single 20Ten Track IN FULL...unless you count medley chopped up versions as songs. Just think, Musicology, 3121, Planet Earth, and Lotus Flow3r have come and gone with no real live representation. "The Earth Tour," in London was a joke. Just a Greatest Hits tour with only Guitar getting any consitent play. I know he can't play 8 album tracks live anymore...but please play the best songs on each release... I was at one of the few shows where he played "A Million Days," and it was just a 45 sec acoustic snippet. Fury only played 3 or 4 times ever? He played Get On The Boat like it was the second coming of When Doves Cry. It's not that Boat was a bad song, but come on, it was no better than the 8th best track on 3121. "The 1 U Wanna C," was never really played in full either.

It will be interesting to see if 20Ten gets a U.S. release. I like the idea of making it free with each box of Capn' Crunch somebody had on another post. Maybe he could put in a free copy with USA Today, The New York Times, and the Tallahassee Democrat. Well, couldn't help but put in a shameless plug for the hometown rag.

It would really be weird if it never came out though. A free copy in Rolling Stone would've been pretty nice, as the mag has continued its trend of covering older artists to where you don't have to be a certain age to read it.
