It might make more sense (and rhyme better too) if it is "fear" not "fit" but then threw probably isn't correct.

But this one of my favorites on the album...catchy and a sold good track (by his current standards, not those of 1987 of course)

I think this tune is fantastic. When it starts, the synth line kind of makes me want to sing, "Where is my love life..." Then it turns into something else entirely. This album is the shit. Believe the hype.

"We so tired, said we're through with fear. There never was no hell or boogeyman here. If you see him, he's in your mirror."

Love that.

Could serve as an atheist anthem, as well as a call to arms for the (self) righteous. I know Prince is criticising the knee-jerk fatalism of major religions (except his own of course), but the cynical lyrics are more in line with his long-lost persona of humourously sceptical, the all-inclusive, us against them mantra, than anything he's done since Larry slipped his tongue inside his tight wee rectum.

That's so true. I've gotten that feeing on several tracks here. However, it's probably more to do with presentation of delivery than any real improvement in Prince's spiritual outlook.

Prince on a politico-funk shuffle. Whilst I know over time it might grab be tighter than it's current hold I am just not feeling it. In fact sadly its not until the last 30 seconds that I start to get into it. Maybe next time round it will spin it's magic but for not it's just feeling like filler - but not bad for a 5th track.

Love the vocals, the beat etc, but as the album is so strong it tends to feel like an interlude into 'Lavaux.'

Not sure if the 'Saddam' reference is outdated or is merely looking back on events. As one could look back on hurricane Katrina and not be out-of-touch.

I like the fact Prince is looking outward.

Funk is its own reward.

This is one of my favorite tracks on the album. the funky/bluesy groove is total kick azz IMO. I have absolutely no problem with the lyrics... nor do I understand why peeps keep saying they're preachy. He's making more of a political statement than anything else. And it seams that ever since he became a JW... some fans cringe at the mention of the word God.. even though he has ALWAYS made religious and political statements in the past and they had no problem with the lyrics then... so why so much now.

In fact the 'preachiness' or statements in this song are more or less no different than what he has done in many songs in the past... pre-JW days. Most notable being Sign O the Times. I never heard people have problems with the lyrics of that song... but this one they do..?

oh and lyrics wise... correction

"Tax dollars build a plane, drop a bomb

Supposedly to keep us all safe from Saddam

Bringing bad news to another war mom"

reference to 'war moms' should be kinda obvious

[Edited 7/10/10 3:56am]

Agreed. 100%. No preachiness here. Just lazy listening and knee-jerk reactions whenever Prince so much as says 'God.'

This is clearly a political, social song. Not remotely religious.

The same applies to Prince's soul ballads and r&b, it is uniformly regarded as 'bland and generic.' This is largely because many here prefer Prince's rock material.

Funk is its own reward.

Little disappointed with this track. When I had read the reviews and references to political/ social commentary I was excited. Much prefer dear Mr Man.

Listenable but kind of plods on going nowhere might be one I'll skip.

I agree.

Co-Sign. Some people on this board would not know a funk groove if it fell on their heads. They do not have the ability to enjoy the groove which is almost non-existent today’s music.

Dirty fat banker sold a house today

Sold an auction wants the family out the way

Kicked them on the street 'cause they couldn't pay the tax

Called it an act of God

I get a million dollars for people to hear me sing

Gotta get a banker half of everything

Did the founding fathers holler about the same thing (yes they did)

Called it an act of God

Well I got news for you

Freedom ain't free

They'll lock you in a cell if you try to be

The ones who say no make history

Called it an act of God

Tax dollars build a plane and drop a bomb

Supposedly to keep us all safe from Saddam

Bringing bad news to another war mom

Called it an act of God

Well I got news for you

Freedom ain't free

They'll lock you in a cell if you try to be

The ones who say no make history

Called it an act of God

Funny how nobody's holy books are the same

Everybody's God got a different name

The day it's all over it's the end of the game

And they'll call it an act of God

It'll be all over when the people are free

Free to be who and what they wanna be

Wherever we go it's up to you and me

Call it an act of God

We're so tired

Said we're through with fear

There never was no hell or boogie man here

If you just see (look) he's in your mirror

Call it an act of God

Call it what you want

Except an act of God (repeat 3x)

Call it an act of God

Call it what you want

Except an act of God (repeat 5x)
