Per Nilsen missed a lot of stuff! There are so many songs that are not in our knowledge. And so many details to his professional activities. I've been witness to so many aftershows and afterparties and find that documentation of those night or days is probably about 25% correct and missing many details. This song does sound like a revamp of an old Vanity 6 song which might have translated to an experiment in giving the Time a beach pop sound like Shake.

Exactly...little did we know before Crystal Ball was relased song like "Cloreen Bacon Skin" "Goodbye" "Make Your Mama Happy" even exsisted.

Goodbye was circulating before CB was released.

Just sayin', I agree with your point. smile

Was it? Because there was never any documentation in Prince: A Documentary about the song....

I think that was out before the song was (widely) circulating. Recorded in 1991, but it was pulled out for possible inclusion on Emancipation (IIRC), since it was usually placed along side all the other Emancipation out-takes on bootlegs, I Am The DJ, Feel Good, 2020 etc.

Just because he wrote a song called Hot Summer back then doesn't mean it's the same song.

there was never any documentation in Prince: A Documentary

That book is absolutely obsolete. Both 90 and 93 editions.

The Uptown team righted many wrongs on that surveys and, especially, added A LOT of new info on the subsequent volumes Days Of Wild, Turn It Up and The Vault.

One word sums the track up: vap·id (v p d, v p d). adj. 1. Lacking liveliness, animation, or interest; dull: vapid conversation. 2. Lacking taste, zest, or flavor; flat

This is EXACTLY why I'm afraid of Prince's involvement in the new Time album. It sounds to me like it was meant for The Time at some point. I haven't heard the original but the lyrics sound like they have undergone a Jehovah's Witness friendly rewrite and the track has no excitement or energy left. I'll be damned if I'm going to listen to it twice, but the part about people being equal and all deserving a pound is just bad. The whole thing makes you wonder how he might take the scissors to "Manic Monday". Shelby sounds fantastic, but she's sprinkling sugar on sht with this song.

Vapid is a good description. As is lobotomised, if this really is an updated Time out-take.

it's definitely vapid. there's not much to it and very little effort was put into it. it's alright for what it is, if it's a throwaway thing to promote an upcoming european tour and isn't intended for any kind of real release.

even if it's a lower-tier track from an album given away as a preview because it fits the season, then it's still okay. if it's the lead single and focal point for kicking off promotion for an album, then something has gone drastically wrong and a serious re-think is in order.

I hear you. Compare the original version of old friend to the released version. BIG differance. Almost sounds like Prince is Reminecent about the old classic he wrote. Does not sound as sincere as he did in the original. Changing a few lines of a song can alter the entire song. Changing the mood it was originally sung can do the same.

Moonbeam levels - if he re recorded this song, it would not be the same song we love. And it's a wonder why he doesn't release material like that. As that is certainly a classic.

I think what Per and the staff did were great. But ultimately it's the ideas that move you foward. It's also the connections. Networking etc. It's having someone here in the USA, who is expanding the borders. Per lost this when certain people who worked with him left.

I think Per did his best from over seas in talking to people. But obvioulsy a lot of material was missed. Perhaps there is someone out there who has the time to interview people and get more info. I am concerned about unreleased music by Prince becase I do feel he has some gems in the vault that he has forgotten about or doesn't even know they exist. I am concerned about there condition and the need to transfer the tapes. Is it my music? Well to some extent since Prince is a household names it belongs to history. I just wish Prince would at least transfer the tapes (all of them not a select few), write a will as to what happens to the tapes if something happens to him, and has an Prince archivist document all the tapes.

I mean he should be thinking about this. His unreleased music will ultimately be and extension of his current legacy.

I dont mean to be a debby downer..(im a dude anyways) but im a lil shocked to see ernest with a FB page glorifying Prince, after all the crap he writes here and the negativity he's thrown Prince's way...im not opposed..just shocked at the hypocrisy and irony. is someone jumping on the Prince bandwagon this "hot summer"?

Erm. Ernest is a Prince fan.

I fail to see why being a Prince fan requires us to like everything Prince has put out, nor why we should refrain from critiquing it, even if it veers towards lambasting material (or behaviors). Shit is shit. Genius is genius. A fan should be able to call the cards as he sees fit. shrug

i agree. not everything the beatles did was brilliant. i hate revolution #9 and mr moonlight. the rolling stones haven't put out anything memorable in 10 years or longer, yet I still consider myself an ardent fan.

Ernest is more of a prince fan than most here.

Don't get me wrong. Sometimes I just want to reach out and tell Ernest to turn his frown..upside down.

But I think people misunderstand him sometimes. He's a fan.

If you dislike the guy bad enough to hijack a thread and namecall him, why would you bother to look him up on FB?

eek

Anyway, back to the thread...

If this is a Time outtake... apart from the organ work lifted from 'Shake', it just doesn't sound like their sort of stuff lyrically. Can anyone else hear Morris singing this? Still, this is Prince world, stranger things have happened.

First of all I never said "I didn't like the guy" as u put it..nor did I call him any names..like u said I did...u need to calm down son. I ve seen u talk more shyt towards Ernest than anyone anyhow. And I went to his FB page because he has a link to it on his signature, so get your facts straight before u come at me...my facts are straight...everyone knows how negative Ernest can be about Prince. What are u..his newly appointed attorney? geez get some real-life friends.
