How cool would this be? Okay, let me preface this by saying I know Prince's contrary ass would never do it.
But, anyway...
At their US tour dates, OK Go sold USB drives after every show that had the audio recording of that night's show, their latest album and three videos from the album.
Can you imagine? He wouldn't be able to make enough of these. Between the people at the shows - and all the people the people at the shows would be asked to buy them for, he'd clean up. We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

That would be mad hot, if something like that took place ... Peace ... & Stay Funky ...

The drives should have a FireWire800 interface as well.
Just sayin'!

Would we have to wait around for a couple of hours while Prince first listens to it, decides it's not up to par and heads to the studio to put overdubs on it, then brings the USB's back, we buy them filling Prince's pockets with $$$'s, get them home, eagerly plug them in, palms all sweaty with excitement to find a copy of...

Do we have to imagine how it would go wrong?
I already acknowledged that it will never happen. [Edited 6/29/10 14:11pm] We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

Or some similar type of Prince-like shenanigans.

Look what they did - so cool...

It's just as much a waste of time imagining Prince doing something so right, that indeed, sadly won't ever happen.

It is a cool idea. I think other bands may have used this method in the past too, not 100% on this though. It would be a great, quick method of getting a quality recording of the gig you just attended. Can you imagine? Ebay would be flooded with them.

It certainly would. But, hey - as long as Prince gets his, why should he care? We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

They could limit the drives to 1 or 2 per ticket holder, that would reduce the risk of people buying them for possible profit.

It would also help to sell the drives online - as OK Go has done. If you can get one for $20 directly from the artist, the profit motive is gone. Well...at least until the official ones sell out. We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

Yup - right after they find a cure for craniorectal impaction. We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

What would be the deal with getting your USB drive home and burning 10 copies to disc to pass to your friends? Would that be possible? (pardon my ignorance on the subject) I am sure an artist like Prince would have concerns regarding people making 'copies'. Would there be a way to maybe put something in the data to stop you doing so? Like some kind of copy protection?

you think about something like this? http://simfylive.com/
I was at a Xavier Naidoo Concert and right after the concert you were able to buy 3/4 of the concert on a stick (btw in a nice package). In the package was a code for downloading the rest of the concert and the encores via the website.

Cool site. I am sure Beck has done something like this, nothing on his site about it though. I'm sure i read something about him either having done it or looking into doing it, if i find the article i will post the relevant quotes.

That would be hot, much more forward thinking than putting copies in newspapers, giving the fans the memory of what they just witnessed.

George Clinton set it up on CDs a few years ago. Worked in the same way.
