For U is out of Print

I was making an order this week from my distributor and noticed For U is now out of print. Any chance that there is a deal is play and we will get the Prince remasters starting with For U? There are only 13 original albums still in print in the USA as of now. This does not include the best ofs. Or does it mean that Prince now has that master? and every year one by one they others will go out of print too? Just curious if anyone knows.

The correct album title is For You. Maybe that will help.

For You ownership will revert to Prince in 2013 (35 years after the issue date).

We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

I was under the impression that the rights to the albums turned over to Prince after 35 years, which would mean he wouldn't get the rights to For You until 2013. It's possible that WB is simply letting the albums which just don't sell languish on the vine.

I would not look forward to Prince reestablishing For U's printing any time soon, but I could obviously be very wrong about that. Just speculation on my part.

I don't know what page you were clicking at, but the link I provided says "In Stock." in bold green letters.

Amazon aren't the manufacturer of the CD's. I was under the impression that the original post was referring to ordering them from the source

Out of Print means it is not receiving further printing of the album.

Out of Print does not mean it is not in stock at music-selling websites.

Oh ok, my mistake then.

I thought the poster meant that the album is no longer in stock.

Nah, the OP is probably a shop owner and was making an order from his distributor who was out of stock of the album and received word from the manufacturer that no further printings of the album would be made. (AKA its deleted from the catalog, like The Gold Experience was after.... I think 1 or 2 printings?? Someone can correct me.)

You can download it though right? The younger generation is not really deep into CD's like that I give 10 years and you won't see CD outside of vintage "Record Stores "

Prince met with WB recently. Rubber-stamping re-pressings of OOP titles could very well have been the main reason he was there. His entire catalog went out-of-print a couple years ago, so it happens occasionally. It's in his best interest to allow WB to run another batch as long as both parties see that money can be made. NOS of For You can of course be found in stores and on the Amazon third-party Marketplace. If you don't have For You by now, you might as well get the Japanese SHM if you can find it reasonably priced - the packaging is really sweet.

If prince.org were to be made idiot proof, someone would just invent a better idiot.

What's the difference from the normal version?

Nothing of importance sound-wise. SHM is a gimmick based around their special proprietary plastic coating over the data layer that is supposed to create less laser scatter. The packaging is extremely nice, though.

BlackbeltJones bought them all and did a blind listening test. http://prince.org/msg/7/3...4&pg=1 He concluded that there were probably some marginal EQ tweaks that sometimes sounded a little better and sometimes a little worse than the US pressings. Side-by-side waveform comparisons back this up and also show that the loudness was increased slightly. All of the anomalies in the US CDs were present in the SHM discs, so the same source was used.

Thanks my distributor does have the Japanese pressing. Cost is 19.74 and retails for 29.99. I will let my customers know. As of now it is out of print in the USA. More than half of his catalogue is out of print in the USA. Thats a shame. At least the essential stuff from the 80s is still available for now. There were some good releases in the 90s though like symbol and gold that i wish they would rerelease. I sell alot of Gold cds as special orders. That one would still sell. The symbol and Gold were my two favorite Prince cds too!! I cant believe they didnt sell. I thought they were great!! Oh well, I guess what I like by him is not what others like. Thanks for the info on the For U album. Its much appreciated!!

Note that the Japanese SHM discs are all OOP now too, so if you can get them from your distributor as NOS, you may want to stock-pile them. I guess the run was really small.
