The One: Prince's most underrated ballad

Man I wish the rest of NPS was as good as this song. Absolutely gorgeous in every way. Incredible vocal performance, terrific production... should have been a huge hit.

Any other fans of this song? I'd say its one of the most underrapreciated songs of his career.

Great song, great video, superb vocal delivery, beautiful music.

Totally underrated.

Not sure i am such as big a fan as you are of the song, but i will agree it is one of the best on the album.

Sounds great live too.

Good song, but nothing he's ever produced before or after beats "Adore" as the stand out ballad of all Prince history.

I always loved that song. I remember when BET had its world premiere. I was on pins and needles waiting for the video, then it came and I found myself nodding my head. lol Too bad "Come On" didn't do the same lol

oh yeah Adore is his greatest ballad, hands down. it's one of those melodies that seems like it was beamed down from the heavens. classic and instantly recognizable. the arrangement, performance, everything else is perfect.

but as for underrated ballads - in addition to The One - i'd go with U Make My Sun Shine. The vocal arrangement and performance on that one is just killer.

It's not the most underrated, but it's close. Definitely one of his better songs to date.

Especially the extended version. The very end is my favorite part when he lies about all of the stuff that he'll give her. Heart, Mind, Body, and Time.

There is no extended version of "Adore". Just the album version, which is probably what you're referring to, opposed to a shorter version radio stations might have utilized.

I love the song..But I wouldnt say its the most unappreciated song of his career..

Some people think I'm kinda cute
But that don't compute when it comes 2 Y-O-U.

Why is nearly every song considered "underrated" on the Org? Every day there's 5 new threads of this ilk.

Anyways, it's a great song, but can't be considered underrated nor underappreciated seeing as how he's played it on every tour since its release, it was released as a single, had a video, and even a remix.

I consider "The One" underrated by the public at large. It was not a hit, and has never appeared on any 'hits' compilation. I'm glad that Prince has kept it alive in his shows, which would seem to indicate he's fond of the song. I just wish more people have had the chance to hear it. It came out right as Prince's public standing was about its lowest.

just one example of the many things that the Org doesn't have a problem with duplicated.

The reason that The One was not a hit and did not appear on any 'hits' compilations, is because it was never commercially released as a single.

The One was a promotional only single given to radio on 13th April '98. Despite a remix of the song and a video being made it was never released as a single. The remix ended up on special edition copies of the "Come On" single, which was released on 16th Oct '98.

Come On was the only single from Newpower Soul that had a commercial release, and even then it was only released in parts of Europe, Come On was not released in the USA despite announcements being made on the love 4 one another website.

I was going to type the same thing. Obviously Prince is proud of the song as it is a regular feature in his setlist since it was released.

Fair enough but you could say the same thing about virtually all of his post WB music.

Interestingly it seems that a release for The One may have been planned, but like many Prince projects just never happened.

After it was given to radio as a promo single on 13th April '98, the video for the song was not made until 7th June '98. The video was shot in Los Angeles and was directed by Mayte. Rita Moreno the West Side Story actress made a cameo appearance.

Then it seems that some promotion was made for the release of Newpower Soul, but the promotion was centred round Mayte having directed the video for The One. On 1st July '98, Prince was interviewed on Good Morning America, and the conversation was mainly about The One "single" and Mayte directed video. Also on the 1st July, Mayte was interviewed on BET's Planet Groove to discuss directing The One video.

But despite all this The One was never released.

Rhonda Smith's fretless bass playing was great, thats about it. the song sounds like elevator music to me. Prince said in an interview that The One was just as good as any ballad he ever did (The Beautiful Ones, Adore..). I highly doubt that. I maybe played it twice in '98 and forgot about it

Yes, I know... It would not have been a hit even if it had been released as a commercial single. My point is that it's underrated, and not well-known (or known at all) by the general public, and in my opinion it deserves to be.
