more than happy to leave it in the hands of those who view Prince as purely a commodity that should be pimped out until there's nothings left of it.

they'll be happy i'm sure, to make so much money and gain so much fleeting prestige, while his entire legacy gets flushed down the commercial drain pipe of transient and highly unnecessary fodder.

mm sounds good. thumbs up!

sorry dude, I thought you were joking about this. There are so many things on this list that are pretty important for publicity and actually making money... like playing more than 5 dates on a tour. Seriously, I am still thinking you are punking everyone with this list because most of it seems counter productive to success.

The expanded version of my book PRINCE and The Purple Rain Era Studio Sessions 1983-1984 was released in November 2018. (www.amazon.com/gp/product/1538114623/ref=dbs_a_def_rwt_bibl_vppi_i0) or www.facebook.com/groups/1...104195943/

i started this thread cuz in a different thread i read where somewhere else said "if i were Prince's manager.." and thought i'd entertain the idea.

but it got me to thinking, and i know what you mean about my list seeming counter-productive to success, but if you read my subsequent 13 points it'll all make sense.

Prince is already successful, and like i said earlier, in my humble opinion, management for him right now should be about preservation, also in one of my other posts.

cheers dude no sweat and thanks for posting. cool

enter his UK representative and Prince's ignorance of his own true value here.

you'd think he'd have some clue of his real worth by now.

If I was Princes manager I would do the following

1. Open a website with ALL his music for sale. Bootlegs, live performances, and video downloads. This would be a Point of Purchase site nothing more nothing less. No monthly fees. So then he can have a place to release songs as a test as well as to keep up with his output.
2. Second I would have him give his latest project to various producers for a double album. one with his versions the other with remixes for no other reason than to have some buzz on the remixes since its never been done before
3. I would have someone go over his books to be sure everything is in order. There are too many stories of unpaid people for Prince to allow that to go unchecked
I would start there

If I were Prince's manager, I'd have jumped off a bridge long ago.

Seriously, Prince needs to just focus on putting out good material. He hasn't done anything interesting in years. He needs to come off his high horse and submit to some interesting collaborations-- and I don't mean with somebody like Lenny Kravitz or Tony Bennett.

Now, Wendy and Lisa would be ok-- but I won't beat that drum.

If I were Prince's manager I would have a much different list:

1) Let someone Else Produce an Album for you- We all know that P would never let this happen. He's produced himself for 30 years and he'll be damned to let someone like Timbaland produce an album for him (no matter how good it would be). But Hypothetically what if Prince HAD TO listen to me ha ha ha. With each and every album release, Prince's discography is getting known less and less for it's quality and more and more merely for it's quantity. Prince needs more 3121 and less Planet Earth. Most of Prince's best work (PR, 1999, SOTT) came when he was working closely with other musicians and experimenting with their styles. Whether we want to admit it or not, a lot of Prince's best stuff were collaborative efforts. Prince left to his own devices becomes self indulgent and stale.

2) Quit talking about religion- What P does in the Privacy of his own home is his own bussiness. But the casual Fan doesn't want this watchtower crap rammed down their throats. BTW, how does it make sense for a guy to sing "Dance Music Sex Romance" and then 5 minutes later grill a crowd about the bible? Keep your religion to yourself Mr. Nelson

3) Start making sexy music and Swear if need be- More in the vein of Black Sweat and Guitar. Prince has it in him to make sexy dance music that can be played on the radio and have name recognition with the public at large, but he needs to blow the dam and let his old school nastiness come out.

4) No More Proteges- It's been 20 years since Prince had a meaningful side project. It's time to give it a rest. These exercises take away from Prince's creative juices at a time when I feel he doesn't have enough creative juices to spare. Also, as we clearly saw with Prince's live rendition of elixir, his versions of tracks are often FAR superior to the women he's giving them to. Elixir (the song) would have fit nicely on LF imo. Also I can't even keep these girls straight. For a while I though that Bria was Manny was Tamar. These Girls don't have the personality or chops of a Sheila E or a Vanity and money and energy should not be given to them.

5) Get album art that doesn't suck- LotusFlow3r and Planet Earth both had TERRIBLE cover art. LF is laughably bad and it's tough for the casual listener to take music serious when it's packaged so poorly. Even 3121 and Musicology had so so album covers. More art like SOTT and less like Gold Experience. I work with kids, and I know some 14yr olds who can whip up better computer art then that rink-a-dink LF cover in a few hours. That album cover was Hideous.

6) Make music videos that are made to interest new fans- With the songs Musicology, Call My Name, Black Sweat and TAC Prince spent a lot of money producing high class videos that looked good. He needs to keep this up but make sure the songs are one's people actually want to hear. More Black Sweat less TAC (pretty song but it would never have been a hit).

That's it. My six stage approach to helping Prince's career. Didn't mean for it to be such an essay

[Edited 6/26/10 8:07am]

You make some fine points, especially when you seem to suggest that Prince get over the notion that he can just put anything out and because some people call him a genius, it's a work of genius. The tank is really low.

1. I'd sit with Prince and discuss where he wanted to go next; what his objectives are/were

2. I would construct a strategic plan with specific goals, benchmarks and outcomes

3. Propose the plan to Prince

4. Review the plan daily to determine if we're on course

5. Possibly enlist a focus group for some feedback

6. Check back with Prince to make sure we're on the same page and the goals and methods have not changed

7. Tweak the plan, if necessary, and to add unforseeable opportunities or issues to address

8. Check off achieved goals

9. Remind Prince (in a nice way) how lucky he was to have me smile

10. Begin working on next plan

11. Start over at #1

cool

Tell him to write a bunch of great songs (this new album has several). Get with his band, learn to play them live to perfection (ala Fury on SNL) and go in the studio and record them with the band! THAT would be his true return to form!

lol @ people thinking they're going to change a 52-year-old man.

lol This reminded me of a long coversation my dad had with me about men of a certain age. YA CAN'T CHANGE 'EM!!

But, let's pretend for a minute...

1-More touring of the Midwest, East, South. How much love does the West coast need?

2-Much more love (appearances) to underground places/joints

3- SOME kind of franchise. Remember the NPG Music Club store? Yeah. Pillows, blank notebooks, tambourines, picks, incense and candles.... eek Not too much overkill, but just enough.

4-IF any site comes into existence, there should only be one. But no fees for membership. NONE. ZIP. ZILCH.

5-T-shirts? See #3.

6-More interviews. Classy shows, fun shows. STOP HIDIN! Let the people know you're here, you're ready, and the show ain't ovah!

7-Finding proteges and sticking with them longer than a year, year and a half. (Where the [expletive deleted] is Tamar?)

8-Some kind of official Twitter, FB, [insert social site here]. A little relevance never hurt anyone. (Well...uh....hmm...lemme think about that one.)

Meh....he'll never change. lol

i think ur right. maybe its better if we leave him to all the 'yes-people' he said he doesnt find so healthy to be around anymore. after all, we're just normal grounded every-day people living relatively realistic lives. what could he possibly learn from us commoners?

I have to agree with that. It would make the live shows a lot better and 'fresher'. His tours would promote the albums again. No more controversy or peach or all the critics for the 1000th time. Imagine a set with lavaux, sticky like glue, colonized mind, etc played by a tight band drool. ONA tour was in the right direction, many of the songs from TRC were played back then. Now, you almost certainly know that the songs on the new albums will not be played live (the chant of everybody loves me on werchter doesn't count)
