Something Strange.
I love this version of Somethin in the Water. Can anyone give info on this recording. Are there other songs. Thx Peace. Prince did an interview with a woman at Record World. They talked about whatever, then he asked her: "Does your pubic hair go up to your navel?" At that moment, we thought maybe we shouldn't encourage him to do interviews.

I still can't believe Prince never released this as a DVD.. A few hundred thousand could of been sold in the UK with the right publicity... Makes me think there was something thought to be wrong with these shows? Keenmeister

I don't have that particular one, but here's the rundown from DigitalGarden and a synopsis from TheDataBank:

COMMENT This video recording differs from all others circulating as it is filmed from the large overhead screens in the arena. Filmed from the upper tier we get an impressive, (mainly) unobstructed view of the screen and as the recording is of the screen there are many close, clear shots which simply would not be possible if the person recording had attempted to film the stage itself (as with the other London 2007 recordings). The vast array of angles and close-ups is obviously a major positive here, however there are many problems which demote this release to a VG and make for slightly frustrating viewing.
Throughout the show the camera has a tendency to shake and the focus goes in and out on occasion, however those things I can live with as they don't affect the footage as a whole, although the shaking does occur more frequently than the focus problem. Unfortunately 'Let's Go Crazy' is audio-only with no picture for the 2/3 minutes it is performed, although admittedly that's no big deal when it's a tiny fraction of the 110 minutes running length.
My main concern over this recording is the lighting which is really what makes this VG at best. When the houselights are on, it's almost impossible to see the large screens and for a large section of the encore, this is a major problem. Add to that a slightly grainy picture (presumably due to a video recording filming a video recording) and you have something which not everyone will be interested in or get a great deal of enjoyment out of. The great shame is that when this is good, it's exceptionally good and it's never better than the piano segment (itself a stunner with many rarities) with extreme close-ups, sharp picture and great detail - all this is frustrating as the "Super Bowl" segment which follows the piano medley is shaky, unfocused and badly lit. Overall though, the fact 99% has been recorded from the large screens is what this has going in it's favour, and while it has it's share of problems it's really not that bad and certainly is enjoyable and watchable for me.
The audio has been lifted from the O2verload release 'For Your Memories - 21 Nights In London Vol. 17' which is an EX audience recording, and as such there are no audio issues - in fact the audio is superior to the video. Added to the audio being replaces by a better source than the original recordings, the opening "UK Music Hall Of Fame' has been replaced with a superb digital capture from the original broadcast. The release features an inventive intro zooming past various London landmarks before reaching the menu - itself featuring "Memories Of A Geisha" playing in the background - nice attention to detail.
Personally I rate this release simply because it is different to the other London video recordings and shows the show from a whole new angle. It's most definitely got flaws and problems, but when it's good it's very, very good.

COMMENT
My personal favourite mainshow in terms of both recording quality and the content of the show. The recording is sublime and there really is nothing on here I can be at all critical about or deem to be detrimental. The audience are very much in the background, in fact for 90% of the show they are practically inaudible. No sound issues (besides the sound problems onstage), no distortion, not incomplete - nothing. This only misses out on me grading it as an EX+ recording simply because EX+ audience recordings are the absolute pinnacle and are extremely few and far between. That's not to take anything away from this effort though as it may very well be the best recording thus far. Thankfully, the show is every bit as good as the recording and this is really rather special.
The opening '1999' sets the tone perfectly and there are no less than 6 songs from the '1999' album played along with 2 B-sides from the era - like I say, really rather special indeed. 'Satisfied' is really the only slightly "off" period of the entire show due to it being almost 10 minutes long - good, but 'The Rules' section really isn't that funny. Then we come to the piano medley.....ah, the piano medley. At around 14 minutes long it's not the lengthiest of the tour, but the material contained within, along with Prince's vocal delivery is stunning. It ends rather strangely with the marching feet sample from 'Free' before segueing into the "Look at the bargains over here ladies" sample (complete with wedding song) from 'If I Was Your Girlfriend' before the 'We Will Rock You' beat kicks in and the show moves into the performance of the Super Bowl set.
The second half is less impressive, but still superior to most others with 'Chelsea Rogers' getting it's first airing at a main show. 'Play That Funky Music' lasts a mere 50 seconds before Prince ends it abruptly before launching into 'Crazy' with a portion of Kylie's 'Can't Get You Out Of My Head' added for good measure.
The encore sampler set is again not the longest of the tour (this time lasting around 7:30 including 'Raspberry Beret') but it does feature the only (albeit brief) time 'Mountains' was played - all 2 lines of it, along with the less usual sample blast from 'Gett Off (Houstyle)'.
I really can't praise this release enough due to both the recording's excellence and the shows content. The 14 minute piano medley is sheer joy to listen to and the choice of tracks performed makes this release the best of the entire 21 shows - no easy task, and I ran out of superlatives to describe it. A video recording of this show is also available on the 'Monarchy In The UK' DVD release.

