i bought the "1800-Funk" vinyle yesterday... Almost blindly because it was a Prince-related project... And the price was the reason too: 3.99 euros...

Well so far I dont like it much..; I love "Lovesign" with Nona and the Mavs Staples song... "Hollywood" by George Clinton is quite a mess

Whats your opinion about this album?

It's Paisley Park throwaways; with the exception of "Love Sign" which seemed to be intended to be a hit.

Haven't listened to it since it was new.

I remember liking it a lot back when it came out. I hadn't listened to it in years until recently and I didn't dig it the same. the only tracks that I still liked was "Love Sign" and the Madhouse intrumental, "17", I think.

love it. "standing at the altar" is fantastic.

Really wish he'd put this on something of his own Probably the only song I thoroughly enjoy on that album, including Lovesign.

I'm sure there was a full 5 minutes in there somewhere that each of these acts was going to get its own album on NPG records. but we know how quickly that kind of though passes. MPLS is one of the better ones, really. the ones not written and/or produced by him are the puzzlers to me.

I'm not a fan of anything Sonny T contributes vocals to, honestly. I don't think his voice is at all appealing. Thus, MPLS, to me, is not a good track.

If you can pick up a copy cheaply enough, and you want a complete Prince collection, then it is something you have to have. But please do not spend a lot of money on it.

I have seen still sealed copies on cd on ebay for large amounts of money..........not worth it.

Yep/ Some good. Some so-so. Some crap. But which is which depends who u ask.

I like Standin' at the altar and You Will B Moved a lot. I also quite like MPLS.

The thing about this album. tho, is it's very accessible. I've had parties where I've put it on and everyone got into it. U can't do that with most genuine Prince albums...

I think Margie Cox's track is the weakest, but I still love the whole thing. Specially MPLS, the Madhouse Track, Lovesign and, yes, Hollywood.

Great, fun, funky pop.

I enjoy it. There's nothing on there I don't like, even if not everything is brilliant.

Was it always destined for the 1-800 NEW FUNK album or was it configured to appear on The Gold Experience?

I can't remember seeing it on the early configurations of Come.

I've misplaced Per Nielsen's Days Of Wild (the Prince bible!) and feel lost without it...

It needed to be on an album, or a b-side at least. Prince only released it to radio stations as a promotional copy, which didn't allow it to counted on the charts. It did get some decent radio play on Urban stations, and there was a video made of it. I believe it was directed by Dr. Dre. Most of the video was shot at Paisley Park, of course.

Since it's been a while, I went back and relistened to this album.

MPLS - "Minneapolis". That bass line is funky as hell! The lyrics are pretty funny, and are indicative of Prince's state of mind at the time w/ record labels, people around him, etc.

George Clinton - "Hollywood". Not a bad tune. Sure it's not "Up For The Down Stroke", but I could hear it played next to

NPG - "2gether". Musically, I like it. It could have been a good track on Diamonds and Pearls, but with farkin' Tony M. all over it, it blows monkey balls.

Mayte - "If I Luv u 2Nite". Not since "I Feel For You" has Prince gotten so much tread out of one song. I think I've just heard enough versions over the years that Mayte's is just another in the heap. Unfortunately, Prince had started to follow trends by this point, and the 90's sound makes the song (and some of the others) have a very dated sound to them.

The Steeles - "Color". Not a bad song, but the production is very dated. Put in some live drums, a Hammond organ and it might have been something a bit more special.

Margie Cox - "Standing At The Alter". Just a fanastic song. Like I said before, it's like "17 Days" in that it's a song looking for an album to land on. I actually think it would have been a great duet w/ Prince, and should have landed on an album somewhere "We March" fits in production and lyrical content on The Gold Experience, but perhaps somewhere else would have worked.

Mavis Staples - "You Will Be Moved". Average song from a stellar performer in the industry. I would have liked to have seen someone else produce that track, because it's still a "Prince production".

Madhouse - "17". Not even close. It's not a horrible instrumental, but until I hear it in the context of a Madhouse album, it ain't Madhouse to me. How many "17" have there been anyway? Three?

Prince & Nona Gaye - "Love Sign". I always loved the song, and enjoyed the video. It's a bit comical. As if Nona, a hired assassin, is going to put off shooting Prince because he throws up the letter "L" with an extra finger. That is the Love Sign? REALLY? I can appreciate what he was trying to say in the song though.

Nona Gaye - "A Woman's Gotta Have It". An interesting take on a Bobby Womack song. I like it.

I'll agree with you about Sonny's vocal abilities. Fortunately for this track his vocals are heavily processed and mixed with others'.

Were any other producers other than P involved in this album?

Never bought this one, even though I remember seeing it in a bargin bin YEARS ago (back when music stores WITH bargin bins exsisted!). I'm becoming a completist when it comes to commerically available stuff, so I'll buy it if it's still bargin bin priced. "Love Sign" is hot!

Hollywood was produced by Dallas Austin, NOT Prince. So please do not fault Prince for that mess.
