Question for the 3121 haters...

WHAT THE HELL IS WRONG WITH YOU??? neutral confused

lol

I mean, it's been 4 years since the release of Prince's BEST & MOST POPULAR album of the 00s decade, and there are still MANY people that dislike or loathe this album as one of the man's worst. neutral mad

WTF??? mad mad

I mean, to each his own, but there are some instant neo-classics on that record: TITLE-TRACK (how can anyone dislike this groovy song? neutral question) , Black Sweat, Fury, The Word, Satisfied, Lolita, Love, The Dance...)

I just don't get it...the album was strong (much better than Musicology anyway), the production was hip, the song order was perfect, and it had plenty of different styles (pop singles, electro, funk, soul, rock, salsa, etc.)...
Ok, there are a couple of slighty disposable (yet enjoyable) tracks (TAC, BL&B, I&C), but the rest of the album is top-notch...On top of that, it's the best summer record that the man has done in his entire career, I mean, 3121and a hot beach party? Ok, THIS I LIKE cool lol cool

3121 was the best mainstream album that Prince could do at that point of his career...WE NEED mainstream albums from time to time...we also need stuff like TRC and LotusFlower, but without albums like 3121 the man's career would be just bored

To the 3121 haters: I don't trust you... confused lol lol

Discuss... cool

Except for the title track, the rest is utter crap, imho.

I can still remember how I cringed when Lolita started to play on my first listen. I never thought Prince could do something that horrible.

I couldn't understand how Prince put out such a lame record, but well, soon after he did it much worse: Planet Earth.

I will never forgive him for his 2004-onwards period.

Very org-y to call brainless to those who don't think like you.

How can I explain that I don't like an album (even if my fave artist did it)?
So that's it. I don't like it.

I like 3121.
I was not a big fan of it when it came out, but now i like it just fine.
Same thing with Planet Earth and Lotus Flow3r.
In fact i probably like Planet Earth a little more than 3121, but it is close.

Hey Joe

I know you love this album, but to me the problem is there are simply no stand out original songs to center my focus when listening to it. The title track is fun, (especially live), but it's one of those one chord grooves. Not exactly the height of creativity.

And Black Sweat is an interesting song in its' production and vibe.

But for me, that's about as much praise as I can offer. The rest of this album, like Planet Earth is just cluttered with tracks that have been done many many times over.

Understanding that almost all "pop" music is derivative in some way, shape or form, this album doesn't offer me any slants that grab me and make me want to hear more.

Vitriol, as to your quote about all of 2004 to 09 being bad, I don't agree. I think there are a few very strong moments on Musicology and Lotus. I would agree that they are not killer albums, but they both have some stand out tracks.

Long, long ago i used to love every track on a prince album. Now there are still some really good ones on each albums, but also a lot that just doesn't do anything to me. Same goes for this album: i love Lolita (which gets trashed on the org a lot, but i love everything about it...typical pop Prince track) and 3121 (killer track).
Live "Fury" is hot, not so much on the album.

That's about it.

It's a great album - just a couple duds (Get on the Boat, Beautiful Loved & Blessed)

"Fury" was spoiled by the ferocious Saturday Night Live performance - the album version could never hold up, but it's still a cool track.

"Get On the Boat" is one of only two Prince songs I've never listened to all the way through (the other being "I Like Funky Music")

I surely don't hate the 3121 album... then again i don't HATE any album. I think it's a wrong choice in words to describe music.

To say it's a classic is really too much. There are some good tracks on this album like : Fury - Black Sweat
I like "Te Amo Corazon" something different for Prince and a beautiful song.

But songs like "Love" "Incense and candles" "The word" are just mediocre for me. They don't stick with me.

I like "Lotus Flow3r" much more.

Lotusflow3r was a masterpiece compared to this garbage.

Agreed, should have skipped 3121 and planet earth albums and put the track "3121" on Lotusflow3r along with F.U.N.K or on MPLSound.
I remember hearing 3121 thinking this album is going to be awesome and then being very unimpressed with the sound and material on the rest of the record sad

Next one will be great though, boy got his mojo back. I'm hoping for a new "prince and the new power genration" album.... a follow up to Symbol album with Sonny T, Michael B and Mr Hayes at the helm..... I can dream!

I can see that some people think that but I cannot feel it.

Remember when you heard a new track in the past and your first thought was 'Wow, ONLY PRINCE could've done that'?

I haven't experienced that for a long time.

His recent output is very predictable, unsurprising. I understand he gained a lot of new fans since Musicology and he wants to fidelize them by releasing albums which are easy to listen to instead of 'scaring' them with a more challenging music which demands more from the listener.

I think this is a wrong tactic. Young people mainly understand music as a 'product' for 'consumers'. Something you can 'use' and then 'dump'. They will never be devoted followers of an artist in a great majority of cases.

The problem is he can be losing a part of his long-term die-hards with every new release.
