I takes a very strong Fail Concentrate, a combination of really bad music, idiotic image, and unadulterated insanity for someone of Prince's standing to go from the unrivaled critical and popular artist to the pathetic figure of ridicule and disdain. In the 90's Prince was stocking up on it at wholesale warehouse store prices.

Yeah, Prince was never an "unrivaled critical and popular artist". Even in the 80's, there were always some critics who had bad things to say about his music, not to mention his his "antics". Did you forget Under the Cherry Moon?
As far as being an "unrivaled popular artist"...the only year nobody outsold Prince was 1984.
Can we get back on topic now? "New Power slide...."

I'm sorry you must be talking about the LoveSexy period.
By the time the name change came around I think the average person was used to Prince's special brand of insanity.
Skywalker is right, though, Prince never was an "unrivaled critical and popular artist" ..at least not at the same time; beyond a few brief months in 1984.
Back on topic, I like Prince's D&P / style but near the end it just became too much and looked buffoonish. Luckily, that was swept away shortly there after.
