Does anyone relate to P's "I Hate You?"

I have decided that the Gold Experience is my favorite Prince album. Listening to "I Hate You" brings back all the conflicting feelings--sexual and emotional--that I had with a person I was head over heels with in 1995 when the album came out. It may seem over the top for some people, but it described exactly all the conflicting thoughts and feelings I was going through then in a complex relationship... Great lyrics, wonderful music! What P. song considered "over the top" makes complete sense to you in the context of your life? And when you hear it years after brings back all that emotional complexity and hubris?! For better or worse?! cool

I can! And I just posted a question about that song the same time as you...thanks for bringing the relativity of that song up. It is such a substantial song in his archives for me...and apparently, you also!

I would imagine anyone who's lived a minute and had a strong friendship, or a relationship, go bad can relate to that general idea of love/hate; the constant conflict.

The song itself never brought up any particular feelings for me. I was only in my 20's when it came out, and hadn't really been in a relationship to that point (I was a roaming bachelor and loved it). Even now, having been through a couple of relationships, it doesn't ring for me.

Just in case you weren't aware: The song is reportedly written about Carmen Electra, after Prince found out she allegedly slept with Tony M!!!! Gheez, of all people to shag, she's gotta go DOWN the ladder to find someone? Only one person braggin' about that liaison, and it ain't the girl. lol

The Gold Experience is Prince's last truly great album...for me. He's had good ones since, but nothing that great has graced us yet.

What I remember, is when the album came out. I had no idea when it came out. I saw it and bought it immediately. It is my favorite overall Prince CD. It showed alot of songwriting skill, raw guitar playing, good lyrics and to me, was way better than anything you were hearing on the radio. THen I saw VH1 honors with Prince performing Pussy Control and Endorphine Machine - wow!!!! Personally, I think it was the most electric band he had had and they were at their peak (Diamonds and Pearls then the Symbol album and then Gold). The production values were perhaps the best he's done. I wish I had seen him tour during the Gold Experience. I saw him after Emancipation dropped for the first time, great show, but it was a different band, and I don't think they were as good. I Hate you did get some airplay, but quickly disappeared. Could he have released Pussy Control, mmm, probably not. Endorphine Machine, rock radio wouldn't touch him. Gold might have gotten a shot, but again, just didn't fit any of the radio formats. Radio was wierd then, and worse now.

This was an underground album to me. If you heard it or knew about it, it was awesome. It was a symbol of everything that is great about music and horrible about the music biz and radio.

The song "I Hate U" is for only one person who shall remain nameless. Honestly, I don't hater her (anymore) but for a good while I did. When I first heard that song I was really "feeling" Prince then, not that I'm not feeling him (his lyrics) now.

Great album I give it 5 out of 5 stars ... I was coming into my own as a Prince fan back then. cool
Peace ... & Stay Funky ...
