I have listened to this album 5x. While there are certainly some tight ass funk tracks and some decent ballads, I have come to the conclusion that Prince has stagnated. We are all aware that he is capable of rock, funk, r&b and jazz tracks. Why does he not push himself beyond those genres. It hurts my heart to know that this talented musician has pigeonholed himself into these "retro sounds". Half the retro sounds on this album that he is recreating he created himself. Who cares.

I have been following Stings career now for 20 years and he is now doing Classical style arrangements of his work. He hasn't done anything remotely similar to the Police in YEARS. And I read an interview with him and he said, I am not the same person that I was 25 years ago, it would sound strange for me to belt out these types of arrangements in 2010 at my age. (which is why when the police did do a reunion tour, he insisted on different arrangments for ALL of the songs).

While Prince's latest work at times is quite funky, it just feels as if he is being lazy or afraid to work and live outside of his box. I wonder if in his "vault" he has other works that are so "different and strange" that he thought his "audience" couldn't relate to that he decided not to share.

Prince needs to go somewhere so secluded from pop culture, that he would open up to other musical inspirations. South Asia or West Africa come to mind.

"different and strange"...? U had The Rainbow Children & ONA acoustic....Let me guess,u didn't like them!!

I gotta say it's rather amusing reading all these fan reviews. It's like everyone wants something different from Prince to suit there expectations of who they think Prince is and what he should be doing musically. And everyone seems to be an expert on the subject. Lol. Mostly it comes from a place of love and that's cool but I say just be happy he's still making music for us.

If you want a certain style or era go listen to that era. If you dont' like his newer music and haven't for some time move on. I truly believe if you haven't liked anything he's done in quite some time then you probably never will. And no I don't love everthing he's done but I do find something enjoyable from most of his stuff. If I didn't, I would've moved on a long time ago. Just saying. cool

Too much sense really...

Level headed, reasonable post....I guess people are getting too wrapped up in the whole Super Negro Theory thing....

Tricky and blackbob I'm with ya as well.

Just listened again last night and still think 20Ten is a great album.

It's funny because it's essentially an RnB album bookended with 2 rock/pop tunes.Compassion/Everybody Loves Me. Lay it Down excluded. Tracks 2-8 is pure Prince RnB, Soul, Funk and a bit of gospel. And to my ears it works better than most of 3121. Just my opinion folks.cool

It's all good....And i'll say it again....20TEN is not even remotely "great" in my eyes...In fact, there are some holes on this album....But it works for the most part because Prince seems to be embracing his sound without a hint of being contrived (think the likes of the lackluster and boring and silly "Chocolate Box")...I'll take a "fun" Prince album over a look-ma-no-hands musical masturbation work (News) anytime ...

I played this album for a friend of mine who jumped off the Prince wagon after the release of Purple Rain...He, like a lot of the oldschool fans dug Prince's 78-82 output more than his Revolution era stuff (I happen to like both...but that's another story)...Right away he liked most of the tracks on the album....When I asked him why he said, "This is a Prince album..."

It was simple and to the point....His comment hit me....It's all about what "Prince" first turned you on 1st....

If you started to dig Prince during the early years, then later albums like PR, Around The World In A Day and Parade sounded foreign to your ears...If you got turned on by the more diverse, chance-taking ATWIAD, Parade, and Sign O The Times, you are more prone to think For You, Prince, Dirty Mind, and Controversy were pedestrian, and at times demo-like efforts...If you were turned on by Chaos & Disorder or Rainbow Children, you probably like your Prince weird and musically out there and a bit insular...And if you got hooked on him with Musicology, you probably like the more polished, populist-driven "songwriter" Prince than the straight-no-chaser synth-funk of 20TEN....

I'm sure there are some folks who don't dig 20TEN because they think it's just not good...But I'm willing to bet that most of these folks ripping the album are doing so because Prince is not giving them the particular musical style that first turned them on....

That's evident by some of the comments...

That's what I'm sayin'. I listened to Lovesexy last night, and tonight I think I'll give Come another listen. Compare that kind of longevity to 20Ten, where in as many years' time I'll probably have to look it up on Wikipedia to even remember it's a Prince album.

Lovesexy is pretty weak. That opening track, and most of the album, has hideous production. I guarantee you that if you play both 20ten and Lovesexy to someone that is not a fan, they would prefer 20ten easily. Lovesexy is one of those albums that helped destroy Prince's commercial career.

