It is the single version, which I enjoy better.

dreadful video. Cheap, tacky & embarassing. Compare to Jill Jones' Mia Bocca video from slightly earlier to see a floaty-word video done well.

I love that video for some reason. Sure, it's cheesily put together, but it's as fun as the song. I'll take this video over big-budget yawn-fests like Te Amo Corazon and Chocolate Box any day.

If prince.org were to be made idiot proof, someone would just invent a better idiot.

It might look like it was made 10 years earlier than it was, but it's still a great video.

I agree.I like the "Alphabet St" video because of its playful simplicity. It reminds me of those early 80s videos that artists and bands made before they were given big budgets for videos.

I agree with this, its cheap hurried quality is what makes it good.

The video looks like it was shot at a Minneapolis TV station in front of the weather man's green screen.

Weather man: "We'll get some of that Gulf Stream hot air pushing north, and temperatures will rise."

Prince: "NO!"

In fact, the guy that shot the video said that it was very cheaply done in a warehouse or something against a blue screen late at night. The interview was just posted here recently. In fact, I think it was the guy himself that responded to the thread.

Here ya go: http://prince.org/msg/7/326027 See reply #77 from "mbarnard". That's the guy who shot the video.

Thanks for the link Ernest.

I produced the ALPHABET STREET video. Prince himself directed it.

The car was his dad's car, he was the original owner and gave it to Prince. In spite of the lyrics, it was really a 1964 Thunderbird. For Christmas 1988, I gave Prince a sign declaring "T-BIRD PARKING ONLY!" for his garage for that car. After I moved to Los Angeles, I ran into Prince at Mr. Goodbar in Beverly Hills in 1990, where I found out he had a small accident on wintry snow-covered Chanhassen streets and damaged, maybe destroyed, the T-bird.

We shot ALPHABET STREET in Prince's cavernous PAISLEY PARK STUDIOS sound stage in Chanhassen. Not in front of a green screen, just in the center of the huge stage with the white cyc hanging in the distant background.

Prince called on Sunday afternoon to see if we could put together a video production shoot for that evening. We did, using four professional video cameras (at that time, "professional" meant cameras with 2/3" tubes, shooting on 3/4" U-matic cassettes--although 1" Type C reel-to-reel would have been preferred).

Warner Bros. was not impressed with Prince's "shot in a basement" video (their description, which Prince was delighted to tell me as soon as he could), and dispatched Tim Clawson from Propaganda Films to come to Minneapolis to shoot additional 35mm film footage of Cat doing her rap to add to the video.

Tim and I went to Williams Pub in Uptown to scout it as a location for the additional 35mm film shoot. We then retreated (literally--as soon as word got out what we were doing there, we were chased by girls) to the Ediner diner in Calhoun Square to discuss the project. (The old Ediner space on the second floor is now a bar--at least, it was when I was in Minneapolis this past July.) Tim and I decided that it would not be practical to add a 35mm film section to the video that we had already shot, and Prince didn't really want to do it anyway.

So, ALPHABET STREET ended up being Prince's personal vision for a video for that song. In fact, he closed the set during the shoot so it was just him, me, the girls, and the camera operators. It's his work.

I LOVE the Alphabet Street video! lol

I remember when I read per Nelson's book, he seemed to imply that the video was a hasty hack job and artistic compremise.

But I love everything about the video--the cheesy effects, the quirky song, the polkadotted shirt, the extremely gay hair tossing (admit it, Diana Ross might as well have been Telly Sivalis compared to that sexiness), the vanity shots of him slowly blinking at the camera.... GOD, I just love EVERYTHING about the video.

Prince seems to work best when the video is low budget and the entertainment factor relies on his dancing or sheer silliness. I know the Gett Off video was filmed by the same director as the Kiss video, but the stripped down Kiss video is just superior.

But I digress. The Alphabet Street Video is like a really fun upbeat, slutty raver chick who can dance all night long. Videos like Black Sweat are like that Joran Vander Sloot fella...guilty of showing up in the wrong place, doing bad things, and then disappearing with swiftness.

I don't believe that is correct. Randee St. Nicholas directed "Gett Off". Rebecca Blake directed "Kiss".

The video was shot by Jean-Baptiste Mondino, a french photographer and art director in advertisement, who also worked with Madonna and J.P. Gaultier...

I love, it's pure fun and mirrors the musics perfectly.

Mondino said that no video could show the genius of Prince music cool

Mondino is a great artist, his photography is very good.

I think he also shot the video for Manchild, by Nenah Cherry.

I love the Alphabet St. video for many reasons, one of which is that video is forever associated in my mind with the fact that I met him the day it premiered on MTV. smile
