Maxwell v. Prince

Not really a "versus" - - I saw Maxwell perform last night in LA. He's definitely a great performer, but he basically reminded me of a taller, more "manly" Prince, which resulted in a conier performance -- minus much of the talent and versatility. I remember saying to myself often, "I've seen Prince to this so much more convincingly and better 15 years ago." Do others agree or think I'm just delusional and need to be more open minded to other artists?

No idea what "conier" is, at all.

It's such old hat, and narrow-minded, that people compare Prince to Maxwell or vice versa. They're 15 years apart in age, which makes them almost a generation apart. Maxwell is obviously influenced by Prince, as he is a dozen other artists. The comparison is just a rerun at this point. Maxwell isn't trying to be Prince, imitate him or mimick him. In fact, Prince could learn a few things from Maxwell these days in how to write a song that makes the girls wet and the boys lick it up.

"conier" is a typo for "cornier." Apologize for the editing. I'd disagree that it's obvious Maxwell is influenced by a "dozen other artists" to the same extent he is influenced by Prince. Prince's music/performance style seems to be much more dominant in Maxwell than that of other artists. I get your point though.

Then you haven't listened to a lot of other artists. There's a lot more to Maxwell than a major Prince-only influence.

I did't make it past the "...taller, more "manly" Prince..." whofarted and I still agree with you. shrug

I knew from the start that I loved you with all my heart.

I have to agree with Ernest here....Maxwell has many influences and has discussed them. His style of R & B is closer the smoother 80's sounds when signing was a seduction.

I happen to love Maxwell but never thought to compare him to Prince. He is influenced but not so much that he reminds me of him.

But that is just me.

I think Prince has influenced many artists. I'm sure that Prince has had some influence on Maxwell, as other artist have.

Sidebar: Was Jill Scott performing with Maxwell, and if so...how was it?

Although I'm your biggest fan...I'm also your biggest critic. Can you deal with that?

I agree with U. When I saw maxwell live. He channels Prince moves so much it kind of disgust me. He crawls across the stage and and jumps and does the splits just like Prince use to do. But not better. But U can tell he studied Prince's perfomances. But his voice is real kool though..

Okay first off, ya gotta learn how to quote someone on here.

2) it's "disgusted". "Discussed" is the past tense of having talked about something.

3) Prince wasn't the first, or last, to jump, crawl or otherwise abuse themselves on/with/around the stage.

4) it's not about being "better" than Prince; it's about better one's self. Maxwell wants to rise above whatever his previous project was, ya see.

5) "you can tell", he's influenced by a lot of people. Jackie Wilson, Marvin Gaye, Al Green, Smokey Robinson - all of those cats have a strong presence in Maxwell's music and performance. Prince is just one little part of it all, not the main thrust of Maxwell's act. You guys need to go watch some Jackie Wilson, and Marvin Gaye, and Al Green, and Smokey videos. Those cats are the ones all the funksters looked up to, and cats like Maxwell are still looking back to that time as inspiration. Hell, look at Maxwell's "Fistful of Tears" video. Doesn't look like a Prince video. It looks like a segment of the Ed Sullivan Show!

But I ain't mad at ya.

U right! I write real fast and don't proof read it sometimes. But all that other crap I know about. U don't have to school me on artist. I've studied a lot of artist performances. I have seen each and every artist U named live performances in person or on dvd. So i'm aware of how they perform.

I still stick by my statement that Maxwell studies & copies Prince's performance style. Especially in his early tours. Now he is coming into his own. But its still there.

Not sure why all of the sarcasm is even necessary. People are stating thier opinons. No one's opinion is more valid or insightful than anyone else who has witnessed Maxwell perform. Can't understand why some folks feel the need to be obnoxious all of the time. It's rather childish.

Two different perfomers who each offer something wonderful-love them both. I think it's unfair to Compare Maxwell to Prince 15 yrs ago-the man does his own thing and he does it well.

Although I'm a fan of both, I've never understood the comparisons between them that I've consistently heard over the years. They're a world apart in my eyes - Maxwell having a straight-up soul man type of vibe, while Prince is far more eclectic.

Prince doesn't have a copyright on falsetto or sexy performances, and everybody takes from past artists.

Bzzt, wrong. You totally dismiss any talent Maxwell has (which is a LOT) because you accuse him of having to look to another singer's style to copy. What a bullshit statement. It's like saying anyone who grows a 5 o'clock shadow couldn't come up with their own facial hair ideas so they're just copying George Michael. It's nonsense.

Prince is a brand, Maxwell is a genre of music, artists who can brand themselves of a certain look, mystique, style, quality etc will always be more successful, if you're looked at as just another artist singing a certain genre of music, you will forever be in a hole, it not necessarily a bad thing, but its the difference in being super successful or maintainable

I understand your point but I don't think his ego will allow this. Funny thing is that I've recently been going back to Musicology and 3121, and I must say, I actually like some of the cuts on those CD's. I think Prince has matured. He will never go back to being the same artist that he was when Purple Rain was the mega hit that it was. I mean even Michael Jackson began to fissle out musically, and he worked with multiple producers. It's just what happens to almost all artists. I can't think of any artist who lived to grow old, and had hits to the grave.

That's exactly right. He has that Marvin Gaye swag down.

Just a little advice to the OP, never compare other artists to your fave, they will always lose, trust me lol P is in a league of his own, so just try to enjoy other artists and their music seperately. You'd be surprised at how much you can enjoy it when you keep them in their lane.
