Dear Mr. Man Appreciation

Pulled out the musicology cd and went through the songs i skipped over and didnt originally put on my ipod. On the Couch and Dear Mr. Man were the ones i skipped. On the couch sounds alot like Satisfied...but lawd Dear Mr. Man is funky..who agrees/disagrees...and who is the man?

I love this song too, Mr. Man is supposed to be Mr. President of the USA, thus during the reign of error of George W. the II.

Ya don't say?!

Actually it's more of an ode to the establishment in general. A lot of the things he talks about are more wide spread and not always directly political from the oval office.

Yes, they do not vote, nor do they say the pledge of allegiance to the flag. They don't celebrate any holidays, or birthdays, and probably not even a wedding anniversary. They're very anti-government. It's all very segregationist, and separatist. Cult-like.

so.. prince talks about freedom and emancipation yet hes is jevovah witness hmmm

He's been a Jehovah's Witness since about 2001. Only Prince knows if he's voted or not, but people will always speculate. Not sure about all that anarchy stuff.

Prince talked about freedom et al before the JW conversion. For me, he's the exact person he always balked against pre-2000. He became what he resented, and now he's resented for it. If anyone is Mr. Man, it's him.

One of Prince's dumbest songs. EVAR.

"... maybe we should write a letter..."?

Get tha fuck outta here with that bullshit. Prince + social commentary = weaksauce (post SOTT)

This song just kind of comes and goes without a reaction from me...to be fair though, that's the case with most of the "Musicology" album

The song is probably my least listened to from Musicology, i am kinda indifferent to it.
However, on the Cinnamon Girl cd single (non npgmc version) there is a nice video included of a live performance of Dear Mr Man...recorded at the Webster Hall in NYC, check it out. wink

I just ignore his religious beliefs and concentrate on the music as much as i can, unless religion is directly referenced in his music, prime example being The Rainbow Children, which makes it kind of hard to ignore. lol

it's a great track there were some remixes done too, but unreleased. there was an idea of a musicology remix album, possibly online release, a bit like the rave in2 and un2

this was a track that i was given bits of lyrics to when playing a guess the lyrics competition on npgmc and fooled a mod with a line from the war that was similar to gold, so they posted lyrics to this track which they had been rehearsing earlier that day

The lyrics (for better or for worse), are the crux of this song. I WILL go on record and say this is one Prince's better grooves post-"comeback".

my favourite version is the long extended intro version from one of the aftershows i was at during the paisley aftershows in 2004. apparently there is an extended studio mix with a similar arrangement

What's wrong with the world 2day?
Things just got 2 get better
Show me what the leaders say
Maybe we should write a letter

Said Dear Mr. Man, we don't understand
Why poor people keep struggling but U don't lend a helping hand
Matthew 5:5 say "The meek shall inherit the earth"
We wanna b down that way
but U been trippin since the day of your birth

Who said that 2 kill is a sin
Then started every single war that Ur people been in?
Who said that water is a precious commodity
Then dropped a big old black oil slick in the deep blue sea?

Who told me, Mr. Man, that working round the clock
would buy me a big housed in the hood
Cigarette ads on every block
Who told me, Mr. Man, that Eye got a right 2 moan?
How about this bog old hole in the ozone?

What's wrong with the world 2day
Things just got 2 get better
Dear Mr. Man, we don't understand
Maybe we should write a letter

Listen, Ain't no sense in voting - same song with a different name
Might not b in the back of the bus but it sure feel just the same
Ain't nothing fair about welfare
Ain't no assistance in AIDS
We ain't that affirmative about your actions until the people get paid

Ur thousand years r up
Now U got 2 share the land
Section 1 - the 14th amendment says "No state shall deprive any person of life,
liberty, or property, without due process of law"
Mr. Man, we want 2 end this letter with 3 words
We tired a-y'all

I love this funky groove, very insightful.
Lawmakers and Politicians who make decisions affect all of us.
And in some pretty SAD ways.

Me too. It's a good song lyrically and musically. A rare pearl-in-the-pig-shit pig that's been too much of his post LoveSexy output.
