Here's a question. With so many "boots" of Prince's music available, what's the point of having his vault? I mean Prince usaully works alone in his recording studio right? Is he secretly releasing stuff? Is he not aware of who has access to the vault and/or his music. While I have no complaints about "boots", I just had a question

Assuming you're referring to studio tracks only (seeing as how pretty much anyone can record a live performance) I believe that most of the stuff that shows up on boots are simply outtakes from projects that finally saw the light of day. For Prince, the songs that make the final cut of an album can change on a whim, and because of that, I'm guessing that many songs make their way to ears outside the park as various formats for the album are considered.

Prince is a legend, and whether someone personally likes his music or not, if they are in the boot business, they know his music is a valuable commodity. So I'm sure that people who steal other people's music for a living do whatever they have to do to get their hands on his music. It's just like asking why do people steal cars? Because there's money in it. So even though you may take steps to try to keep someone from stealing your car, a professional theif will still figure out a way to get your car if they really want it. Likewise with Prince's music. Prince may take steps to keep people from stealing his music, but a professional music thief will still figure out a way to get it.

I said all that to say that I believe many of the boots we hear are only an "indication" of what Prince has in the vaults. The songs buried deep in the vault that haven't had any public circulation whatsoever is what is intriguing to me. And as I've said before, who's to say that the music we're hearing today (such as Rainbow Children, and Xpectation) weren't originally in the vault and perhaps only re-recorded in somce cases with current band members? If the songs are deep in the vault, you and I have no way of ever knowing for sure.

There are a lot of great theories out there, but most of them are all wrong.

First of all Prince doesn't like any of his material floating out of Paisley Park. And no he doesn't own any of these companies, I've heard that one also. A lot of his material used to creep out of Paisley. But now the security is much more tightened so "almost" nothing new comes out of there, with the exception of a few audience recordings. Back in the day Prince was very sloppy with his recordings. he would constantly leave them in the engineering room just laying there. Or he would sometimes come in record a song and leave all the mixing to the engineer, who would be all by themselves. This would happen alot at Sunset Sound in L.A.. I personally got the Black Album on tape six weeks after it was supposed to be released.

Somebody got smart and decided to themselves. At a time when bootlegs of Prince were never heard of across the world. I did not have to look too far to find something new and cool of Prince's around the Twin Cities area. I onced laughed when a freind of mine had a friend over from the U.K.. He was boasting how he bought the "third disc" of Sign 'O' the Times for $300.00 U.S. dollars. I had those songs for a couple of years for a trade.

Prince hates Sabotage and Thunderball. In fact he calls them "the Thieves In the Temple".For those of you on valume, Thunderball used to be Moonraker.

Niether one of these companies make money, they make just enough to stay afloat.
From what I was told by someone who records alot of these shows, this really hit the boiling point when Thunderball released Dream Factory. Prince was really pissed, he really never wanted that album to see the light of day and vowed it wouldn't. This goes along with anything that has Wendy & Lisa's names attacted to it. (ie Roadhouse Garden) I once read on a NPGMC chat that Prince said he would love to release Roadhouse, but that isn't true. Every notice how all the songs on Crystal Ball that they were on, they were taken off? (except for a couple of backgroud voices).

Keep in mind these companies still have some recodings left that any Prince Fam would love to hear. Ever wanted to hear the original version of When Doves Cry? They have it. Or the Purple Rain movie backgound music? They got it. But keep in mind they've had those songs for years now when the security was non-existent. Why don't they release them now or before? Well, every year they come out with a bunch of audience recordings, rehashed older boots that are "re-mastered". Then a couple of years go by when sales slump and boom you have your new "Dream Factory".

But that's just what I'm told...

No doubt you did, only it didn't come from a sound engineer, but from a WB sales rep or a record shop manager who had a promo copy of the album on tape. This explains why so many bootlegs vary in sound quality, from the muddy to the crystal clear. I heard every Prince album from "Lovesexy" through to "Gold Experience" at least a month prior to release.
