thy will be done

i'm not a native american speaker, so i wonder what the phrase "love thy will be done" really means; does it mean that the relationship spoken of, will be fullfilled, or does it on contrary mean it will be abandoned...

Yes, I've always wondered the meaning of the word 'will'.

it is will, as in 'having a strong will'

or is it the meaning 'it will happen'

?????

Exactly. It is an interpretation of the Lord's Prayer. In this case, "Love" is just a euphemism for God or Lord.

We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

It's saying that whatever "love" wants, is what "love" gets. Prince is yielding his own desires to that of Love's desires. He's using love as a Pronoun and a verb, all in one. Love is an action, but it's also a force - something that has desire and purpose and moves on its own. It's like saying "God - your will (desire) be done, not mine".

The phrase is reflective, and lifted from, The Lord's Prayer in the book of Matthew in the Bible.

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name

Thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven

Prince could have used "Love" as another word for "God", since many believe God IS Love, and Love IS God.

There's Prince's version of the song out there as a bootleg, as well as a rock version sung by Sonny T. I love the rock version. I'm not a fan of Martika's released version.

Imagine Love to be a person. So you are saying to that person, whatever you will. In other words, Love directs you, not the other way round. As Kahlil Gibran wrote: "Do not try to alter the course of Love. Love, if it finds you worthy, will alter your course."

I love the prince version

he totally gave away a keeper.

What I find really amazing is all the layered vocals.I mean he must have knew what the entire song was going to sound like before he even recored those individual parts.

Thats the Prince I love.

Fuck the funk - it's time to ditch the worn-out Vegas horns fills, pick up the geee-tar and finally ROCK THE MUTHA-FUCKER!! He hinted at this on Chaos, now it's time to step up and fully DELIVER!!
woot!

Yep, couldn't have said it better; for me this is a quintessential P song that he really should have released himself. The multi layered vocals are beautiful and the lyrics, although religious in nature, are some of P's best ever.

absolute A++ song!
