To be born into a middle class, broken, black family during years of blatant racial injustices that make even today's egregiously xenobobic environment look tame. And to embrace all forms of black and white music and culture despite.

To be shuffled from household to household looking for shelter before the age of 18.

Statistically, one would assume, through his/her own prejudices or what is told to us in the media or in print, that this type of person would end up on the streets or in the American jail complex.

But, instead, he taught himself to play 17 different instruments. Instead, he changed the look and feel of pop music in America for well over a decade, and continues to inspire and influence musicians today. Instead, he built an empire through sheer will, talent, and vision that rivals the hit making machine of any musical group or legend of pst or present.

Instead, he donated 500,000 dollars to the Chicago Westside Preparitory school helping to make it possible for 17,000 principles, teachers, and administrators to be trained in the development of lower-class and urban children's education.

Now, he may be an egotistical, self-absorbed, fickle bitch....but he's still absolutely amazing.
