Is this the earliest, more guitarey version? That's the one I prefer.
I like it, but I can see why it didn't make the albums.

"You" was recorded in July 1979 as part of "The Rebels" project.
It was re-recorded again as "U" in October 1987 This re-recording was updated sometime in 1990 and given to Paula Abdul who released it on her 1991 album "Spellbound".

ALSO, given to Paula Abdul for 1991 album, Spellbound. Yes the same album that had the songs Rush, Rush, The Promise of a New Day and Vibeology. I like the way the original rock riff of the song was easily assimilated into the final released 'dance' version (Abdul's). Seems rock and dance music have a lot in common than many people realise.

Yep great track.
Also listen to "Hard to get"... there are two versions of that... one from 1979 which is a straight hard rock track... then one from 1981 which has more Dirty Mind instrumentation.
Both sound great. | |

Yeah, Prince is the best at mixing Rock and Disco!
He funky. ..... | |

I'd actually like it if Prince revisited those 1979 rock sounds... just keeping it raw...

Yes i agree!
Just Prince on drums, bass, guitars, keyboards, vox - that's it - no Pro-tools or computer trickery - just prince in the studio layering the raw instruments - keep it simple and there you go Dirtymind part 2 - maybe call it Un-dirtymind (religious views withstanding).

I think that was Gayle Chapman on vocals in the early version though, not Prince.
And I agree, a kick ass song!
