This is one of my favorite tracks on the album. the funky/bluesy groove is total kick azz IMO. I have absolutely no problem with the lyrics... nor do I understand why peeps keep saying they're preachy. He's making more of a political statement than anything else. And it seams that ever since he became a JW... some fans cringe at the mention of the word God.. even though he has ALWAYS made religious and political statements in the past and they had no problem with the lyrics then... so why so much now.
In fact the 'preachiness' or statements in this song are more or less no different than what he has done in many songs in the past... pre-JW days. Most notable being Sign O the Times. I never heard people have problems with the lyrics of that song... but this one they do..?
oh and lyrics wise... correction
"Tax dollars build a plane, drop a bomb Supposedly to keep us all safe from Saddam Bringing bad news to another war mom"
reference to 'war moms' should be kinda obvious [Edited 7/10/10 3:56am]

Thanks Tammy
this is what I came up with:
Dirty, fat banker sold a house 2day.
I get a million dollars for people to hear me sing
Well, I got news for U, freedom aint free
Tax dollars build a plane , drop a bomb
Funny how nobody's holy books are the same Call it what u want except an act of God.

Hmm this song the more I hear it sounds more like he's saying "fuck religion" in this one than I had initially thought. Odd considering he's a JW... HMM...lol

does he really sing Saigon, not Saddam??
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
I thought he was saying war mom but I wasn't initially too sure... it sounds like his tongue gets tied whenever he sings a song with this tempo
BUT I clearly heard Saigon in this one. [Edited 7/10/10 3:59am]

Wait... lemme hear the song in the back of my head... now that you mention it, it does sound like Saddam (since it makes sense to rhyme that with bomb and mom). My ears could play tricks on me sometimes lol
Maybe this track is an outtake from "Musicology" or something... [Edited 7/10/10 4:07am]

well it's alot of "war-referance" in this album, not just in this track. But I think U might B right about the Musicology outtake theory.
Please have a look at my 1st attemt of the Lavaux Lyrics. especially in the end... I need some help.
it took a black face... Obama is like dark chocolate from Lavaux [Edited 7/10/10 4:13am]

I think my favorite lyric on this song is this:
"Freedom ain't free They'll lock you in a cell if you try to be..."

It sounds okay but the usual clumsy politics-lite/conspiracy theorist lyrics are a bit tiring.

Could serve as an atheist anthem, as well as a call to arms for the (self) righteous. I know Prince is criticising the knee-jerk fatalism of major religions (except his own of course), but the cynical lyrics are more in line with his long-lost persona of humourously sceptical, the all-inclusive, us against them mantra, than anything he's done since Larry slipped his tongue inside his tight wee rectum.

Of course, we all know it was inspired by the IRS and their audacious policy of actually making you pay for everything that surrounds you and create the societal environment which gave your talent an opportunity to prosper. What bastards!

i think he's just saying that people use the term "act of god" in the wrong way. they say it's an act of god when they do horrible (in prince's view) things.
so the "call it an act of god" behind the verses is really "YOU call that an act of god" when prince, at the end of the song, emphasizes "call it what you want EXCEPT an act of god".

That's what I mean, he's pointing out hypocrisies of the faithful while casually not mentioning his own. For starters, wearing clothes with your own picture on it. Won't his soul face the knashing of teeth for such self promoting idolatry?

he said "call it what you want except and act of god"....ur not listening.
What he is saying is that all this bullshit going on in the world that is done with our tax money and how they will take every and anything from us in taxes is something god would not do. It's not preachy to me...its a song that makes ya think.
Its a Prince take on The Beatles "Taxman" imo. Straight Jacket Funk Affair
Album plays and love for vinyl records.

I was listening - the problem here is that you can't read.
When I wrote, "I get that he's trying to draw a distinction beween things that are acts of God and acts of Man," it was a direct reference to the line, "call it what you want except an act of God."
The point of my post was that other people would likely not hear that part - and would think it was just a simple anti-tax, anti-government rant.

Sounds like Prince is channeling his inner Stevie Wonder. "You Havent Done Nothing" sort of comes to mind. Honestly when Prince wrote songs injecting his own social commentary about sociopolitical issues on the Rainbow Children album, at least the lyrics had biting and thought-provoking edge. The music is retro-NEW Wave that should have been deleted if found on the cutting room floor and lyrics that are so embarrasing naive, it's times like these that I wish he would stay in his lane. 3121 #1 THIS YEAR
