I do too - and it wasnt done that well (I recall them abruptly cutting off live performance footage in to go to commercials - total disregard for the music). Now there is nothing on BET about jazz - and probably wont be any time soon.

Man I'm only going to watch Prince and after that, I'm changing the God-damn channel. Overall, fuck BET and it's coon fest.

I am old enough to know the difference between what Don Cornelius did and what BET has done - and it is not the same. BET has always been a disappointment to educated blacks who wanted a real black television network with some consistent high quality programming. I remember going to college with Ed Gordon and watching him ascend to the closet thing to a real black news achor for a black-owned media outlet - but that has given way to reality shows which act as how-to-be-ghetto guides and any other programming that black people can sing and dance to while watching. It is all fun entertainment and that is fine - I would simply like to see something else that would educate adn broaden the black perspective as it comes into our hoseholds for hours each adn every day. Just how many Micheal Jackson tributes and sitcom reruns can we watch and what intellectual or cultural enrichment are we getting from a steady diet of that?

The Centric Award is bascially the jazz award. The channel only reflects whats going on today. Blame your peers or elders for there not being any educational show PERIOD. Good Times, stereotypical programming that can offer some detrimental effescts on youth? sounds like a personal problem because we do not have that issue around here. When you think about BET was about having fun and not so uptight. Like I say all the time if you dont like it turn the other cheek and stop complaining. Start your own network because plenty of people like it.

Well I suppose that will have to do in place of an intelligent retort. The cycnical response "start your own network" sounds good to the unenlightened and those who feel a need to condemn those with the instestinal fortitude to speak on the Emporer's new clothes - but, at the end of the day, means almost nothing. Most people with any real social consciousness today - especially in regards to black culture - can not ignore the stereotypical images of blacks perpetuated by reruns of Good Times and Sanford and Son as socially and psychologically detrimental to the audience. In 2010, its buffoonery - plain and simple - not unlike modern day minstrels of the new black reality shows and sitcoms. What is distressing is the lack of outrage - an obviously sad product of the steady digression of neglected black cultural values.

"Peers and elders"? Who the hell is that? BET is only slightly worse than it was when black people owned it. I saw BET begin in 1980. While Viacom is probably wise enough to have some black people managing various parts of the network, there is no excuse for its lack of development and redeeming social value to the black community. If it were a restuarant, it would only have dessert and leftovers on the menu. Black people deserve more than that - or at least I like to think so. There was a time we could turn to one of our own and, at the very least, attempt to open a dialgoue about this void in programming. That day is gone now. TVOne could position itself to be the black successor - perhaps, but then again, perhaps not.

At the very least, there are some conflicting opinions on this matter. I, for one, don't like to make excuses or give passes on things like this. Reality is often harsh when black folks turn down the jams and take a hard, long look at the numbers, the history, outside perceptions, and - most importantly - the mirror.

You are right - I was surprised to hear a few young punks say they came to see him. THey seem to think he is performing. Perhaps they know something - but chances are they are making uningormed assumptions.
