Between January 1983 and April 1984, Prince recorded a large amount of material. These included the albums Purple Rain, The Time's Ice Cream Castle, Sheila E's The Glamorous Life and Apollonia 6. I am not sure of all the songs that were intended for Purple Rain the album, except the songs "Wednesday" and "Fathers Song." Maybe someone can clarify which songs were intended for the actual album.
This is a list of unreleased songs which were recorded during the time frame of Jan '83 and April '84.
17 Days (different to b-side version) The Bird (studio version) Computer Blue (different to album track) Electric Intercourse Electrocution I Am 5 I Would Die 4 U (studio version) Instrumental (sometimes called "Climax") Katrina's Paper Dolls Love And Sex Money My Love Belongs To You Possessed (1983 home studio version) Promise To Be True Sex Shooter (Vanity 6 version) Traffic Jam Velvet Kitty Cat Vibrator Wednesday (included in early configuration of Purple Rain) Wet Dream Cousin Wonderful Ass Fathers Song (included in earl configuration of Purple Rain, though a portion of the song was used in the movie)
Unreleased cover version : Ain't Too Proud To Beg (written by Eddie Holland)
list of songs taken from Per Nilsens "The Vault."

^ Both 'Mia Bocca' and 'G-Spot' were also in early versions of the script.

Thanks, i think Darling Nikki replaced G-Spot in the movie.

No, I heard The Beautiful Ones replaced G-Spot and Electric Intercourse.

I'm questioning it. I know there is a longer version of the song, but it's still taken from the original First Avenue recording where it was recorded along with "Baby I'm A Star" and "Purple Rain". It was one of the songs that was edited down when he put "Take Me With U" on the record (others suffering that fate were "Computer Blue", "Darling Nikki", and "The Beautiful Ones"). The mix is good and might be mistaken for a "studio" version, perhaps.
What's interesting is that there is a "live" cut of "Computer Blue" that was originally considered for the album, but P opted for the studio version we know now for the album. By "live" I mean that it was recorded in one take with the band, like "Let's Go Crazy" was recorded. That LGC version ended up on the album. The "Computer Blue" version did not. THAT is what I'd love to hear.
There's no doubt Prince probably worked on IWD4U, BIAS, and Purple Rain in the studio (either home or elsewhere) before they recorded them at First Avenue, and that there might be some sort of studio recording. IIRC, "BIAS" was written as far back as 1981 or 1982.
Hell, with the exorbitant amount of overdubs on those three tracks, one could damn well consider it a studio version anyway.

Shouldn't "Raspberry Beret", "Lust U Always", and "Traffic Jam" be on that list too?

Well, the list is of recordings made between Jan '83 and April '84. The original Raspberry Beret and Lust U Always were recorded between late '81 and December 31st '82. Traffic Jam is on the list.

The book does not state whether the "studio" version is a demo or otherwise. I am inclined to agree with you in that the song was probably demoed in the studio or rehearsal prior to the recording of the live version which ended up on the album. I would think that if there were a fully fledged studio version of IWD4U, we would have heard about it by now, and it would more than likely be in circulation.

Mia Bocca? I didn't know that.
I wish Jill would've performed a song in the movie. How can I stand 2 stay where I am? / Poor butterfly who don't understand.

Mia Bocca was included in the "Dreams" project, which eventually became Purple Rain. In the Dreams film draft, Mia Bocca was to be sung by Lisa and directed at Wendy.

I agree, the 1 person missing from the movie was Sheila E though, she should have had an 'intro' part
Jill Jones should have had a PR era album

Jill Jones should have made more albums full stop.

Ewww, gross of u. On the gross scale, I would definitely rank Ernest Sewell as way more gross than smoking weed. In fact, smoking weed isn't gross at all, maybe you should try it.

I agree. With all the amazing songs that Prince had lying around,he could have easily produced a Jill Jones debut album to be released in the summer or fall of '84.She could have benefitted from the Purple Rain hype.

I think that the commentary of the PR 20th DVD says something about how he had a bunch of songs for the movie and only 14 (+ the score). made it to the movie.
if you have not listened to the commentary it is worth it. It has some int resting info. "Keep on shilling for Big Pharm!"

Isn't the 30 minute version of "I Would Die 4 U" a studio outtake?
I would also add the "White Girls" instrumental to the aforementioned list.

You may have a point there Harlepolis, that version of IWD4U sounds live though, but could well have been recorded at a rehearsal or in the studio. Can anyone shed any light on this?

Yep, it sounds like it was recorded live in a studio with a whole ensemble(ala In A Large Room With No Light & Power Fantastic) but it can still be considered a studio outtake.
I prefer this version of the released one.

You are correct, i think this could be the unreleased version that was mentioned in The Vault book, and the one on the list i posted. I love this version too, it is maybe a bit too long, but i prefer this to the 20+ minute version of America.

Mmm Pretty sure, like 90%, that I have that studio version of IWD4U. The end of it is just slightly different and no part of it sounds like an edit. Could be "live" in the studio, but I'm pretty sure it's not the version used for the album, or the 30 minute jam which (I believe) was then edited and used as the "Extended Version" (released on those CDs everybody sent in when Prince asked for them ).
Man do I love Wet Dream Cousin. Just love it. Can't even tell you why - it just makes me happy. Would be most pleased if a remastered version of that ever made it on to a re-release or vault release.
