Yeah, the live version during those 3121 Vegas shows in 2006 were OK. That instrumental may have been the only why I say so and The Twinz wasn't bad. It's still nothing like the 1984 and 1986 live versions.

Does anybody remember how long the live versions were during the tours with The Revolution? I could answer that myself, but not quickly. What made me think to ask that was the original question somebody asked about a 12" version. I remember, clearly, a longer version of this song. I'm wondering if it was from those tours, maybe?

RE: THe GLamorous LIfe and Oliver's House.
It's hard to imagine what these songs would've sounded like WITHOUT Sheila's percussion work. Both of them have very intricate, subtle, but critical cowbell/timbale/cymbal work that she likely overdubbed on the original tracks. Especially as the grooves get going on the longer album versions.
Speaking of the Glamorous Life, it's crazy how it is a Prince song but also that he never did another one like it. It has such a unique beat (I always wondered if he or Sheila programmed the Linn.....listen to that bass drum pattern... no other pop song has it).
The instrumentation is really unique sounding..... clearly the mix of acoustic and synths but it's like Prince used different synth patches than his usual Oberheim ones on PR or 1999 for example.
And Larry Williams' sax took it to another level....yet he never appeared on a P production again.
Even Sheila's later songs with P never re-captured that unique sound of TGL.

Cerebus said: The juxtaposition of the sad and lonely lyrics against the upbeat rhythm and happy sounding "la la la la la la la lalala" is pure Prince genius. I agree!!! I Love love love this song! I remember I listened to it 17 days after me and an ex broke up. The song hit home that day! Lol U can cut off all my fins - But 2 your ways I will not bend
I'll die before I let U tell me how 2 swim And I'll come back again as a dolphin

Now when you talk b-sides 17 Days is at the top of my tree. With it’s elastic bass, shaking tambourines and rain drop melody the song just lays out heartbreak in a way that makes it so attractive and places you in the despair lyrically while musically it offers a glimmer of hope. I know I’m not alone thinking this song would have been a hit as an A-side at the time. The fact it was the b-side to When Doves Cry probably means it got a good airing none the less. "I'm not human I'm a dove, I'm ur conscience. I am love"

17 Days is the song that turned me from a casual Prince fan into a junkie. I love it.
The check. The string he dropped. The Mona Lisa. The musical notes taken out of a hat. The glass. The toy shotgun painting. The things he found. Therefore, everything seen–every object, that is, plus the process of looking at it–is a Duchamp.

I love this song (any version is good for me) but made the mistake of listening to it on the bus on the way to work yesterday back to back with Another Lonely Christmas and I was in tears when I got to work - hard to explain that it was music that left me that way to my work colleagues.

'17 Days' is one of my favorite Prince songs. I love the arrangement and the lyrics are pure master song writer. Prince's best songs are when he keeps it simple. I particularly like the performance from the 1984 birthday show. There's Joy In Expatriation.

Great taste - is one of my ringtones too - i just looped the opening few bars - perfection "I'm not human I'm a dove, I'm ur conscience. I am love"

Interesting take. It seems like the prototypical Prince song, to me. Flange effect on a Linn drum pattern, funky bass, victimized lyrics, great melody.

17 Days is quality. When i have just two cigarettes left in a pack i think of this song.
I'd kill for him to bring something only half as good these days. And some more cigs.

17 Days is a great song. I miss the days when Prince would throw us a bone with really inspired b-sides like 17 Days, Another Lonely Christmas, She's Always In My Hair, How Come U Don't Call Me Anymore, etc. Sure we had to put up with the occasional clunker (Girl is one of those that just missed the mark for me), but it was a great time to be a fan. His b-sides from 1999 to Batman were pretty damn amazing... but then he stopped, and collecting his extra work hasn't been the same. I do miss the days of cool discoveries like 17 Days. The expanded version of my book PRINCE and The Purple Rain Era Studio Sessions 1983-1984 was released in November 2018. It was a very cool take on a P classic. Hunt it down - it is worth it.