While I myself like Lovesexy, it is definitely the album that took me the longest to get into. The mastering job on the cd version sounds like absolute ass. Also, I have never been able to get ANYONE into Lovesexy, ever. It is the only Prince record that is universally panned by everyone I know. On the other hand, several people I have played 20ten for have really enjoyed it immediately.

i dont care if other people dont like lovesexy, i like it. the record was played at a supertrendy shop about 5 years after it was released and it sounded fucking cool. This is the thing, Lovesexy is fucking cool, its attiude, its class, intelligence, its interesting, its pure. Those who dont "get" it dont want to go down that journey.

Naw man, his 80s material had serious substance. Poppy 20ten gets tiring very fast.

i think a lot of people are really getting it so totally wrong.PRINCE is first and foremost making the kind of music HE wants to make.obviously he is pleased with it, otherwise he wouldn't have released it.if we luv it ,we luv it,if we like it,we like it,and if we hate it ,well then we hate it.i look at all these "xperts" and i think wow! who is anybody to tell the man (and any artist for that matter)how to write, produce and market his work?he does it the way he wants ,it's his.take what u like and leave the rest.it's being forced on no one.i have never come across a prince cd that didn'have several songs i luved.if i didn't absolutely luv a song ,i didn't whine and complain and opined on how it could've been arranged differently.the music is in his head ,he has to let it out.this is what it is all about. i luv the man's voice ,he could sing a nursery rhyme ,scream,or croon a sexy ballad and i would be in PRINCEheaven.i also luv his varied musical styles ,so i have absolutetly no issues with his output.

well i am still playing 20ten on heavy rotation and it has got stronger for me.......its just a solid funky album for me......there are tracks here that would easily fit onto his 80s albums ....i dont think it is as good as any of his 80s albums apart from maybe batman but its a good album and i am happy with it.....i would like to see him stretch a bit muscially for his next project but 20ten is up there with lotusflower album as the best he has done since the gold experience in 95......20ten is better than 3121 , mplsound , musicology , rainbow children ( i loved the organic production and feel on rainbow but , for me , it badly lacks some decent tunes....no really strong songs on it apart from maybe the last song ) and everything else he has released in the last decade or so.......

.

as far as comparing it to lovesexy......lovesexy is a bit overrated for me by fans....i like the album but it in no way compares to sign o the times...lovesexy was overproduced imo and while it is a better album overall than 20ten......it is not a huge gap in quality imo........20ten is as funky as hell.....beginning endlessly and future soul song are as good as most of his 80s output.....no doubt about that......

That maybe, but can you not hear the 80's song(s) in 20ten in which he crafted the "new" music from. It is rather blatant lift from his past 80's music.

I certainly have enjoyed reading all of the reviews on 20TEN. It is always funny to me that every time a new Prince album comes out, there are just as many people who Love it, that hate it. This is not a bad thing to me. it just proves the broad spectrum and reach that Prince has with his music. That's why we can never really count any song out as "filler" (a word that I hate), because in the Prince world, truly, one man's trash is another man's treasure!

Having said that, I have been playing 20TEN for over a week now, and I LOVE IT! I disagree with the notion that it was just "thrown together". There are PLENTY of little details in this musical piece that are to good to have been rushed. The Vocal layering, the guitar accents, even the WAY that he used the Linn is very natual and unforced. There is a refreshing freedom to this album that even though it is reminisant of the Controversy/ 1999 era, It still feels new. His songwriting is nice as well.

Just a few notes and I'm Through:

Compassion reminds me of Play in the sunshine/ Can't Stop this feeling I Got

Beginning endlessly is nice

Future Soul Song is an instant classic

Sticky like glue is my fav of the moment

Act of God makes me think of 1+1+1 is 3

Lavaux is today's Life can be so nice

Walk in sand takes me to another place

Sea of everything is sexy sweet

Everybody Loves me reminds me of Ronnie talk to Russia

Laydown could be on the Black album

Anyway, I can't get enough of it! Just my 2 and a half cents.

Thanks for reading

Tricky and blackbob I'm with ya as well.

Just listened again last night and still think 20Ten is a great album.

