What Is Your Honest Opinion of Prince

With all the Lifetime Achievement awards recently, the way he distributes his music and not to mention old girlfirends and wives posting trash about him lol What's your honest opinion about him as a musician, a singer and just a man in general? Let's have a serious discussion about the man who brings us to this site daily eek

I must admit at times I am kinda torn on my admiration for Prince. There are days when his music brings smiles to my face, then there are times where you're reading old articles about him and just can't believe it's true. There are times when I think of such things as PFU and Lotusflower.com and it really pisses me off, but then I go and buy 21 nights or the latest Prince cd and all is well lol

It's kind of a love/hate relationship-it's strange. I think in the end all this is just apart of being a Prince fan lol Let's Discuss wink

I like the guy a lot but I don't like everything he does. He's always been confident and he always does things his way and I love that about him. However, even though he does things his way, there are things that he's done that I wish he didn't do with his career and his music, from the past and today and I won't lie, I wish he wasn't a JW BUT I respect that he is. Besides, I don't know him and what he's gone through in every aspect of his life to get to where he is today. He has made and still keeps on making music that I enjoy the hell out of and it's why I am still here as a fan today. I hope he keeps on growing and learing from life and from experiences and as a fan, I hope that he shares those experiences with us through his music. As long as he's doing that, I will always be a fan of his.

But now I can understand why and I am still a fan and I still love the music. I think you're right since we don't know him personally the music is all we can use to gauge this whole Prince thing by and so far he gets an A from me on that wink

All the stories, bad or otherwise about his treatment of fans/ex wives/girlfriends/band members blah blah, does not really mean anything to me.

Yes, i have read stuff about his business methods, his personal life and such, and thought this guy can be such a p****, but at the end of the day that is part of what makes him Prince, it is what he is, what he has decided, good or bad.

The thing which is of importance to me is the music, always has been, always will be. It is what keeps me spending money on him, it is what keeps me listening, it is what makes me log onto this site nearly every day. Music, not whether he likes a particular type of food, of who he might be sleeping with etc.

For me, Prince is a fantastic and very gifted singer, songwriter, musician, performer, producer, whatever.

In my opinion there is no one who can match him, he is one of a kind in many ways.

All this may sound like a clique but it is how i feel, and have felt for a very long time.

So long as he can write, record and perform music, i think i will always support him, even if that music is sometimes not to my particular liking.

He gets an A from me too. When I saw him on Sunday and even when I saw him in person a couple of weeks ago, he looked great and he really did look more at ease than I had seen him before. Whoever or whatever you believe where religion/spirituality is concerned, we should all have joy and peace in our lives and I hope and pray that he truly is at peace with himself as it appears that he is.

I agree with this and it was nicely said wink I think sometimes we as fans kinda get caught up in other stuff like you mentioned and it's not really any of our business. Though all those things may be interesting at times lol it's really all about the way this man's music has made us all feel. His music has influenced so many of our lives this is why I couldn't understand why he says most of the things he did were mistakes. Does he realize how many young minds he actually helped to shape? and I mean in a good way. Because of Prince I know what good music really is and I am truly grateful for that.

Yes, things such as his likes and dislikes, and aspects of his personal life and business methods can be interesting, and i am not putting down anyone in any way who may find that kind of stuff important.

But for me it is the music that is of importance, everything else is secondary.

Prince is without question one of thee most talented single individuals 2 ever decide 2 make music 4 public consumption. He is also quite bold in his unrelenting desire 2 do things against the grain regardless of the outcome. I love it and hope that he keeps it up.

There has not been a single artist in my music world that does it better.

PERIOD.

The personal stuff? As long as he is happy with it and keeps the music coming............more Power.

I kinda look at it this way-that yes those things really should be off limits to fans, but all those things have gone into making the artist that we love.

I agree, it seems that he's happier than he's ever been in his life and I think we should we celebrate that he's happy. A lot of great artists sadly struggle with an emptiness/sadness or other things and I am glad that Prince has peace within him by becoming a JW.

As far as musically, he's has a great voice and he's a really fantastic guitar player. I do think that his recent works haven't been good but there is still a few decent songs on each album up to now.

I never really thought about it, but you're right. There have been so many great artist who always struggled to find peace within themselves eek The main one that comes to mind for me was Marvin Gaye-such a great talent, but really tormented inside. I am happy for Prince that he is growing older with dignity and seems to have made peace with his inner issues. I'm happy to be a fan of such a person.

When I read the thread title, I thought: "Here we go again... rolleyes " because the fams and the haters are about to throw down. bitchfight

My answer:

I like that Prince is still making music. I was talking to one of my students who had watched the BET Awards, and he told me he turned it off before the tribute because he "only knows a couple of songs, but [his] mom likes him." We started talking about why I'm a fan, and I couldn't give him a definitive answer, just that I love his music. He made some comment about how "all females think he's so fine" and I told him that Prince is not my type, and that it really IS about the music for me.

I said that I think it's impressive that he's still making music after all these years. I asked him if he thought any of the artists they listen to now will be around over 30 years from now. He couldn't name one that he felt that way about, so I told him, "You guys can't fault me for still liking an artist who has lasted this long. He started when I was in 7th grade. That's a long time."

He agreed, and said he might give him another listen. wink

I can't give you an honest opinion of Prince himself, because I don't know him. How he worships, who he dates- those things are not our business. I get so annoyed when people on here act like he needs to call THEM for approval. confused

This is how I feel:

- Like his music? Remain a fan./ Not anymore? Find another artist.

- Don't like his business practices? Find another artist and stop whining, because somehow you still get the music. AND he's not applying his practices to handling your budget, so let it go.

- Think that he has to clear personal life decisions with you? Get a life, or at least don't subject us to your complaining all the time.

You wanted honest. lol

My first album listening all the way thru as a fan of Prince to right now I feel P is a musical genius but, I've come to find that he's out of touch with the daily life that you or I know and live. He's been in his own world since forming The Revolution. Once he became a millionaire he lost touch with the basic human understandings of things. That does not stop the love and admiration I have for him being an artist and musician. Sometimes, just sometimes, I wish he could just see what's really goind on. I love the cat though, I have to say that.

nod Absolutely. You pretty much summed it up for me Gray. I admire him for his willingness/boldness/risks he takes, regardless of the type of criticism he receives from some of his fans or the media. He obviously doesn't let any of that put a dent in his life or stop him from living it, the way he chooses, whether its based on his music, his spiritual beliefs or personal life.

I am also a musician that plays multiple instruments. IMHO Prince is the greatest recording artist and one of the greatest musicians ever. Since I have a musician's ear I hear a lot of things that Prince does in the studio that the casual listener misses. Some of his greatest works are still in the vault though. Right now he's being misguided by a brainwashing cult with false doctrine. what a shame

to me, he's the best musically.

I'm disappointed he's still holding back music even after freedom from WB. he records way more than he releases. I'd ideally like him to have a stable website, release music digitally as he records it. he could have his own store, sell songs at 0.99 a pop.

He could release music digitally with no distribution costs. sure there may be pirating, but that's going to happen anyway. He seems more concerned with finances, than just getting his music out there.

He is a true individual. As such I think he is actually a brave individual. To me all the other stuff stems from this coz to be brave can be seen to be arrogant and/or foolish.

Regardless of what we may want from him musically or otherwise his individuality and bravery have remained an absolute constant within his career.
