isn't all innovation some type of mixing up of what came before?

No, not if you look up the meaning of innovation, but you are free to believe what you like.

1-Lower. I love Prince, but Barry White can make your pelvis move just by going "ooooooh baby baby babyyyyyy..." Or maybe that's just my horny self.
2- Also higher. Prince....come on. Stevie has churned out the hits that are wedding essentials. Prince is wedding-worthy also, but Stevie and Fingertips won me over....
3-Higher. Prince can play his butt off, but Rick James has that whole...cool, nasty funk thing going on. That, and it makes my toes curl when he sings about juicy things.
4-Higher. Prince has that deeper soul. The Bee Gees are soft and airy. Summer romance type music thing.
5-Neutral. I haven't heard enough Bowie to make that call.
6-Same for this one. Neutral.
7-THIS IS HARD!! I love me some Beatles. I could listen to "come together" all night long. (I actually did for about 15 hours straight until my dad begged me to plug in headphones.) Lower. I just can't bring myself to deny the cool factor of these two men against Princey.

Barry White? didn't he totally rip Issac Hayes?
As good as Key Of Life is, I never got into Innervisions or Talking Book.
Rick James? Not even in the same building as Prince.
Never heard a Bee Gee's album. Doubt it.
Despite Bowie's innovation and the prolific 70s output he hasn't as many top songs.
Don't get Sly all that much, picky when it comes to funk.
I'm not sure about Lennon & McCartney, though if my ranking is purely based on preference with no claims to objectivity then Prince obliterates them.

You're too kind Edmund. I'd call them idiots, but of course as the OP said, no wrong answers. Still any other music forum would call idiots. [Edited 6/14/10 16:53pm]

Remember, everyone is entitled to their strong opinions. And trust, I've heard far more negative opinions about Lennon/McCartney than these.

that's amazing to me, and closed minded imho.

You gotta be kidding me! Prince is the greatest musician of all time! It doesn't matter who's on that list, Prince will always rank higher

I think that the Beatles are superior, because of the RubberSoul/Revolver/Sgt.Peppers/1967Singles era; NOBODY will be able to top that...
But if we think about this objectively:
The Purple Rain soundtrack is better than the A Hard Day's Night/Help! soundtracks
Parade (if we see it as an experimental/psychodelic record) is not necessarily worse than Magical Mystery Tour or half of Sgt.Peppers
SOTT is not necessarily worse than The Beatles White Album (in fact, I think is better)
Think about it | |

Have done. Dismissed outright as merely ramblings from a fam with the ability to type in English, not Princebonics, so kudos. Meanwhile i'm off to bed to have some sex, cause Prince really isn't worthy of all this thought.

Prince higher than all. Stevie and Beatles comes closest.
I believe the Beatles are over-rated. Most of their early stuff was nursery rhyme standard. They didn't hit their mark until they started getting experimental and psychedelic-Rubber Soul/Revolver/Sgt Peppers. But I believe that Prince equals this period Purple Rain/Around the World/Parade/Sign and then there are classic albums such as Dirty Mind/1999/Lovesexy/Gold/Rainbow Children (of course this list is subject to personal preference) as well as popular albums such as Controversy/Batman/D&P etc...

Marrk, A bit rich when MJ was really just a performer like Elvis. I can never consider MJ a musician or artist and it is not about snobbery.

No one, and I repeat NO ONE had a larger impact on music, pop culture and artistry than the Beatles.
As much as I love Prince, to say otherwise is silly. She has robes and she has monkeys, lazy diamond studded flunkies....