I'm awake. I just don't actively seek out audience recordings. They're usually not my thing. If prince.org were to be made idiot proof, someone would just invent a better idiot.

I'm sure we'd all 'prefer' SB recordings but unfortunately it's only a limited number of gigs which surface in this quality.
Anyway, many ONA audience recordings are as good -if not better- as many soundboards from the 80s or even the early 90s (Cabaret Metro 93 comes specially to mind).
Fortunately recording devices get better and better and that really shows on recent gigs (even if the content in itself is far worse than before). [Edited 6/5/10 13:42pm]

I have come to terms with the fact that we will only see a handful of new soundboard recordings again (thank you bootleggers!), but it's really not the quality of the recording that I'm at odds with - you're exactly right about the technological aspects of devices deployed by our Purple Special Ops in the field. I simply cannot stand audience chatter on those types of recordings. In the old days I bought (the word "bought" shows you how long ago we're talking about) a boot that had the taper standing next to some dill-hole with a tambourine. First of all, the taper was an inbred dick-knob to have stood there in the first place while the asshole next to him shook the living fucking shit out of that jingling piece of garbage. Second of all, curse Prince for giving away and selling tambourines at concerts. Third of all, as you can tell... I have yet to let it go .
I know bootleggers today are hard-core and try really hard to get the best possible sound. They think ahead now. They keep up to date on the latest mics and digital recorders. That's great, and I do give a listen now and again to audience boots, but if I hear some cracker in the audience having a chit-chat, it's all over for me. I think back to that sonofabitch with the tambourine... If prince.org were to be made idiot proof, someone would just invent a better idiot.

Sometimes the quality of the performance makes you bear with whatever (at least in my case). Especially if you want to be a completist.
One of the most annoying experiences I had as a listener was a boot (can't remember the concert or the era) on which a jerk spent THE FULL CONCERT BARKING.
Everytime he heard something he liked, he would BARK. So he was barking all the time.
Pity the taper didn't move to another location...
Nowadays, apart from devices being really great, there's a whole culture about recording concerts. That's why recent recordings (bar 'the casual accident') are so great.

What the hell? I'm not really that surprised, though. Every Prince show I've been to has had it's fair share of completely insane audience members. I sat next to two guys that stood up and acted out every song with physical gestures the entire night. It was like they were putting on a show for the deaf. If prince.org were to be made idiot proof, someone would just invent a better idiot.

Well, if they were 'just acting', at least they weren't 'adding' sounds to the performance.
I certainly never understood why people have to act like idiots when they like what they're witnessing. If you DO like it, that's a great reason to concentrate on the performance and forget about the rest. Especially if we talk about a guy like Prince, whose concerts (used to) be worth registering for posterity.
In the case of that guy, you can believe me it's not a way of saying it, he was perfectly imitating the barks of a dog. He sounded like the snare drum trigger on 'La la la, he he hee' but totally out of sync. And TIRESOME to death.
