The song that holds that title 2 me is "Vavoom". Such a great radio song.

love the song. should have been a hit. indicative of the wilderness radio is in to me. the wide disparity as it relates to who likes the song and who doesn't reflects the near impossible consensus on Prince material. Lotus has some great tracks and so does MPLSound. and whomever things SHOE from PE isn't a great ballad needs their ears cut off. LOL

agreed wink

It would've been a great single. Should've been the first single for Planet Earth. Really good and appealing to a mainstream audience.

But he doesn't get mainstream radio play here in the states. Therefore, FBM was the single choice to Urban AC radio and was a hit.

I know Planet Earth was not a favorite , but The 1 U Wanna C is the best single of the past 6 years (Prince resurgance) that never happened. The song is pure pop with a country twang thrown in. I think Prince could of pulled out his old Muppet Show Country gear and made this a crossover hit ala Darius Rucker. This song is genius and a prime example of Prince's skills to write a perfect pop song that could be played on the radio today. "I got a lotta money ..."

Remember also that b4 and during the Wembley shows it would have got a good spin on the radio...a reference to seeing prince in Wembley is easily made afterall...it's just terrible marketing sense NOT to make it a single....

I love the track. Contrary to some of the opinions expressed, I feel it's one of the better pop songs he's written of late. It's funny how some people seem to forget the ingrediants he has used over the years in his more popular songs, the same ones that many nay-sayers always say that they long for. Many of those ingrediants are present in this track, and the use of slap bass in this type of cut spiced it up nicely... IMO

Now I want it on karaoke, but that's for another thread.

I like this one too...should've been a hit. PE as an album is not fave of mine, but like all Prince albums, there are some true gems. Chelsea Rogers, this, and Somewhere Here on Earth are choice tracks.

I agree with the others that he has so many songs that SHOULD'VE been hits. The one that really stands out for me is Supercute.

"Supercute" would've been very radio friendly, as would have "Vavoom"

I think it would have been a good single.... but if Guitar got proper promotion and airplay I think that would have done well as well... For the urban market FBM was a good choice, but he should have followed that up with Chelsea.

Change it one more time..

Agreed

There were TONS of songs that could have been hits with the right kind of support, TMBGITW was a #1 and I don't think he's released WAY better songs since then. The issue here is radio. Radio doesn't want Prince on the air, they keep saying he "doesn't fit the format". What they mean is Prince and other true talents like him would make the other music they play sound lame, and they're right.

I agree also 100% .........Now that explains why so many people in this org hate the music that Prince makes. He is making real true music of true talent and many prince.org members want to hear something lame.
Go figure.

I see what you mean, but perhaps releasing a mainstream oriented single is a way to get mainstream radio play and a wider audience.

Maybe so. The problem would be to get mainstream/ac radio to play a new Prince song.

Well, he has to go sit down and talk with all the Ryan Seacrests on the radio like he does with the Tom Joyners whenever he's serious about selling records. Hey, if Bon Jovi can still get radio play with mediocre songs, Prince can...

Change it one more time..

I like it and I agree that it was potentially commercially strong...

But the problem is that its basically a carbon copy of a style that Prince has used many times in the past, often more successfully (I Could Never Take The Place of Your Man, for instance...)

That said, I still enjoy it.

The 1 U Wanna C is weak, and sounds like a Jeff Lynne song on a bad day. The production is a little too bombastic.

Jeff Lynne, don't get me wrong, one of my heroes - the lead singer, writer and producer from Electric Light Orchestra,

but Prince's The 1 U Wanna C sounds like a bad ELO song from 1986, from the last real ELO album Balance Of Power.

I don't think The 1 U Wanna C would have had any commercial hit potential for Prince.

I have heard this song played on danish radio a few times, I guess there was a promo single release to radio only.

But imo. Future Baby Mama would had been a much stronger single release, with a steamy sexy video. That did not happen.... damn. But at least this song gave Prince an american Grammy.

The 1 U Wanna C - about 6/10 imo.

I think it's a pop masterpiece but in a retro conservative way by Prince standards. I think he should have sold this to a pickup truck commercial and made some $$$

It's a hit type composition in the same way that "Hello Goodbye" from Paul McCartney was a hit and well made pop song for The Beatles, but made some eyes roll (even within the Beatles) because it was not pushing their established frontier. In my opinion.

Indeed. I would've sat up and paid attention to a commercial playing that song. Thanks ufoclub for a different perspective to that poppy gem.