Rolling Stone's Top 100 Artist of All Time
1. The Beatles 2. Bob Dylan 3. Elvis Presley 4. The Rolling Stones 5. Chuck Berry 6. Jimi Hendrix 7. James Brown 8. Little Richard 9. Aretha Franklin 10. Ray Charles 11. Bob Marley 12. The Beach Boys 13. Buddy Holly 14. Led Zeppelin 15. Stevie Wonder 16. Sam Cooke 17. Muddy Waters 18. Marvin Gaye 19. Velvet Underground 20. Bo Diddley 21. Otis Redding 22. U2 23. Bruce Springsteen 24. Jerry Lee Lewis 25. Fats Domino 26. The Ramones 27. Nirvana 28. Prince
While I don't agree with all of this, I understand their justification in ranking most of these folks higher than Prince--except for Springsteen, U2, the Ramones and Nirvana.
All others...a strong case can be made in their favor. She has robes and she has monkeys, lazy diamond studded flunkies....

If you consider what he did with the Time, Sheila, Vanity, etc. and add that to the bootlegs on top of his official albums he compares favorably with any artist. It's just a matter of taste. The Beatles and Stevie are the only ones here that I had to think hard about and I didn't really discover the Beatles until about 5 years ago so they aren't in my musical DNA like Stevie and Prince.

Well as the thread isn't about who had the largest impact on music, pop culture and artistry, and is about whether or not we as individuals rank Prince higher or lower than the named artists...
I'd have to say that for me, in my opinion, Prince outranks them all. Why? Well, Prince has more songs I'd prefer to listen to than the others combined. I've not heard an album by any of the others where I can just listen all the way through without skipping, especially the Beatles, never liked them much. Prince has several albums I can happily listen to without any tracks being skipped.
That's not to say that the others haven't had a great impact and produced some great tracks, they have. It's just that I prefer to listen to Prince, so for me that can only mean he's ranked higher than the rest. RIP

Prince is the most profound Sonic Manipulation Engineer on the list. Of the modern age. He honestly cannot be compared with the others. Matter of fact, they'd more than likely tell you the same. Like others on this site, I feel as if Prince has either wasted talent in recent years or has not shared his best material.... Nevertheless, Prince may be the 1st of his kind, a category of 1, the Super Master class musician with the subtle style to fuse multiple genres, effortlessly & seamlessly. Prince is simply in a far more complex category than all the other artists named, IMO....

1. Prince is rank higher OR lower than Barry White? ________
Higher.
Although Barry was excellent in string arrangement, his rhythm section is no match of Prince's.
2. Prince is rank higher OR lower than Stevie Wonder? ________
Lower.
Prince is better than Stevie on drum kits & drum maching programming. Prince definitely rock harder than Stevie. But on keyboard synthesizers, Stevie is damn nearly a god!
3. Prince is rank higher OR lower than Rick James? ________
Higher.
If this was only about The Funk, Rick has won many battles against Prince. But after the release of the albums 1999 & Purple Rain, Prince won the war and never look back.
4. Prince is rank higher OR lower than The Bee Gees? _______
Higher
Saturday Night Fever sold a lot more copies than Purple Rain. But Purple Rain (like 1999) had been far more influencial and definitely been beat-bitten more often by later artists than anything the Gibbs created. Plus. Prince's musical era is at least 3 times as long as The Bee Gees.
5. Prince is rank higher OR lower than David Bowie? _______
Higher.
This is a close call within the creative arts department. Live shows from both artists are legendary within the pages of music history. As for lastly impressions, David can claim Madonna & Lady Gaga as his main students. But Prince can claim OutKast, The Neptunes, Private, Daft Punk, Basemast Jaxx, Egyptian Lover, and damn nearly every would be hip-hop producer/beatmaker that take synths & drum machines for granted.
6. Prince is rank higher OR lower than Sly Stone? _______
Higher.
Prince took most of Sly's ideas to a higher level. Simple as that.
7. Prince is rank higher OR lower than Lennon/McCartney? _______
Lower.
As separate individuals, John Lennon is a better choice than Paul McCartney in match up against Prince in terms of musicianship, despite that Prince would still defeat John down the strech in any live show. As a songwriter duo, no one (not even Prince) can touch the magic OR success of Lennon McCartney.
