I know there aren't just European composers of classical music, but they get all the credit. Name someone other than a European who is a classical musician from the classical period.

To my knowledge dseann, there aren't many (if any) classical composers from what you classify as the classical era. I studied music history, so I know that the Medieval, Renaissance, and Baroque eras (all before the late 1700's.) had no known non-European classical composers. The classical era had no real non-European classical composers. All non-European composers came into the spotlight during the late-Romantic early 20th century. Most new, non-European composers are filed under contemporary, 20th century, and 21st century.

There is however, Indian classical music, Arabic classical music, and Japanese classical music, that has also been around as long as European classical music. I would say the reason they are not incorporated in classical repertoire is because of lack of communication between cultures, and perhaps a snobbish attitude towards what would have then been deemed as "indigenous folk music". But yes, you have a point. Hell, the term "classical music" is very much a modern coin-of-phrase because it didn't appear until the 19th century. Before then, the expression didn't exist. But then, this would mean that the term "classical music" needs revision in order to incorporate all other forms of non-European "classical" music.

I took it there because you made it seem like I was ignorant or even snobbish about certain things(where the music in question is concerned). I'm not into classical music because it lacks rhythm and a bumping bass. I wasn't born in the 16/1700's and don't feel their brand of music. I mean I do love the sound of French Horns but only in songs like ... em ... em ... Europe's "The Final Countdown". lol

OMG! I am sooooo sorry if I sounded that way. I was merely saying that I just wanted you to respect other's people's preference to classical music and that it's not a worthless art form. I mean, I respect your opinion. If you don't like it, that's fine. Everyone has their taste and I myself enjoy a good rhythm and heavy bass. I apologize deeply if anything I said offended you or was misconstrued as derogatory. Please forgive me...hug

And yes..."The Final Countdown" is pretty sweet. cool

You don't really have to be an European to enjoy european music !!!! (the Beatles, the Stones, Bowie, Queen...)

You know exactly what I'm talking about. That "classical" mushit period. Do you ever hear anything else but European music when that period is being mentioned?

You're right, classical music is mostly european, but...you don't have to be European to enjoy european music and you don't have to be from the 18th century to enjoy 18th century music...or I wouldn't listen to any of the 50's blues !!!! wink

The greatest musician of all time...yes.

Thanks for the laughs, arguments and overall enjoyment for the last umpteen years. It's time for me to retire from Prince.org and engage in the real world...lol. Above all, I appreciated the talent Prince. You were one of a kind.

Man, you should listen to some Robert Johnson (for instance) !!! Even Prince wanted to make a movie based on his life, which means that his music can't be as bad as you think !!!! wink

Prince is = to Mozart as compared to the type of music that was created at the time they lived and their contribution to it.

back in the day, mozart did commissions and struggled financially. he was buried in a mass grave, a pauper.

musician's these days complain they dont 'get no respect' while they pose at transient award shows, while mozart was treated like an insignificant clown.

despite that, he transcribed the music he literally heard in his head, making not one mistake when he wrote it down, and completely transformed the music of his era.

he battled against the 'establishment' and what they thought music should be, while they sat there in their stuffy little pompous rich suits, kissing the asses of kings and queens, so puffed up in their vanity..

he never received a hundred million dollar record deal, he never had 'fans' chasing him around the country, he never had anything musicians have today, except talent, a pen, and some paper.

to continue to create such brilliant works, under such thankless and harsh conditions, says a lot about what type of musician he really was.

this too shall pass
