Prince isn't creating expensive, limited, time-sensitive packages?
Did you not buy an Opus?
It was expensive, limited, and the iPod is now three generations old, so it was certainly time-sensitive!

Yes, Reznor really milked me by giving me a free album.
Hilarious. You're completely NOT GETTING IT.
Oh, and now FANS have to inform the multi-millionaire popstar which firms develop good merch?
He was a year ago.
He renewed his contract at least twice. Why didn't he renegociate the terms? Why did he sign a $100 million contract AGAINST THE ADVISE OF EVERYONE CLOSE TO HIM?
Yes, it's one of two extremes, right? Either he gets paid big time or he becomes a pauper.
Bullcrap. Bought and paid for by corporations.
It's always best in the long run to be truthful, kind and professional and I feel Prince has been this way.
So that's why virtually all of his old band members, employees etc. can't stand him? © Bart Van Hemelen

Tell me something, Bart. So what?
If Prince did everything on the chart, if Prince did everything you are suggesting, why would it matter to you? What would the benefit be?
Correct me if I am wrong, but you claim not to have liked his music for nearly 2 decades now.
Even if he had a business model that was the same as Trent Reznor's, what is the point? "New Power slide...."

One area I'm surprised Prince hasn't taken advantage of is the vinyl revival. He's got the fanbase that would buy copies of records even if they didn't have a turntable. That's a small cash cow staring him in the face for every single and album he puts out. No hard feelings.

Hey check my other post and you'll see that I truly understand where you're coming from since it was explained to me. My sympathies.
When go 2 a Prince concert or related event it's all up in the house but when log onto this site and the miasma of bitchiness is completely overwhelming!

unlike a lot of the people currently here, I was around when you started your crusade. hell, I even joined it. but really, it's time to get over it and move on.

Perhaps not time-sensitive, I'll give you that. But, a worldwide limit of 950 is not exclusive?!
Anyway, you're just "cherry-picking" ...we have only scratched the surface of what the mind can do...

All indicators are pointing in the direction that you are Reznor including your posts about the industry and your constant tweeting to Reznor's sidekick Rob Sheridan. No, I don't buy memorabilia to make profit. I had/have several copies of the same memorabilia items of Miles. You seem to want to be Prince's business manager with all your advice, why not provide the names of design companies since you are always pointing out how Prince is doing it wrong? I guess that would be way too helpful for you since it's more about vengence. A small percentage of a musician's fans will pay for expensive memorabilia and Prince has gone down the memorabilia road successfully. No reason to do memorabilia every couple of years or it's just another more expensive product. To me, real memorabilia is one of a kind items like hand written lyrics to a chart topping song (ex: Lennon) or other significant items.
As for Reznor's "sold out" deluxe editions, it is the truth that those items did not sell out or he wouldn't have advertised on Twitter that he had copies for sell 2 years later. Reznor's main flow of revenue has been touring and his last 2 tours didn't sell well. His earnings has steadly decreased over the years, especially since he gives away the music. And it's a fact that Reznor is not at Prince's level in terms of international fame, music catalogue, wealth, and the business opportunities that come Prince's way. Reznor has milked his fans by claimimg that his last tour was NIN's last and then being the "opening act" for his farewell tour after his fans purchased the tickets. He should have been upfront that NIN was the opening act.
I don't know if all of Prince's old band members, employees etc. can't stand him. But the same could be said of Reznor's old band members, employees etc.

Bart's right though in his original post. Currently Prince is doing none of those things (right or wrong).

He's not right and what you say is just out and out wrong. As Bart would put it, "LIE".
Plus, that chart is for people with an IQ of 50 or less - get with it! ...we have only scratched the surface of what the mind can do...

I've decided that Prince is a business genius when it comes to music distribution.
He's decided that no matter what protections he takes, his music is going to be downloaded by pirates. So what he's done is figured out what the maximum amount is that he thinks he would make under the old ways of distributing music, pre-internet. He probably knows which albums would be big-sellers, and which would not. And he has figured out what his "normal" or acceptable return would be on such an album.
Then he asks for that amount as an advance from whomever is going to sell it - newspapers, Target, etc.
So he's been paid what he thinks he should be paid in a world where internet downloading and bootlegging don't exist (at least, not to a significant degree).
Now, he's never going to say, "Hey, I've already been paid on 20ten. If you want to bootleg it, be my guest" but I bet that's basically his mindset. He's already captured what he thinks is the maximum reasonable expectation for the album.
So brilliant. | |
