As a long-time fan, I've found that when you tell people Prince wrote this song or that song (Manic Monday, I Feel For You and Nothing Compares 2 U probably being the most frequent, as they still tend to get airplay), you can expect 1 of 3 responses.

1. "Oh, that's interesting" and then a complete change of subject

2. They roll their eyes in a "Oh, Prince again" reaction

3. "So what?"

Or any combination of the 3.

And, you know, I can't say I blame them.

meh.

I've been in many situations where people didn't realize something was written by Prince.

Sinead O'connor's "Nothing Compares 2 U" was the first one.

I just shrug it off now because it never really sinks into folk's minds how talented Prince is anyways. They go on about their ignorant lives. lol

I feel 4 U isn't one of my favorite songs though. I wonder why folks love it so much. To men, it sounds like disco fodder and a bit boring. Prince has written far better and Chaka has sung far better.

When was this? This(Chaka's version) came about in the early days of breakdancing, I don't think or remember anyone not digging it, remember this song got Chaka back on the top in the 80's

Thing is that had prince released any of them they probably wouldnt have been the hits they would have faded into obscurity or been B sides back then for him. The Bangles at the time were coming up and were starting to catch on and YES there was talk of Manic Monday being a Prince penned track back then alot, but that talk went away because the Bangles stood strong on their own. Chaka was already established and had just had a hit single with Aint Nobody, and that annoying "chaka khan chaka khan" caught on too, but no one really cared then that it was a Prince song, and still dont care, because it really is hers in performance. And Sinead well that damn video sold this as HER song, no one thought PRINCE could be "emotional" he could only be sexual so even if you told peeps they still dont believe he wrote it.

vitriol

Take a chill pill (or drop the full box if you think it's necessary).

After that:

1) Stick to what you know (which is the true fact)

2) Stop caring about what others think

3) If you did 1 and 2 properly, you're now a happier person.

This has nothing to do with Prince changing the lyrics in recent years, and everything to do with Chaka's version being a hit, while Prince's wasn't even a single.

By your silly logic....Didn't DeAngelo write "She's always in my hair"

After all it was a hit....a definite commercial success and If Prince changed the lyrics to From she's always in my hair to "Jesus is always in my Life" then I would be wrong??? No I am right...no one new understands his new JW format. The original is the original Period....

You are not right about any of this bull. People are just plain uninformed about a lot of stuff P has written. A simple internet search can prove what P has written but most people will not take the time to even look. "I Feel For You" was not a hit for Prince it was a hit for Chaka so a lot of uninformed people assume she wrote it. I have run into people who do not beleive P wrote The Time material when they can easily check it out for themselves they still argue that The Time had better music when it was all P's music.

my fat old stepmother argued about the same thing back in the day. I don't even mess with that debate anymore. I just shake my head and eat a bag of Doritos.
