So a 'Star Wars' reference from Prince eh? 'Purple Yoda' and all that.
I was actually excited to hear news that a SW reference would be appearing in a Prince song. I can't think of many other times he mentioned any movie characters in songs. At least he picked a good one!
I had a Geekgasm.

He's mentioned The Wizard of Oz a couple of times.
He's also mentioned Forrest Gump (I think on TRC somewhere)
Technically "Sometimes It Snows In April", and "Christopher Tracy's Parade" mentioned a character
He's talked about The Matrix before in interviews, as well as The Firm.
On Ellen, when he sang, "Kiss", mentioned "Sex and the City", instead of "Dynasty".
He's also mentioned Godfather 3, and Barbarella.

I think the Forrest Gump reference was in Eye Hate U. Don't hate your neighbors. Hate the media that tells you to hate your neighbors.

CORRECT! That's right! It was the remix, not the album version.

"Ask me if I care, ask me if I care, it´s like that feather in Forrest Gump baby, flaoting through the air, floating through the air."
I Hate U remix. I love those extra lyrics... (" U gave a dog a place 2 bone, and now your ass is all alone.")
He mentions a lot of movies in his songs, like the ones posted above. And he uses movies as a reference or example during most of his interviews. He really is a cineast, sometimes he comes up with the strangest stuff.... " La Dolce Vita was the knob that turned me on, Marcello Mastroianni Italian mack, coming off strong." ( The Good Life, The NPG, Exodus Album)
If I recall correctly, he used to work as an usher in a movie theatre when he was a teenager, hence his fascination with movies.
Apollonia´s name was also inspired by the Godfather, part II.

i know you're looking for movie characters right now but the only one i can come up with right now is Zuzu, from It's a wonderful life.
the rest is just movies he mentions, not specific characters.
"it's a wonderful life" in "all the midnights in the world"
"love jones" in "satisfied"
"chocolat" in "mr goodnight"

Actually no, its a little different... It goes back to D'angelo, ?uestlove and the soulquarians around the time of the making of D'angelo's Voodoo album. During those sessions, they would often take time to reverse engineer some of their favorite songs, have discussions and debates over their musical heroes. During the course of some of those debates, they coined the phrase "Yoda" as a representation of whom they considered the greatest of all time on thier musical Mount Rushmore. Amoungst the "Yoda's" were Prince, Michael Jackson, James Brown, Charles Stepney and a few others. Subsequently, when they eventually jammed with Prince, this was mentioned; As well they have been very open about it in articles & message board posts, etc...
If you check out Youtube or other "reliable places", you'll find the jams of some of those Voodoo sessions which are quite worth the time and study.
My two favorites of these sessions were their take on Earth, Wind & Fire's "Fair but so uncool" and James Brown's "Funky Drummer" and yes, ?uest can do that drum solo note for note!

I'll assume you're kiddin' around. But just for those who don't know: No. His name is Tommy Elms. Prince re-named him Barbarella. Prince was obsessed w/ the movie at the time of the D&P / albums. He even said the clothes were "Godfather III meets Barbarella". There's a clip of the movie in the 3 Chains O' Gold video too.

He's certainly the right size to be a "Purple Yoda" Do not hurry yourself in your spirit to become offended, for the taking of offense is what rests in the bosom of the stupid ones. (Ecclesiastes 7:9)

Well, since I love all the star wars epics and watched the marathon of all of them this past week-end on AMC... I must say that the character I would have loved to of been is Padme... She had such a graceful deep love, even at the end for Annikin... Before, he was lied to by the senate leader, who was the Sith Lord... And Annikin turned to the dark side from the lie of life everlasting from he to whom he would be lied to...Annikin's love turned to jelousy and in the end he is told he killed Padme, when, infact; he did not. Also note, even tho they were physically apart, each on another planet... They both went thru life and death like yin and yang thru opposite polarities together and never lost sn ounce of love for each other! That, YES, that is why I love stars wars! Thank u ankhesenamun Silence is really golden and Gold is the rose in the heart for the Rose Of Sharon is where We never departed, YHVH/INRI...me.

Here is a REAL obscure one....
In "Damned If I Do" Prince sings, "I'll fill your cup. I won't do it like Kevin." in reference to Kevin Kostner taking a piss into a cup and subsequently drinking it in Water World.

Prince is a Sci-Fi geek.
On Leno he said that the Matrix was one of his favorite movies.
Also, after one of his performances at The Celebration, he took the entire audience to see Minority Report. JERKIN' EVERYTHING IN SIGHT!!!!!

He made a Star Wars reference previously on the Rave cd. Don't you remember the song "The Sun, the Moon and Deathstar"?

Different Star Wars. I think that was more about the USA's anti-ballistic missile program.

Yes it was. I can't quite believe Prince sat and watched that awful film.
Just realised 'Laydown' is track 77 on 20Ten. Star Wars came out in '77.
Yoda wasn't in it though.
