"The song and dance that hides your gun..." From those who buy the silver from your tongue.
What a beautiful song! I'm a sucka for Prince' piano ballads. I certainly wouldn't mind another album with NOTHING but piano and his singing(One Night Alone has some synth and drum machine that I wish I could filter).
He should've put that gem in Musicology instead of throwing it away in some rip-off site.

1. That song just came on shuffle on my ipod today. Love it.
2. "throwing it away in some rip-off site"? You obviously got the song. Is that a rip off or garbage? "New Power slide...."

What I'm saying that more people should've been exposed to it as opposed to release it in an obscure site that only fans have access to.
And I discovered the song myself by sheer accident recently actually.

The lyrics are written by Nikka Costa right? The story goes that it was a song she was working on and Prince basically took the lyrics and completely re-worked the song into a piano ballad... Toejam @ Peach & Black Podcast: http://peachandblack.podbean.com

I don't disagree, but it was a perk/bonus for members of the fan club. A b-side of sorts. I was happy to have got it, and didn't feel ripped off at all. "New Power slide...."

great lyrics. apart from the obvious romantic context, this song also makes me think of the sophistry apparent in advertising.
sophistry being an argument which deceives.
this too shall pass | |

Thats intersting.
Is there an earlier version of this song by her?

At first, it was 'just' a poem. She sent him the poem and then he recorded it. (It might be wrong, but that's what I once read about 'Silver Tongue'.)

both this one and magnificent should have been on the musicology album instead of some of the dreck that ended up on it.

I remember liking the song, however, I only heard it a couple of times when the npgmusicclub... introduced me to it. "The Lion Sleeps Tonight...

Thats the thing!
Its too great to be a bonus/B-side, it should've been among one of his official releases.
Just my opinion anyway.

Sorry to disappoint you guys...
Silver Tongue, sounds like a cabaret song, it does nothing for me.
Maybe it's popular only because it's not released/ more rare than most Prince songs. You know, that happens often, right?...
I have just listened to ST for the first time in several years....
boring.... Prince 4Ever.

i've always thought that a single like "musicology" could have gone much further up the charts if he'd included a few bsides. both "magnificent" and "silver tongue" would have been perfect to put some more meat on that single.
what's the point anyway in releasing a single of just 1 track, in the album version when there's already an album in stores?
at least "cinnamon girl" had a UK release with "united states of division" as a bsides, together with "dear mr man (live)". i went out and bought that one on the day of release.
also, those songs may have been "virtual bsides" on his website, which is cool enough. but the soundquality is not that great. since "silver tongue" is just piano and vocals, it's not that bad to listen to, but "magnificent" which is my fav song of the whole musicology era, suffers greatly from the compressed quality of the download. i'm sure it would sound much, much better were it released on an actual single.
just like TRC. the download sounded merely 'ok' but the actual disc then enhanced upon that greatly and made the album much more enjoyable.
