cool Very cool! I just read on Esperanza Spalding's blog that she'll be taking part in a Prince tribute. But Alicia, Janelle, Patti, and Chaka is cooler. Nice to see credible, talented artists paying homage to my hero and not one of these shitty-ass rappers or pop tarts.

"REAL MUSIC BY REAL MUSICIANS" - Prince

Esperanza definitely holds her own...there are no weak links in the tribute

Well it's been confirmed by Chaka herself just now that she is personally presenting the award to Prince:

"On my way from Amsterdam to present my brother Prince with his BET Liftime Achievement Award. Watch tonight on BET at 8 pm"

This might be a cool tribute after all! cool

BET Awards have a category for R&B adn Hip Hop - why no jazz category? That is the only original American music genre and it was created by blacks. It proceeded R&B and hip hop. This is why BET has never really succeeded in cultivating or even maintaining any real cultural value and history for African americans in my opinion. Neither has TV One.

BET does have a jazz award recheck your facts. TV One & BET has done many good things if you actually watch it instead of going by one or two shows and what other people say "BET has never really succeeded in cultivating or even maintaining any real cultural value and history for African americans?" you must be white and really don't know what you are talking about. BET taught a lot of us that owning your own can be possible like Don Cornelius and Soul Train

Where is the jazz nominees on the 2010 BET Award website? It is reasonable to believe there are none of they are not listed like hip hop and R&B. That BET virtual (meaning just on the web) awards for jazz is secondary and irrelevant as are so many awards that do not get televised. Black people dont support jazz as much as white people right now and part of is because it doesnt get the exppsure that it should from black media (and I am referring to real straight ahead classical jazz (such as Wynton Marsalis - a past virtual BET award winner); not "smooth" jazz - which is just R&B with no lyrics.

I am old enough to know the difference between what Don Cornelius did and what BET has done - and it is not the same. BET has always been a disappointment to educated blacks who wanted a real black television network with some consistent high quality programming. Bringign Tavis Smiley and a few of the political talk shows on the air was good - but they have always been mired with hours andhours of degenerative hip hop videos and old sitcoms like Good Times which do little to enlighten or educate the black community today. In fact, such stereotypical progamming can offer some detrimental effects - especially on young blacks - in my opinion. I know several educated black people whio do not allow their children to watch it for this reason. Considering the fact that BET is no longer owned by black people, an increase in quality, responsible and socially beneficial programming is unlikely. They will continue to cater to what they consider to be thelowest common denominator in order to remain solvent. This would not distress me if there was an intelligent alternative for black TV programming. This kind of network programming is marginal at its best and flat out ridiculus at its worst when it comes to serving the target demogrpahics with something of redeeming value. Does BET even have a serious daily news program? I remember going to college with Ed Gordon and watching him ascend to the closet thing to a real black news achor for a black-owned media outlet - but that has given way to reality shows which act as how-to-be-ghetto guides and any other programming that black people can sing and dance to while watching. It is all fun entertainment and that is fine - I would simply like to see something else that would educate adn broaden the black perspective as it comes into our hoseholds for hours each adn every day. Just how many Micheal Jackson tributes and sitcom reruns can we watch and what intellectual or cultural enrichment are we getting from a steady diet of that?

I actually dont want him to I cant beleive I am saying that). I dont recall other legands actually performing on the night that other are performing in their honor. I want to watch Prince sit in the front row (they shoud be in a venue which has a seperate VIP box up off the floor) and braciously take his long overdue praise like a true living legend.

On those other award shows, the honree sits back like the king or queen holding court and everyone else does the work. With that said, it is hard to believe Prince wouldnt take the chance to blow away every other "artist" in the house and walk off with an award that most of them should never last long enough to see in theor careers.

The Centric Award is bascially the jazz award. The channel only reflects whats going on today. Blame your peers or elders for there not being any educational show PERIOD. Good Times, stereotypical programming that can offer some detrimental effescts on youth? sounds like a personal problem because we do not have that issue around here. When you think about BET was about having fun and not so uptight. Like I say all the time if you dont like it turn the other cheek and stop complaining. Start your own network because plenty of people like it.

Okay guys. Here's the listing for awards that will be given out tonight. When I clicked on the "Centric Awards" no jazz artist was listed, but Sade, Melanie Fiona, Monica, Chrisette Michelle, are some of the candidates. Yes, it would be nice for some jazz artists to be recognized at the BET Awards. Maybe if it is demanded, it will happen down the road. They do, however, have a category for "Best international act", which I'm not sure was always part of that category.

About 2 and a half hours (3 hours if CP time as usual) of sorriness that passes for black music today is what we will have to make it through before we get to Prince. I have dreaded it for thwe last week.
