Emancipation (Title track) Appreciation

Simply just a cool song cool Funky as hell with a message music A great song to sum up all the mess that Prince went through with WB wink I've always loved the song-only Prince could've made such madness funky! I love it and the whole cd-great work razz

"I had 2 have double everything" - I like the honesty and self-analysis of that line. Musically it didn't grab me right away, kind of robotic sounding. After I saw a performance at the Brit awards I started to dig it more. Cool track, solid bassline. Nice way to close the album. Not an anthem, not a deep message, just a cool track.

Musically it's cold, dry, and not that interesting. The chorus is forgettable. However, a lot of the lyrics are telling, and one of those moments where Prince goes a little deeper in his personal drama to pull out a song.

Ever since I was a little baby
I had 2 have double everything
When they tell me that's enough
That's when I wanna fill my cup
2 the top, Johnny, hear me sing

CHORUS:
Emancipation - free 2 do what I wanna
Emancipation - see U in the purple rain
Emancipation - free 2 do what I wanna
Emancipation - break the chain, break the chain

Ever since that Eve did unto Adam, alright
What somebody been sho'nuff doin' 2 me (Watch it!)
I've been tryin' 2 break the chain
Get my little ass out the game
I'd rather sing with a bit more harmony, oh

CHORUS

Johnny please, huh, when I was on my knees
My back was broken and my spirit ill at ease
And now it seems just like the autumn leaves
Your money's turned from green 2 brown and now U best believe

CHORUS

(Emancipation) {repeat in BG}
Break the chain, oh yeah
Well, sho'nuff
See U in the purple rain
Emancipation - free 2 do what I wanna
Break the.. break the.. break the chain!

Hey!
Alright!
Hey! {x4}

Emancipation
Free - don't think I ain't!

I think this could have been an immensely fantastic track if it had been produced like say "Make Your Mama Happy". Rocking acoustic drums and real horns.

As it is, I like the funky bass line and think it is a good song, that along with many of it's brothers and sisters on Emancipation cuold have been lifted to heavenly status had it not been so poorly produced.

It's terrible. You'd think the title track to "the album he was born to make" would have a little more substance to it. I'd rather have a 3-minute extension to "The Love We Make". It's such a letdown... Three hours of buildup for what's basically a slow version of "We Gets Up"?

Meh.
