I totally and completely disagree on anything lacking in Prince's solo. This was a funk tune, and it was Stevie's funk tune. The groove didn't call for anything more than what he gave. Extremely funky. On a side note, will there ever be a time when Sheila E. isn''t gorgeous? Dayum.......

I've always felt that way too, but for some reason I started thinking it again when I saw them at the ALMA awards. They compliment each other on so many levels.

Some of us have been lucky enough to hear Prince perform this very same song at aftershow concerts and play the hell out of it in his own style. He can do that, he's done it and it's on tape. This time around, it was a Stevie Wonder show and Prince did the respectful thing, sat back and busted a few funky chops on guitar without upstaging the main man of the moment.

And you are getting so defensive because.....? Is Prince not a musical genius capable of going note for note with the GREATS? Yet, given the oppurtunity, he does not live up to those type of labels. I doubt any stage musician or performer would be intimidated by playing a few bars with Steve. I think most would jump at the chance. Especially one of Prince's experience. It's curious why sometimes he seems to have trouble playing spontaneously. I saw a bootleg from Bunker's in Minneapolis and I think he had the same trouble there. I wonder what the problem is.

I'm sorry, but with all due respect, you REALLY do not know what you are talking about. Are you a musician? I do not care how talented someone is, it is not easy to just jump on stage and start playing. You have to get a sound and feel for what is going on. Many of the "spontaneous" sessions that you have probably seen have been rehearsed or the musicians are familiar with one another and have played the songs on several occaisions. Nevertheless, Prince is not one to upstage the people he is playing with when he respects them, so you are not going to see him go all out in Prince mode while GUESTING with Stevie Wonder.

With regard to the Bunker's video you saw, there could have been issues with the sound, timing, etc. I remember being there one time when the Combo played DayDreaming, and as great as they are it was off in the beginning. Afterward, Margie Cox told me how it was difficult to get a feel for it at first because the drummer's timing, and this is someone she plays with every week.

Wow. This is like seeing a UFO. Total magic. I got goosebumps just watching the footage. I also like how Prince takes Sheila's hand at the end. They must still have a lot of love for one another after all this time. And I do think Prince was being conscious of Stevie so all the haters claiming he choked need to get a grip. This is Prince were talking about not some rookie. Maybe they had a private jam session after. We know how Prince loves to do that with just a small select crowd.

Um yeah I do know what I'm talking about and no it's not nearly as difficult as all of that if you've got the skills. This thread is full of people making excuses. On one hand you argue a spontaneous solo was too difficult then on the other hand you argue that Prince didn't solo out of respect for Stevie. You can't have it both ways. All the while Stevie is BEGGING PRINCE TO SHRED and P gave him nothing. How is that showing respect? He left a blind man hanging out to dry at his own show. Stevie can't see Prince's facial expressions. He's trying to figure out what the freak is going on. And did you also notice Stevie inviting Prince to stay for more songs and Prince walking away. That's not respect. If it were Prince's show and say Lenny Kravitz or someone acted similarly y'all would never let them live it down.

Prince played Superstition on more then a few ocassions,he knows to play it on guitAr,keys and drums.

in 1997 Prince on drums,Rhonda on bass ,Kat dyson on guitar and Stevie on keys and vox played it in some small club.

I think Prionce didn't want to play complet keyboard riff

because it was planned to bring him his hohner.

Maybe Stevie expected guitar solo but i'm sure he loved Prince's

funky chicken skratch guitar.

And it's not inteligent to say thaT Superstion isn't a guitar song.

Jeff Beck.

Beck recorded his version in 1972 ,he should have realised first but Stevie realeased his version first so it turned out like Jeff was covering Stevie,yet it was the other way around.

Superstition is one of the most known funk rockers ,

clavinet lick played by Stevie is played in unis with electric guitar.

I doubt that Prince is nervous in the presence of the Stevie.

Here's some different video of the appearance, taken from dead center in the house. It is clear that Prince is having fun (ie, does not feel out outclassed or embarrassed - look at that smile) and that Stevie is enjoying his presence.

Yep that clip showcases Prince was doing just fine and enjoying himself and Stevie enjoyed it very much also. You know Keith John? A very great and underrated singer. One of the guitarists in Stevie's band is on my friends list and my sister is cool with him. It was a great night and Prince did just fine. What a great moment!

I agree - he's a very underrated singer. Did you know he's the son of Little Willie John? I guess when Stevie was just starting out in the music business, someone put on a Little Willie John record and told Stevie, "Sing like that." After Willie John died, and when Keith grew up, Stevie said he'd always have a job with him. That's how my sister met Keith - she was a flight attendant on a layover in Seoul, Stevie was performing in Korea, and his entourage was staying at the same hotel.

Anyway, that night at Summerfest, Keith sang "Fever" - his dad's signature song. He sounds just like him.

You could see P looking around for the distortion pedal at one point, making eye contact with the techs, and when he realised there wasn't one, all he could really do was hang back a scratch like a chicken. A shame, really.

Wow, thanks for sharing, a wonderful story! Yes I did know he's the son of Little Willie John and he's underrated as well, especially with younger people. I'm fortunate that even though I'm in my mid 20s I know about music like that, being a musician myself also, and a huge fan of Stevie because of my father early on. Your sister is blessed to have him as a friend I hear he's a wonderful person.

My sister has a picture with Keith, during the meet and greet in Rotterdam in 2008.

Man I wish Stevie and Prince could jam together all of the time!

Yeah, he sounds awesome doing his classic chicken scatching, i dont know what people are talking about. It sounds great to me, he is such a pro on stage nowadays there is no way he could not sound good even if he tried.

Prince looked and sounded great to me. I don't know what some of you were watching.
