This Pointer Sisters song, like a lot of the pop music in the era, bit off the purple rock of the minny sound. I also hear a little Wonderful Ass influence that predates Automatic.
It's funny, when the Pointer Sister album came out I remember searching the album liner notes for clues of a Prince or alter ego connection.

The main groove is also similar to the bassline/groove in the original Shake Your Body (Down To The Ground) by The Jacksons. I can imagine Prince and the Band mashing Lavaux into their cover of that like they did with Mountains on that French TV special. Just somewhere in the middle,
Not too good and not too bad.
