I'm not finished lol

I mean wasn't the OP like 2 yrs old when Prince was at his best in 84? I and so many others were blessed to be old enough to witness the magic when it happened cool I think it's so disrespectful to basically shit on our experiences eek Folks that experienced Prince in the late 70's, 80's and early 90's saw the genius that is truly Prince. I am 38 dammitt and I am still a Prince fan which is more than I can say for these artist and their fans today eek After 2 cd's them bitches are history! I think young Prince would've told you to to kiss his sexy motherfucking ass lol How's that for young?

Listen, my youngest daughter is a mama now and only now does she understand a lot of shit i said to her and her brother growing up. It's like that, the younger people on this thread have to grow a little and see something they valued in youth dissipate in quality. These youngsters want to believe Prince is giving it to them so they can feel good about not being there, so they take shots at the 38's and 42's on this website to avoid challenging the oldest of us all! Prince!! who is 52!. Who is understandably not the same guy, he would tell you that!. Back in 1999 Chris Rock did an interview with Prince showed him a clip of 1999 era Prince and asked him point blank "can you beat that guy?" without skipping a beat Prince said "no, that was a bad dude!". Remember 1999 was the first album he made $ from, dude was in the red and WB was wondering what to do with him. We loved him back then and when that shit dropped in 82" it was do or die so you cant tell me he wasnt bringing it. We built this shit, provided the support and longevity to an amazing career so these kids can even participate in such a forum. Without us, and our decrepit old experiences and our thirst for more they wouldnt even be able to get on this ride. Dont let em bother you nurse, the very fact that the thread was even started is validation of every thing i just said.

Dreamshaman,

those look like words from a man who is offended by my remarks. If anything you sound like you are driving a wedge between younger and older fans yourself. I've been a fan since late 80's. Granted I wasn't around during the sweet days of his desputable prime, but you are drawing your own conclusions with what you thought I was implying. Some of the comments I've read on here from older people have been insightful. With you and nurse I sense an air of superiority, with your "if it wasn't for us" attitude.

I think what everyone needs to come to terms with is that prince is getting old. He will never be young and innovative again. And those of us u have been on the journey with him are never going to hear his music with fresh virgin ears again. That must be kept in mind when evaluating his music.

Some of the fans seem to hold Prince in contempt for simply being human and not some supernatural being who will forever produce mind-blowing innovative music. U must let go of your expectations and just enjoy the ride. If u no longer enjoy the ride its not Prince's fault and its not your fault. it is just the nature of things.

What is your fault is if you use your disapointment to attack and browbeat Prince. And take the opportunity of your discontent to belittle his still apparent creativity.

I have to assume that Prince is happy with the music he produces. I have no desire to vent vitiriol at him because I am unhappy with it. The good-hearted find that which they appreciate and praise it. The "evil" hearted find that which they dispise and try to destroy it (even when they claim they love).

We see that kind of mentality in people who harm those they claimed to love (i.e wife-beaters, stalkers) because of some disapointment. Prince famously asked us about "positivity". For many his plea fell on deaf ears.

Someone earlier in this thread said there is something missing in young Prince without the Prince of now and vis versa. This is very true. We are given the oppurtunity to see Prince age as an artist. So many of the talented have died young or burned out. We only have to look at MJ to see this.

Some one tell me who out there could have produced a 3 CD set of new-songs covering many genres 30 years into a career in which they have spit out yearly cds (with sometimes multiple cds) other then prince? That is rare air we are breathing! So many of you are focused on what you don't have that you miss the genunine rare flower in your midst.

Its sad.

Nicely put.

I also wonder if those who are so critical of him have ever done anything creative, themselves. Because I can tell you that the hardest thing in the world is creating something new - saying something a new way, designing something no one's ever seen, developing a whole new sound. Prince has done it - and done it repeatedly, as you say, over 30 years. That's some crazy genius at work there.

If people can't hear it, it's their loss.

We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

There are plenty of people out there making great music these days, you just have to look for it. I'm not suprised that you haven't bothered. Most people don't.

Herein lies a second generalization that usually crops up on these threads -- the implication that old-school Prince fans somehow depend only on him for quality music.

Some of us keep our eyes and ears out for new artists, in addition to having other favorites whose music we've enjoyed for a long time. So, trust and believe, we're still enjoying other artists' quality output.

We just know that Skipper's capable of doing far better. The irony is this: Prince has always acted like his music was the best available and that he'd "developed" the musical palates of his longtime listeners. So, wouldn't it stand -- at least by his measure -- that we'd have sophisticated tastes that blanche at the release of his subpar or more recent offerings?

It would indeed stand to reason that Prince fans would have good taste in other music. Evidence on this board suggests that's not the case at all though, as seen by repeated claims that there isn't any good music being made today, or that Prince's new music is better than everything else out there. Both are absolutley ridiculous notions.

I whole-heartedly agree that Prince is capable of doing better than the music he's made lately though.

Dig this, it's been cool in forever to hate on "new Prince" (whatever that means).

It has always been cool too dig "old Prince" (whatever that means).

As far back as 1985, fans bitched an moaned about Prince's new direction and longed for the classic Mpls Sound. Hell, in 1984 hardcore fans were not cool with the fact that Purple Rain brought him a mass appeal.

I mean, I never thought I'd see nostalgia for New Power Soul, but it happens around here.

If people seriously prefer Tony M. and "Jughead" over the 3121 era, that's fine.

However, I do agree that there is often a serious case of old person "back in my day" mentality going on around here.

Even though it was in the days B.I. (Before Internet), I remember very well the reaction to Around the World In a Day, Parade and Lovesexy. (We won't even discuss Under the Cherry Moon. lol ) With each of those albums, there were huge numbers of people saying, "Oh, my gawd - he's completely lost it. WTF is this shit?"

And you're right - there were definitely long-time fans back in 1984 who were pissed that Purple Rain was popular. They felt Prince had "sold out" and become "mainstream."

There's just no pleasing some folks. I think Prince accepted that a long time ago.

& there in is our answer ...

Peace ... & Stay Funky ...
