How daft is that, agreeing the tinterweb is deceased on an internet blog razz

Fair points though, aprt from the fact you know, it's ON the internet itself, I like that the author thought through their arguments

Grat post - thanks for pointing it out. I loved how he gives heavy props to Prince but makes mistake son the details (I'm not being sarcastic) - it comes across as so genuine and sincere.

i think he's like some of my music lover friends (or, say, my brother) who are not Prince fans due to their taste in music but massively appreciate his talent.

People, please read the piece by the blogger - instead of commenting on the headline alone.

It contains great insights, it's not at all objective, and you might disagree with it, but it does make the discussion more complex than "Internet = dead".

Let's discuss the points of the blog instead:

- The democratization of the internet creates a load of music online, concealing quality music in a vast sea of bad music.

- Itunes for instance don't offer the artists anything, they dont have to, they own the biz.

- Prince is more likely to make more money out of selling his cd along with some european newspapers than through the regular channels because of piracy, streaming etc.

So, on the one hand, for internet-lazy people like me - I barely know where to look and am put off by the masses of crap to wade through. On the other hand, when I hear a name dropped (places like this, by a mate, on the radio - yeah that, in the paper), I can instantly go and check em out, and it's far more likely I'll remember them, especially if I like them, and can pass on the link to mates. Does that mean I'll buty their album? Might. Would definitely pay to see them if they were in town...

I think people didn't get what Prince was trying to say. The fact that he made a cloudy statement like "the internet is completely over" just makes sense for both fans and detractors (and internet haters lol) to make their own opinion. Prince was saying that shit because he had a hard time distributing the music online. But I don't know how newspapers are going to do it. I feel if he feels the internet is a waste of time, be an activist of sorts and promote your music on TV, put your shit on the radio, don't just sell it to newspapers. Because of those statements, however miscontrued they are, it makes Prince seem like a 20th century-thinking, old bitty nut that fell out of favor with Cross Colors (I've been on blogs since Prince's statement and it's more or so they're calling him everything but a child of God over there).

I've read it though, not saying Prince is entirely wrong but there are ways to promote online, I just think he's having a hard problem managing how to exactly do that. JMHO.

I agree portions of being online is overrated (Twitter anyone?) lol

People like the net (Org) because it gives us an outlet to be heard. As a communication tool the internet will be here to stay, but as a distribution tool it just has not lived up to the promise that I wished for.

The blogger was correct on many levels. For instance how many people have a Youtube blog or an online radio station? Hell it's so simple that just anyone can do it but just because it can be done does not make it something that should be done.

What's wrong with online radio stations?

I went shopping with my sister the other day and we took her car, she has a regular car radio system. I heard Kathy Hughes bitching about that H-something bill and other stupid commercials, more than I heard any music.

I couldn't wait to get back to my car and my Pandora! lol

I knew from the start that I loved you with all my heart.

as a business, music is a losing game for an artist, with record companies, or with music online.

very few get the financial rewards.

Prince saying that the internet is dead is just so he can justify stealing $77 off the poor souls who paid to join Lotusflower.com.

I presume he will never have another official website again....he's bored of it now.

Fuck the funk - it's time to ditch the worn-out Vegas horns fills, pick up the geee-tar and finally ROCK THE MUTHA-FUCKER!! He hinted at this on Chaos, now it's time to step up and fully DELIVER!!

I think the problem here is that what the blooger is saying is that the Internet is dead for the music industry. They are interpreting what Prince said. I hope this is what Prince meant as it is quite an erudite and actually quite a nice argument. If Prince had expanded on his one liner and thrown this argument out there fully then I don't believe we would be hearing all the sneers we are getting now.

The bit I like about this article is the fact that the internet is peddling dross. I think it is the irony that due to the internet speeding the whole process of production to distribution up it means we are exposed to a lot more crap for which we have to wade through. (Well I don't coz so much). Also I think the argument-which to all intents and purposes is being argued almost on behalf of Prince-is that one monopoly is being replaced by another i.e. The supposed "The internet makes music democratic" is a fallacy in terms of income streams. Apart from the occasional web virus like that Justin lad an artist still needs to draw attention to the web for it to work so there is still a marketing cost.

I think the media needs to lay off Prince a bit here. When he says the internet is dead we have to remember that Prince only lives in the music world-I'm sure even he wouldnt go without email or a search engine. Unless he truly is referring to the Digital Garden

But see this is why Prince never did interviews prior to 1996. Because he never fully explains anything so he says one thing and people are lead to believe their own conclusions on what he really meant. I think it was best when he didn't say anything because it opens him up to criticism and, in some degrees, ridicule.

When a blogger needs three thousands words to explain just one phrase by Prince and ends his piece with "Look, I’m aware that I’ve ranted a bit in this post. " then you KNOW his piece is shit.

The internet is dead FOR PRINCE, because Prince has failed to make it a succes. Of course, fingers are pointed at selfish consumers, internet companies and record companies. It's everybody's fault except for 'innocent Prince'. Those who have followed Prince know better tho'.

Prince has failed due to his own bad business practices. He used to have tens of thousands of fans willing to support him. He had the chance for years to build a truly succesful fan community, but he choose to sucker them and make as much money as possible of their loyalty, in exchange for as little new and good music as posible and preferably no customer service at all. Just look at the "pretty website" y'all and be "positive".

That's why the "internet is dead" for Prince. Because of his own doing.