It's funny because it's essentially an RnB album bookended with 2 rock/pop tunes.Compassion/Everybody Loves Me. Lay it Down excluded. Tracks 2-8 is pure Prince RnB, Soul, Funk and a bit of gospel. And to my ears it works better than most of 3121. Just my opinion folks.cool

I agree with this 100%. Tracks 2-8:

Beginning Endlessly

Future Soul Song

Sticky Like Glue

Act of God

Lavaux

Walk in Sand

Sea of Everything

Flow together so well and have a great sound to them and I can listen to them without wanting to skip a track. I'd even go as far to to say the trio of Beginning Endlessly / Future Soul Song / Sticky Like Glue are 3 of his best songs for a long time and I cant remember 3 better songs in sequence on a Prince album for a while.

The other 3 tracks -

Compassion - dont like it and is a bad opener IMO

Everybody Loves Me - is that bad its almost good, someone said Yo Gabba Gabba and thats spot on!

Laydown - different to rest of the album and thats probably why its tagged on as a hidden track

Compared to albums like Rave, Musicology, 3121 which mostly aim to be commercial, 20ten doesnt (apart from maybe Laydown), and it actually sounds like 'an album' unlike Planet Earth.

There's only really 2 or 3 songs off each of the likes of Rave, Musicology, 3121, Planet Earth, Lotus that I still listen to but after a week of 20ten I think its got a few more long term tracks on it for me.

After a week+ digesting it I really like this album. Agree with some of the above posts, my favourites are:

Beginning Endlessly

Stickly Like Glue

Lavaux

Walking in Sand

Sea Of Everything

77 (Should of been the opening track)

just a quick note: Prince's tone in "Laydown" reminds me a lot of the way he sounds in "FaceDown."

Was Prince intentionally trying to sound contemporay in "Laydown." I do not know, but what I can say is that (in response to previous comments) before there was Andre, or Outkast or the Peas for that matter, there was Prince laying down the roots.

The fact that "Laydown" features last on the release could also be interpreted as I have gone "retro" in the previous jams, but if I want to, I can do this...

it is not possible for Prince to satisfy every1...I think he sings this in one of his new jams.

you get folks who moan about how great Prince's sound was back in the day, compared to now...

...then when he goes retro, those same folks complain about him not sounding curren enough...

but as long as he keeps singing songs like "everybody loves me" for the fun of it, those who cannot play an instrument or sing a note but are masters in downloading illegal music will always be left wondering:

"huh, humph, ho, hee...there's no stopping this genius atoll"

It hasnt won mine over either, there leaving there teens soon and they still see it as just mum's old boring Prince stuff again boxed but saying that my best mate who use to be a Prince fan when we was teens, asked me about this album, which i've gotta give to her tomorrow but im afraid to give it her lol. her and hubby are into heavy metal/blues etc so now all she hears in her head really(and the rest of occassional fans) is 80s Prince, so i dont think its gonna go down too well. i think i should just burn lotusflower and give that to them instead for now, just to easy them in lol

Trsust me, they're not going to like it...I played it for some of my younger cousins, and by the second song they were banging their heads against the wall asking me to put on Justin Bieber. lol

it is not possible for Prince to satisfy every1...I think he sings this in one of his new jams.

you get folks who moan about how great Prince's sound was back in the day, compared to now...

...then when he goes retro, those same folks complain about him not sounding curren enough...

but as long as he keeps singing songs like "everybody loves me" for the fun of it, those who cannot play an instrument or sing a note but are masters in downloading illegal music will always be left wondering:

"huh, humph, ho, hee...there's no stopping this genius atoll"

biggrin

lol true.. it's interesting though how what does it 4 some does not do it 4 others?.. why some get it & others don't .

i have no huge expectations of prince, i love what i've been hearing over the past 3 years since entering the purple dimension & loving every minute exploring past & present cool

You're lucky that she even likes Parade...the "oldest schoolest" I can get from them is to listen to Bohemian Rhapsody from Glee. neutral Then they listen to the original one and say that it sucks and that this Glee thing did it better. neutral

Yeah i love it, missing the hot summer already!

nod i know that feeling..

did your friend ever hear/like planet earth? for me 20ten has a similar feel.. & while i think lflow3r is a cool album 20ten was more likeable 1st listen..

i'd stick with giving her 20ten! we know she wants 2 be dragged back in2 da purple clutches

Last night, I was getting ready to go to bed, went into the bathroom and could hear Act of God. Being played loudly.

I looked out of the window and found that my neighbour who lives across had his door open and was blaring it out proudly. haha. He's about 60+, and I wouldn't have expected him to like it. So does my mum who's 65, so maybe this old school sound he's revisiting does have an audience after all wink

blah blah blah
